So much as I love the game I do have slight problem. Having come over from SH4 i'm used to having the hydrophones work on the surface and not needing to dive to have them pick up ships. Does anyone know what i'd need to do to make it so all the hydrophone models work on the surface?

So no one knows what i'd need to do?

To be honest I think your the first person to ever even discuse this.

Really? After all these years you'd think at least one other person would've asked or talked about doing something like this.

No, it's been discussed before. It's probably hardcoded and can't be changed, but there are reasons for that. The thinking for SH4 was that US subs had a retractable sonar installation under the keel. U-boats did not. A u-boat's hydrophone array was in the bow of the boat, and when it was surfaced the array was right where the most turbulance was created. The rotating sensor was up on the deck, so when the boat was surfaced it was up out of the water, and useless.

My objection to having even US boats be able to hear on the surface is that their sonar array was very much like that of destroyers. If a sub can hear a destroyer or a merchant while surfaced, why can't a destroyer hear a surfaced sub? I could easily be wrong, but Outside of SH4 I've never heard of a sub being able to use sonar to hear surface ships while surfaced themselves.

Update: It seems that the underwater array was active SONAR only. The passive array, or hydrophone, was up on the deck exactly as in the u-boats. They could not listen while surfaced.

It might be but Ive noticed that while playing that depth can affect the range something is herd. If its moddable its probebly hell hiden.

Well that sucks. Guess I gotta start remembering to dive occasionally. Maybe i'll mod the radar instead. Anyone know how to do that?

No problem. I'm sure someone who knows will be along soon enough.

Mod the radar how? get it sooner or increase its range?

Both. I'll be using it as a substitute for the hydro's so I need to have one available at the start with the range of the hydro's. From what i've read the means i'll need to make it so one of the radar sets has at least 20 miles of range.

Now I belive you can ajust the gain date of the radar by going into the basic CFG files(its towards the bottom), and the range is in the sensors cfg file. let me know it this works.

Really? I'll check that out and get back about that.

Ok so I checked the files and got a bunch of stuff that I have no clue what it means. So yeah until someone who knows exactly what i'd need to change posts i'm stuck.

So anyone know how to edit the Radar files?

Does no one know what files I need to edit for the radar to get what I want?
