90 Years Of NFL Player Growth, Animated

90 years of player growth animated for the statiscally minded.
Oh yeah I forgot my annual facepalm over the Faider's chances this season.
Tom Terriffic is starting his 15th season this year. I figure he has at least 5 more seasons in him but hopefully the O-line can protect him this year. Gronk is cleared to play but it looks like they're gonna save him for the regular season figuring that his bad knee will be targeted. Our ramped up defense is expected to shine this year with a leaner Vince Wilfork back from his torn achillies tendon injury. Julian Edleman is looking awesome.
It could be a very good year for us... :D

My Panthers offense has to kick things into gear before the 4th drive... Defense is going to be scary good.
If Beason stays healthy - he is going to rack up yards and points.
Somebody make the coaches keep Fozzy!
Peyton is going to look amazing again this year. Eli - yea not so much! Tom Brady will do what he normally does - make guys off the street look amazing!
Johnny Football is going to implode if he starts. Too immature to handle it. Andrew Luck is going to struggle.
Steve Smith may just get his Super Bowl Ring this year - good for him - even if it is with the Ravens.
Wait what? The Raiders won? By a point, of yeah against the Lions.

But this is the real shocker Roger Goodell: http://kdvr.com/2014/09/13/nfl-commissioner-goodell-paid-far-more-than-any-player/
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell earned more than $100 million over the course of five years — more than any of the league’s star players.
Goodell, who is facing pressure to resign in the face of the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal, earned a whopping $44.2 million for the 2012 season, the most recent to be reported by the NFL. That was up 50% from 2011.
The only player who came close to earning that kind of money was Drew Brees, who pulled down $40 million in salary and signing bonus that same year,

New England is sitting pretty at 9-2
but they could wind up 10-6 real easy tied with Miami or Buffalo for AFC east
How?
Lose the next two games on the road
@ Green Bay 8-3
@ San Diego 7-4
Lose to Miami like they did the first time
Dec 14 Miami @ New England
Probably beat the NY Jets, but you never know the Jets beat Pittsburg
Dec 21 @ New York Jets (fighting for jobs 2-9)
Last game with Buffalo might be a division takes all game
Dec 28 Buffalo @ New England
Well I doubt that will happen but being an old New England Yankee I also never underestimate the capacity of NE teams to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Neither the Green Bay and San Diego games will be easy.
Miami however is just not going to beat them in their own house, ditto for Buffalo and the Jets, well...
So the safe bet is a 12-4 season although the way they've been playing I wouldn't be surprised if they sweep all the way to the big dance.

Two weeks left in football and nobody posting for two weeks :o
Were talking playoffs soon and very soon ...
How about that NFC South Wow! New Orleans or Atlanta or even North Carolina all bunched up with loosing records no less.
This is why we shouldn't believe all those high salary stories:
Colin Kaepernick is not going to get all of his $126 million contract:http://finance.yahoo.com/news/colin-kaepernicks-record-126-million-162136580.html
Kaepernick was supposed to get his first large salary ($12.4 million) in the 2015 season. But because of the way the contract was worded, that salary is actually going to go down to $10.4 million.
Starting next season, Kaepernick's salary goes down $2 million each year if he is not named first- or second-team All-Pro, or if the 49ers don't play in the Super Bowl the previous season with 80% of the snaps taken by Kaepernick, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/05/the-full-kaepernick-contract-details/).
The 49ers have been eliminated from playoff contention, and Kaepernick ranks 22nd in quarterback rating, which means the de-escalator is going to kick in.
In addition, while many outlets were reporting that Kaepernick's deal included a record $61 million in "guaranteed" money, it turns out the money was guaranteed only for injury.
Each year of the contract, the 49ers can decide to cut Kaepernick before April 1 and will not owe him any more money

