After some trials, I have found a mod soup that works reasonably for me and for my rather low end laptop. It is a selection of the Berbster's no. 2 list (post #35 of his invaluable howto thread). It is stable and has an acceptable framerate even in Kiel harbour -- and I get a decent graphic on a 256 Mb video card. So here it is (the TDW patches have been applied to the unmodded 1.2 clean install):

I still have some things to sort out, so here are the questions:

I applied TDW patch for flags following wind direction, but apparently that does not work: any known incompatibility with my mod soup?
Mods 1 to 4 are required by TDW patches, but get overwritten by subsequent mods in the list: is this ok?
#38 doesn't seem to be working: I don't get a square number when I request a mission, but the usual "sunk ship" icon and assignment.
Are #42 and #47 mutually exclusive?
I can't get the Captain's Journal to work (and trying to activate it once resulted in a corrupt savegame): can you point me to a "for dummies" tutorial on how to activate and how to use it?
I have inconsistencies in mission assignment and objectives: for instance, I completed the primary objective of the first mission (intercepting the Polish TF off Danzig: the obj was clearly marked as complete in the captain's log), but at the end of the patrol it was NOT considered completed; I have been reassigned to a Baltic mission on Sep. 17, 1939 (it was the only clickable on the map), when the time limit for it was Sep. 5, etc. Can this be solved? Will it have any consequences on my career?
I would like to add more variety of ships to the game, but can't afford the load of MTNS on my system: is there any "lighter" way to add ships to the roster and have them show up in game?
My recognition manual does NOT show all the ships thata are in game; what did I do wrong?
Is there a way to eliminate the friendly/enemy color code on contacts on the map, and maybe also the direction "tail"? I remember that was possible in SHIII/GWX and I wonder if there's a similar solution in SH5.

This mod below requires the mod in folder 3 to also be enabled in your position 26.

Mod 38 does not work in the Baltic.

It should appear in your next mission in the Captains Log when you start your game in Kiel

Mod 42 is to do with light rays and shadows

Mod 47 I believe makes things harder to see at night

Do you mean the Captains Log (Hat Icon) > Shortcut Key K

Or do you mean the Journal notes > Shortcut Key Q

The primary objective is to locate the Polish task force (2 warships) you do not have to sink them.

The secondary objective is to attack shipping leaving and entering Danzig Bay.

You need 2 kills to complete and fill the tonnage bar.

You should then receive a message moving you from Memel to Kiel although you will not see the icon move until you are well on your way to Kiel.

No, the Baltic is one of the add-on missions from OHII.

You do not actually need the rec manual.

If you choose your crew to identify the target the mast height is automatically sent to the TDC.

In TDW’s Options File Editor Viewer you can also make a change and have the target showing in the periscope.

You could go in the game options and not show map contacts.

My apologies for not being able to answer all your questions as I do not have the answers.
