Just running TMO right now, no RSRD yet, I need to get my bearing's again in the game, just started my second patrol, first was a disaster, tried to get in front of a Task Force but got spoted by DD's and took 45% damage to the hull along with gun knocked out, so I ran away and managed to get to base.

Second just started so nothing to report as of yet.

started with S-18 out of Manila

I started RFB three weeks ago and I am testing out some issues with ISP while using this list.

I tell you what ... one of my last missions was a night surface attack against two carriers, two heavy cruisers and 4 destroyers. I passed within 900 yards across the bow without the escort seeing me and fired a salvo of fish at 500 yards at the lead carrier. that is when they lit me up and I dove to periscope depth. I caught them coming up the Bungo. I do not know where pete was ... maybe he was the one that got away. Tally was two carriers, two heavy cruisers, and thanks to being ran over by the cruisers three destroyers out of the way.

I recently restarted playing with a Fleet boat again. I've been pretty single mindedly playing OM for the past year. I use TMO, RSRD and OTC, plus a few minor tweaks like chart symbols. When I'm playing the Kriegsmarine I use OM and OMEGU plus the Das Boot sound mod. From time to time I play around in the Med with WDAD, but it really needs a Brit voice sound mod. Shame that project went west :(

I've just started playing with the No Sub On Map mod and I'm trying the celestial navigation option using Stellarium. If nothing else it gives you a extra incentive to sink shipping for the position fix :)

...I caught them coming up the Bungo. I do not know where pete was ... maybe he was the one that got away.

I think Bungo Pete is a TMO thing. IIRC, the TMO AI is tough enough that the "elite" crew rating could be reserved for just one ship, a certain Akikaze DD which is always present, somewhere, in the Bungo Suido.

Although I've always previously prefered R.F.B, I'm playing TMO right now because I really like what Travelers Mod adds. OTC and RFRB are also must-have mods for me.

As for SH5 (love it, BTW), the graphics are better, but they're not out-of-this-world better, and I think TMO's environment is the best of any I have seen.

Here's my Mod Soup:

TM0_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
1.5_Optical Targeting Correction 031312 for RSRDCv502

1.4b Assisted Plotting Mod (reduces map contact info)
Hydrophone Line Extended (from an RFB mod to restore sonar lines - makes accurate plotting of range impossible)
Sobers_better_rocks_and_sand
Sobers_better_bridge_compas
Merchant Skinpack v2 TMO
LST_TMO_v2
TMO Smoke Mod
TMO_Disarmed_Merchants (personal mod - removes TMO's deck guns from early war merchies)
Extended_Agents_intel_Reports-TMO_RSRD-Travellers
Convoy Routes TMO+RSRD
Remove grain effect
Zoomable_External_Cam
stock_water_transparency_for_TMO (personal mod - restores less transparent water)
Non_Historic_Torpedos (personal mod - reduces chance of duds)
3000 Meter Bearing Tool (1280x)

As a kid, I used to sit and watch The Silent Service with my dad. Have read all the first-person accounts. Loved Silent Hunter (That's SH One. Ace. Uno. The Original.) and longed for the day when someone would release a 21st century version.

I was thrilled when I got SH4. Then I tried to play it, threw it in a drawer, and didn't come back until I stumbled onto SubSIm and learned about all the great modding work that had been done. Tried again, and enjoyed SH4 with RFB and RSRDC. (Tried TMO, too. That's another story....)

I found modded SH4 to be good, but not the immersive, I'm-back-in-'42 experience I remembered from old original SH. Overcame my anti-Nazi sentiment enough to try SH5. It's just freakin' beautiful, but even modded to the eyeballs (100+) I found it too constrained.

Out of boredom and dissatisfaction, I tried that old SH3. State-of-the-art-a-decade-ago graphics, but with modding by folks who care deeply about Getting It Right. And now, that sense of immersion, of playing a game where the atmosphere feels right down to the little details, is back for me. It's all subjective, and I couldn't explain it, but SH3 (with NYGM) just has it for me.

I still wish SH4 could give me that feeling. I'd rather be in a Gato. But no one seems to be working on advancing SH4, and SH3 just keeps getting better and better. YMMV, but for now, it's Kaleun Fischer prowling the lonely wastes of the Atlantic and trying to survive the war.

RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
1.5_Optical Targeting Correction 031312 for RSRDCv502
Traveller Mod v2.6 TMO
Traveller Mod 2.6 OTC 1.5 Patch
Traveller Mod 2.6 Larger Search Patterns
1.5_OTC for 16 to 9 Aspect Ratio RSRDCv502 (I deleted everything but cameras.dat from this one to keep as much of Trav's mod as possible)

Right now I'm north of Palau, evading the destroyer that sped up and dodged the two fish I sent his way earlier. I think I'm on my fourth patrol; I started April '42 (wanted a Gato) and have already made the Midway transfer. Despite copious use of time compression I think I have more time elapsed out of game than in game though.