Yeah, what's up with the Lions? That's two weeks in a row that a Lion has stomped on somebody! They should suspend the two of them for the play-offs, or the coaches of putting up with this BS.
I understand Suh has been suspended for the next game which will probably be the rest of the season for the Lions.
CaptainHaplo
12-31-14, 11:11 PM
His suspension was reversed.
Before anyone starts yelling about it - take the time to watch the WIDE ANGLE shot. TV basically focused purely on his legs - but if you watch the wide angle shot you can see that Suh was off balance, continued to be when his first step partially stepped on Rogers, causing him to take another step back to retain his balance. He didn't even look down to see who it was (it could have been a teammate) until he stepped forward.
Also - there was no grinding of the foot, no sideways motion or anything that would indicate he wanted and intended to cause harm.
Yes - he has a bad reputation - but if you look at the whole picture and not just the zoomed in portion, it is a different picture entirely. Yes - he could have stopped and said "sorry" or whatever, or helped Rogers up to show remorse, but bad sportsmanship isn't a reason to suspend a player.
And I don't even like the guy. Personally - I would have preferred to see him ejected from the league years ago after the goal line stomp.
One last note - while I disagree with it - the rules the NFL has to operate under (per their union agreement) meant that Suh was regarded as a "first time offender" and as such - the fine was the proper punishment.
If you want to know why my Patriots do so well every year this guy is one of the major reasons

Tom Terrific has always been about more than just the money. Many teams have one or two big name guys that will restructure to help out the team. Steve Smith was one of Carolina's guys that did that nearly every year. Our two headed monster at RB did it twice I think.
Still, its always good to see when a player shows that they are willing to do something for the team. Not always does it also help them - but Tom has always been a pretty high character guy compared to many.
Now as long as the Patriots lose before my Panthers have to play them in the NFC finals.......

I am not being a homer when I say Panthers should beat the Cards. Arizona is set to play Lindley for goodness sake. I don't see their O-line keeping him upright and unpressured. Carolina finally seems to have "gotten it together" over the last 4 weeks. Panthers advance this week.
No one really can "trust" Andy Dalton in the playoffs - but Indy's offense has had the wheels fall off here lately. Add in that the Cincy defense has played well overall lately, I expect the Bengals come out ahead of the Colts on this one.
The next one hurts me. I really want Steve Smith to get a Super Bowl ring, but I don't think this is the year he succeeds. The Ravens just haven't been stout enough on D or O this year, and I think Ben (ugh) is playing well right now. The Steelers D has weakened as well, but I don't think the Ravens can keep up on the scoreboard. Ravens fall to the Steelers in a game that might not even be close.
Romo vs Suh.... Well, not really. The Lions have been a top defense all year, but they didn't show it last week. The Cowboys have been playing consistent and well the last few weeks. I don't have faith in Stafford, and Romo has staked the demons of December in the purifying light of sunshine and wins late in the season. Cowboys are going to win this one, though it may be too close for comfort for many of their fans.

Small thread hijack.
Anybody wanna buy an Oregon Duck national chump shirt? Anybody? Nike pre-printed a lot of them. Any takers? Anyone?
Old school defense and offense asswhups gimmicky offense again. This is what happens when you play a season full of cupcakes, then face a real defense.
Even all of the pretty uniform combinations couldn't get a national championship.
This article sums up why I can't stand the ducks and more or less quit watching college football.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/oregon-ducks-capture-best-worst-college-football-175000988.html
At Oregon, the transformation of the football program has, for better or worse, coincided with a physical transformation of the university. Nike founder and former Duck Phil Knight has generously bankrolled state-of-the-art facilities across campus, turning a sleepy college town into a center of gravity in college sports. The Oregon brand is practically a master class in viral marketing, led by Puddles, the zany, Disney-inspired mascot that’s a mainstay on ESPN.
Unsurprisingly, there have been growing pains as the program becomes The Program. There was a whiff of recruiting violations at the tail end of Mike Bellotti’s tenure. Player conduct issues since then have ranged from the obnoxious (players whining about the Rose Bowl) to the outrageous (a star running back punching an opponent after a season-opening loss), besmirching the university’s reputation. (Over the weekend, two Oregon starters were benched for smoking weed.) For years, the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on state-of-the-art athletic facilities have turned faculty members and alumni into fierce opponents of Oregon athletics.
This:
But the Ducks are a big, flashy, talented, media-savvy part of the problem. They're Exhibit A in the case against the super conference era, when big programs generate billions of dollars of revenue at the expense of athletes’ health and education. The Ducks may not be the worst offenders, but if they fulfill their promise and become a truly elite program, they will bear a huge responsibility: Where champions lead, others will follow.

