Hey, I'm planning on rebuying SH4 on Steam soon (along with the U-boat missions) and for the first time, I'm planning to mod it. I've watched a few gameplay videos of modded games, but on every time the HUD is changed (like on this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx-WuvVoh6w) one). At first I thought it's a HUD mod but now I'm left with the impression that mods (like TMO) themselves change the hud. Is it possible to use a mod but keep the default look of the HUD?

Yes, you can keep the stock look. Needs just bit edit for files. (or just delete some mod folders from TMO )

Welcome aboard mate!
Just download some HUD from SUBSIM forums download section.
Example: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=440
See the files included and delete they from TMO.
BTW, if you are totally newbie in SH4, try GFO (Game Fixes Only Mod by Webster). TMO is the hard way to learn the gameplay - Very hard gameplay!
Best regards.

Welcome aboard : )
Is it possible for you to buy the SH4 Gold DVD rather than Steam?
I just bought a SH4 Gold DVD for myself - mostly thinking ahead for the next computer. Initially I bought the D2D digital download and never had a problem, tech support was great when I installed on this newer computer, however D2D has dropped support for SH4 in the future - last I read.
I've tried to help people with modding issues in various posts and it seems that those who used a Steam download had problems. It appears that Steam tries to 'fix' modded installs, and as it 'repairs' the install, it nullifies the mod.
From reading about Steam issues here, it looks like Steam downloads portions of SH4 as they are needed. I'm not sure how Steam works with mods, I do know about the DVD, it may be more expensive, but I think there are fewer issues.
Maybe Steam users have a post regarding how to avoid problems with a Steam install. That would be nice. I know some swear by Steam - I'd like to find out why & how..
Happy Hunting!
PS: I agree with fitzcarraldo, try GFO (Game Fixes Only Mod by Webster)..... outstanding 'starter mod'

I'm with aanker......I've read you'll get trouble if buying from Steam. I've heard the basic download is version 1.3 for $9.99. A terrible version that prompted version 1.4 to be soon produced just to correct some things version 1.3 had added. To bring the game up to v1.5 you'll need to buy the additional U-Boat Missions Add-on for another $9.99. All in all, both games for over $20.00 dollars, and what do you have?! A commitment allowing you to download the files. Nothing held in-hand, just the right to use their files as they see fit.
My opinion is if you plan to mod your game you'll need a copy of the DVD to reinstall. AND yes, you'll be needing to reinstall every once in a while if you mod your game. Files become corrupt when over writing them....even with a tool like JSGME (JSGME didn't put the "Compare Snapshot" feature, to compare original game files, into its app if the makers thought modding was foolproof!!).
So, look for the latest version of the game on a DVD and thumb your nose at a download. The price has gone up in the last year, a little over a year ago I bought the DVD version of the Gold Edition from iNetVideo (http://www.inetvideo.com/products/silent-hunter-iv-wolves-of-the-pacific-gold-edition-pc) for $7.99. It arrived in the mail within 5 days time. Today, I see the site has restocked the game, yet selling it for $24.99 now. Higher in price, yet still well worth the purchase when compared to a Steam download.

Thanks for the info! I'm not new to SH4, I used to play it a lot back in 2007/2008, and SH3 before that, but if memory serves me right, I sold the DVD since I wasn't able to play for quite some time. I'm looking to get back into it, and I'm eyeing up the Steam version specifically because the game plus the U-boat missions can be as low as $12! I've modded games on Steam before, it only overwrites any modded files if you tell it to - there's no worry about that! I'll just need to look into how the modding process works (I see JSGME mentioned a lot). I'm not in the US, and no retailers sell SH4 here anymore, so ordering from abroad online would bump up the price quite a lot when paying for the delivery as well.