It's always been a bit of a niggle the way you always know your position and your chart is updated in real time. Plus navigation is something of a thing of mine. I once did some night school classes on inshore navigation and I thought then I'd love to learn how to use the stars. When I learned about this set up, adopting it was a no-brainer, but the difference it makes to gameplay is huge. For starters I find myself changing course a lot less often. I know there are huge differences of opinion on this, and to be honest I think that however you play the game is cool - It's a game after all, and anyone who calls themselves a serious gamer has rather missed the point I think :) But for me there's a lot of free enjoyment in doing stuff manually. Plus it's highly educational. They could never teach me trig in school, but if I'd had this when I was fifteen I'd have had a Cambridge scholarship by my seventeenth birthday :) I never knew trig could be so much fun, or that I'd ever use a sliderule again.

This game, and the people who mod it, totally rock:rock:

I'm still playing SH4 every day, and still looking for the best combination of mods :hmmm:. My current installation is:

SH4 1.5
TMO 2.5
TMO 2.5 small patch
RSRDC_TMO_V502
RSRDC_V5xx_Patch1
LST_TMO_v2
TMO Smoke Mod
DC Water Disturbance v2
Convoy Routes TMO+RSRDC
Fixed Zero Bomb Load RSRDC
Fixed_CD_sonar_RSRDC
IJN_Radar_Fix_for_ TMO2
TMO_Visuals_for_RSRDC
Real captain problems mod
Webster's Ship Manuvering Fix

I'm testing it, seems stable to me, but I don't know if the last two mods overwrites some important features in the main mods. I'm looking for realism, but Traveller's mod adds too many things I don't like, that's why I have installed these last two mods.

If someone has any advice about the mod list or incompatibilities with them, I'll really appreciate it.

Best regards and sorry for my poor written english

I play whenever I get a chance, after work, items that need taking care of around home and a little of the honey-do-list. This career that I was on lasted until Feb of 1945 with a total of twenty patrols. This just happens to be the longest career I've had up to date. I came across a convey of nine merchants with five escorts in a star formation. I normally don't like going up against INJ escorts in such shallow water. Two hundred feet just isn't enough ocean to hide in and the weather conditions didn't help any either. Calm seas doesn't help hide you. But the targets were too juicy not to attack, three of the nine were tankers and my choice was a Nippon Maru. I might not have a shot at another one before the end of the war. So I drove before INJ escorts made radar contact to a depth almost scrubbing the hull on the bottom with my nose pointed at the closest escort at barely one knot and silent running. I was trying give the escort the narrowest profile and smallest amount noise possible. I noticed that the lead escort not in the front of the convey anymore. I went in at a 45 degree angle of the convey route for my attack run. When I thought that I was with range of my Mark 18s torpedoes, I came up to periscope depth, measured the target's speed, made final adjustments to my manual plot. I sent three fish on course for a little meet and greet! Drove back for the bottom and the crew came off battle stations. On the way down, there was three explosives and the target went to the bottom. The escorts didn't know which directions the torpedoes came from. Maybe luck was on my side. I started my escape and evasion from the area. One escort pass me less than 900 yards as I stopped the engines without turning towards me. Maybe, I thought, we can get out of here without being noticed. Just the rear escort now to get by, but my profile towards him wasn't the greatest, 30 degrees at one knot takes to long to turn. Him and his friends found me and worked the sub over until the damage was too great. I know that I could go back to an earlier save and do things different. But I think I'll let this career end as is. Thanks to all the skippers that help someone like me to be able to go this long and to the skippers that make the mods that keep this game interesting and also this forum. Without it, where could folks like me come to read and ask questions, how to enjoy the game. I know this is a long post and I appreciate the time that it was given to read. :subsim:

I have finally acheived a stable install of v1.4 of the game but im currently commanding u123 on sh3. I plan to start a serious career on sh4 when im dead or the war ends (probably the former). Its march '44 in my current career so not long now before im playing for the allies either way. Im looking forward to giving it a proper run for the first time. Its graphics and sound effects are awesome and i like the lifeboat touch when you sink a ship. I cannot comment any further as i havent played it long enough to really experience it. I was wondering if there was any good grammophone tracks to download for it. I especially like the thought of some haiwian music like in sponge bob lol. It would definitely suit it.

My current campaign is synced so that, except for the year (obviously, lol), the game date is also the real-world's date. The game year so far is 1942. Whenever I load into a campaign I fast-forward it to the current time in my time zone (Pacific -8).

I am finding TMOwtw 2.50 better than RFB that I was previously using.

On a difficulty level I find both about the same

I also removed RSRDC as well to test out what TMO is all about.

As I expected RSRDC suppresses a lot of the capabilities of both RFB and TMO.

These two mods are complete packages in their own right.

Both have excellent and informative documentation that covers all you need to know.

At present it is too early to say whether RSRDC will be needed again in the future.

TMO has its own interesting campaign structure and also the crew abilities were being suppressed by RSRDC.

The Crew abilities and points rating may not be to every ones taste but personally I like it.

I found moving the crew in RFB became an irritation after a while.