Man, the Packers were already celebrating and hugging at the 6 minute mark. You know, when you watch football, and a team is down two scores with less than 6 minutes to go, you know that a comeback is possible, just very unlikely. Seabirds have to get a TD right away. Then recover the onside. Then a long FG to tie, THEN a TD in OT. And it all happened. That's what keeps you in your seat for many games that fizzle in the end. You never know...and when you see it, you have seen a miracle.

Its not over until its over. And credit to the Seahawks, they had to execute in the end.
Very surprised how soft the Pack played that two-point conversion, when they had nothing to lose by doing so. They still had to go down the field for the FG.
It's like they were playing to tie. That is not the mark of a champion.

You never know...and when you see it, you have seen a miracle.
Penalties killed Green Bay. Two of those field goals could have been touchdowns if some bonehead move like taunting didn't back them up.

Seems the underinflated ball issue in the playoff game sunday is not going to go away any time soon:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/2015/01/21/jarrett-bell-bill-belichick-has-serious-explaining-to-do/22105599/
One might be an accident, and three could be a coincidence.
Yet when the New England Patriots come to a game with 11 of their 12 footballs deemed to be illegal by NFL standards, it looks to be seriously shady.
Preliminary findings of the league's probe into the Patriots, according to a report late Tuesday by ESPN's Chris Mortensen,
revealed 11 footballs were under-inflated by 2 pounds per square inch in the AFC Championship Game.
Perhaps New England should forfeit the game and let the Colts go onto the superbowl?
Big time fine coming this time :yep:

This does not change the outcome of the game, Pats win regardless.
But it does raise some questions, and not just with the Pats. I think they get scrutinized due to Spygate years ago. And you have to sleep in the bed you made.
But what about the on-field officials and NFL itself? Should they not have noticed this as well. Especially if 11 were soft. If that is the case get them blown up, how long would that take.

Actually reading a football webcomic about it and one of the comments made me stop and think about that. Sure we say that but what if the deflated balls prevented a couple of Blount fumbles for example? Or a Pick-six that has the Colts heading into halftime with a tie and then causes Blount to fumble a couple times in the second half making Brady have to throw it more causing another pick or two of him? Say what you will but the fact is it probably did change the outcome of the game to a degree.

you cant say that for certain, if the pats didn't have so much early success because they cheated then the game could have been much closer.
look, its time to get rid of excuse making to justify the cheating didn't matter.
plain and simple if you cheat you are disqualified, period.
they do it everywhere else in life, ask lance Armstrong and others.
the pats cannot be given a pass to cheat simply because they would have still won if they didn't cheat. its like saying murder doesn't count if the autopsy showed they were about to die from a heart attack if they weren't shot first.
the act of cheating is what it is and cheating should have serious consequences so they should have the victory voided and therefor forfeit the game. they also don't deserve to replay the game as some said because again you had your chance to play the game fairly and decided to cheat so lie in the bed you made and accept the cost of your stupidity.
so there are only two fair and correct ways to proceed, if the NFL does truly care about the integrity of the league, skip the superbowl and declare the seahawks as winners by default (never gonna happen) or disqualify the pats and by default the colts win the conference championship and go to the superbowl (again never gonna happen because the pats mean more money is made then if the colts play)
the integrity of the league is at stake here (what little there is of it) and its obvious they don't care about the game if they can get a good matchup that brings in the big bucks. so if that's how they truly feel they should just vote who plays in the superbowl based on how many tickets they can sell because that's how they are treating this.
lets face it, if it was the colts or the bengals who cheated (2 very small tv markets) then they would already have been disqualified and replaced by other teams
there you have it sports fans, an undeserving team who cheated and was still allowed to play in the superbpowl will most likely win the superbowl so the world will see what a joke the NFL is.
if the pats are allowed to play in the superbowl then the NFL has declared it doesn't care about fair play or cheating and rules don't matter if you can sell tickets.
rant over,

Again I disagree. Momentum much as its cliched is real and a couple turnovers by the Pats that lead to some Colts points and we could easily be talking about how the Luck's going to a Super Bowl faster then Manning did.

