I have played SH3 and SH4 for years but have not spent one second in SH5 as of yet. I am thinking about giving it a try. From what I see, there is not really Mega mods for SH5 like there were for SH3 (NYGM, GWX, ect.). Instead, there are "Mega Mods" for SH5 that are really just lists of individual mods that are known to work with each other with no CTDs (Sobers Mega Mod List, The Wolves of Steel Mod List, etc.). Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

My main question is if there is a so called "Mega Mod" list for SH5 that will give me the same level of realism or game play that is similar to what GWX gave me in SH3? I am looking for challenging game play that offers convoy attacks where escorts are a real threat, depth charge attacks that are truly damaging, night time attacks (at least in the early years) where I can actually attack on the surface, and game play that is not just about sinking a bunch of ships. Can I get the same level of realism in SH5 that I can get from a Mega Mod in SH3? If I can't, how close to this level of realism can I get in SH5 at the moment? Or, if I really want realism, am I just better off sticking with SH3?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Maybe I should ask my question a little bit differently. I am looking to get as much realism out of SH5 as possible. I would like to get as close to an SH3-GWX or SH3-NYGM realism experience as possible using SH5. From what I see, there are several different "Mod Lists" out there for SH5 (Sobers list, The Wolves of Steel, etc.) that serve as what would be called "Mega Mods" in SH3 (GWX, NYGM, etc.). To get the most out of SH5 while also making it as realistic as possible, which mod list would you suggest:

Sobers List
The Wolves of Steel
Some other list I am not mentioning
Or, am I looking at this process incorrectly and is this a stupid question

I don't mind downloading a bunch of mods and installing them. I have experience with that and this should not be an issue. For example, if "The Wolves of Steel" is designed to make downloading mods simpler and easier to install but not offer as much realism or content as "Sobers List" offers, then I would rather go with "Sobers List".

As nobody rushes to answer, ill try to do it, based on my past experience with SH5.

Short answer:
There's not so many of them, try each for a few days and see which suits you best, because realism is in the eye of the beholder, as they say.

Long answer:
Before speaking of different mod lists, you should know that each and every of them are built using pretty much the same basic "bricks", just arranged somewhat differently, to the taste of the person who "incorporated" them: Open Horizons 2 (latest version), IRAI (latest version), TDW's hardcoded patches, FX update, radio comms, damage, sub crew and interior. So the main aspects of the game are common to all modsoups.

The areas where they differ are mainly the UI, weather&environment and the personal tweaks made by the person who put the supermods together.

But the main gameplay will be basically the same, as IRAI is still IRAI and OHII remains OHII. The planes will still be overdone and unrealistically dangerous early in the war, the convoys, when attacked, will still behave unrealistically, with ships stopping dead in the water or scattering in all directions, turning into a mess of ships that crash into each other, the sub will still be affected by the dreaded "sub on rails" bug present since SH4 etc...

IMO you will not find the realism experience present in GWX. Thats just my personal opinion and I would rejoice being contradicted in my criticism by anyone who will prove me its unfounded.

Thanks for posting a reply. It was very helpful because when you told me about how convoys behave I made the decision to spend my time taking SH3 for another spin. I haven't played NYGM yet (always played GWX) so I will just try that for now.

Good luck to all the modders who continue to work on SH5. I really do hope someday these issues can be fixed. Or, better yet, a highly talented group of modders organize themselves into a group that is capable of bringing an actual commercial product to the market that replaces the Silent Hunter series now that it is dead.