I'll agree on that one. I don't think they have much at all. Especially after this season. Money rules, but that is nothing new in the society we live in. Sad yes, unfair at times you bet ya, but unfortunately this is our reality.
Pats will be punished I am sure. Cash and maybe draft picks. And their reputation especially when you add in spygate.
Where were the officials regarding this as I mentioned earlier. Surely the noticed this during the game and could have done something about it.
And I am no Pats fan, I am a fan of one of those small market teams you mention, the Packers.
I listened to the Belichick news conference and watched the Brady one and something he said really struck me. Nobody from the NFL has talked to Brady yet It's four days after the event and none of the investigators has thought to even call him for his statement?

well it wasn't a few it was every ball they had (each team is given 12 balls to use as they see fit) except the one used for kicking that they wanted fully inflated for maximum distance in field goals and kickoffs, 11 out of twelve balls, that isn't an oops or a mistake that's 100% intentional cheating.
in truth I think the colts lose either way but you cheat you should be disqualified from winning, I don't care if they win by 60 points, you cheat you forfeit, or at least that's how it is under fair rules.
Where were the officials regarding this as I mentioned earlier. Surely the noticed this during the game and could have done something about it.
they caught it at half time so all the balls were replaced for the second half, at which point the pats score 28 more unanswered points but in truth by that time there was no way the colts could come back so they pretty much resigned themselves to losing at that point. could the balls make a difference? yes im sure it did but I cant say for certain it changed the end result, just as it cant be said for certain it didn't.

Or maybe it was just a sticky psi gauge and an overly cursory pre-game ref inspection. Neither of us will know until the investigation is concluded but it sounds like you've already decided that it's guilty until proven innocent.
And BTW it was 11 out of 24 balls not 12 as has been reported.

Technically it's 11 out of 24 but 12 of those were from the Colts so really it is 11 out of 12.

I was wrong, it's actually 36 for outdoor games though 12 of them are for kicking only.
http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/ball
The home club shall have 36 balls for outdoor games and 24 for indoor games available for testing with a pressure gauge by the referee two hours prior to the starting time of the game to meet with League requirements. Twelve (12) new footballs, sealed in a special box and shipped by the manufacturer, will be opened in the officials’ locker room two hours prior to the starting time of the game. These balls are to be specially marked with the letter "k" and used exclusively for the kicking game.

I still think this is manufactured drama for superbowl ratings. I think if this was mid season, no one blinks an eye about it. I mean, look at how the media is covering it. ESPN is comparing it to Watergate.:hmmm:...:har:
I also liked this angle on it. The NFL can talk about Ray Rice or Peterson....or we can talk about 2 lbs of air being let out of the balls. Spouse abuse vs slightly deflated balls.
My question is, where was Pete Carroll during all of this? I think it's a Seahawk plot to win back to back and how better to do that than get Brady suspended for the superbowl!

You know, that's what makes the game great--throughout 59 minutes it's all about the Lynchs, the Bradys, the Shermans and Wilsons...but when the ultimate moment comes, it's an undrafted rookie who rises to save the day. A true team sport.

This is what Bill has to say about it...
"There has been a lot of criticism that I don't think is anywhere close to being deserved or founded," Belichick said Tuesday during his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI in Boston. "That football team is very good, very well-coached, and Pete does a great job. "Malcolm and Brandon [Browner], on that particular play, just made a great play. I think the criticism they've gotten for the game is totally out of line and by a lot of people who I don't think are anywhere near even qualified to be commenting on it."
Belichick also shared empathy for the Seahawks' heartbreak.
"I wouldn't be able to say enough about Seattle. They're a great football team, well-coached. They deserve so much credit for what they've done, and how well they've done it," he said on the program.
"I know they are disappointed, as we've been in that spot a couple times ourselves. So the high that we feel is probably not as high as the low that they feel. But that's a really good football team."

I don't know. Every day it seems like there is less and less substance to the story. For instance now I understand that the only ball that was 2lbs down was the one the Colts intercepted (interesting in itself). The other 10 ranged from about a pound down to just under the line and that the Refs never gauged them before the game like they were supposed to.
If true I think the Pats won't be so willing to take the blame like they did in Spygate.
My saying in this thread
May it be your favorite NFL-team who are in the next year Super Bowl.