It would not have been so bad if they were all moved to one compartment but you have to use 3.

RFB has a poor map unless you add other mods where as TMO you do not need to.

The other thing I am not sure on is whether to add back in Webster's Better Air Patrols.

For the moment the jury is out on that one as it was with RFB.

If you have never thought about the TMO light version then it is worth giving it a try as I can assure you, you will be pleasantly surprised with the interfaces graphics, shortcuts and icons.

These are all the mods I am using as with some of these larger interface mods you often find that less is more.

Hi avers

You were enquiring about.

"This is not a new MOD, but rather a simplified version of Trigger Maru Overhauled 2.5

It is meant for the younger or casual player and was intended as a middle step between the stock game and TMO 2.5. It is only intended for use with Silent Hunter IV patched to 1.5 or the Gold edition. As many as possible of the features of TMO have been left in place, the improved graphics, the command structure and all of the fun changes made by TMO over the stock game.

Here are some of the ways it differs from TMO:
The boxes, tails and ship outlines on the navigation map are like stock.

The Nomograph is gone.

The Next/Previous Unit keys, < > are enabled.

The enemy sensors are toned down a bit. Watch it, they are still very dangerous.

The Thermal Layer is very strong. If you are under the layer you can run right under an escort at 1/3 ahead on Silent Running and they may detect something, but they will not be able to locate you well enough to attack. The Thermal Layer is your best friend.

The Gramophone icon has been replaced by a ship draft chart. The buttons to work the Gramophone are on the bottom right corner of the chart.

The clock is a gold 1939 Hamilton, because I like it.

The deck gun loads in 4 seconds.

The torpedoes are very reliable during the early war years and get even better after mid 1943. If you want to change back to the poorly performing torpedoes that were in use during the early war years, you can enable the Historic Torpedoes MOD in the Support Folder/Optonal MODs.

The Sub underwater marker is back, sort of. It has been replaced by the wTw logo. There are MODs to remove the marker or change it back to stock in the Support Folder/Optional MODs

The Captains desk photo is the iconic Betty Grable pin-up pic, again becuase I like it."

Max Optics is included as an add-on and does not need a separate binocular add-on as it is already included.

if anyone is interested here is the download link.

Hi Red Devil

GFO RFB TMO TMOwTw are all user interface mods.

RSRDC is a Campaign mod.

You use RSRDC with your choice of interface and then you have a separate patch for RSRDC to work with it.

Hi Red Devil

I think you will have opened up a good debate with your question.

When SH4 came out in 2007 to have a mod like RFB to come on the scene must have been ground breaking.

Although RFB has been modded to v2.0 unfortunately it has not been touched for years which is a pity as other interface mods have been.

A lot of you guys have never heard of TMO v2.5 little brother TMOwtw 2.50 wTw stands for With Training Wheels.

Do not let that put you off as this is one hell of a good interface package with full campaigns and crew structures and a little lighter AI.

That is one reason why I say to anyone trying out this mod do not immediately stick RSRDC on it.

Have a look around the mod and you may be pleasantly surprised.

The graphics are very good and the coloured controls light when activated which is very useful to know what is operating.

The mod comes with very useful PDF instructions and also other useful information is included in the manual.

TMOwtw2.50 comes with Air Search Radar built in so there is no renown needed.

It has a special icon that takes the sub to Radar Depth which is a little higher than Periscope Depth.

The T key raises and lowers the Radar mast.

Very useful when you have gone deep and need to know what might be coming at you from above.

The mod also has Surface Hydrophone installed which is a static device.

This is combined with the Active Sonar and this device has its receivers mounted in the Conning Tower with a Range of 10,000 yards.

US subs in WWII actively used their hydrophones on the surface.

One of the best introductions is the F6 Attack Map Shortcut Key.

No mousing around trying to find the Attack Map Icon when the heat is turned up as the two shortcut keys take you between the Periscope and the Attack Map.

Talking about Periscopes you sort of have 3. Observation Scope and 2 Attack Scopes with their own icons.

One is for daytime and the other for nightime.

The nightime one allowing a little more light in.

The mod also comes with a useful add-on Max Optics for TMOwTw which includes the Binocular mod already built in.

Last but not least is if you go on the bridge and turn round you will notice the flag magically blowing in the wind. Oh yes it is the icing on the cake.

Hi Red Devil

You have to be careful with Webster’s mods as they are modded for Stock v1.4 or v1.5 and his GFO mod.

Some like his Better Air Patrols and Webster’s Eliminate Floating Plankton are compatible with most of the SH4 interfaces and certainly worth considering.

I would be interested to know what the 4 are you had no luck with.

Forgot to say, tried SH5 but since its crash-tastic I didnt get further than my first patrol (sink 50k shipping). Couldnt even make it back to a port, since it decided to crash withing 50k of any German yard. :0 Worst purchase ever.

So that's why I came back to Sh4 since Sh5 got me in the mood, that and the new "Victory at Sea" game I also got. Subs and ships in glorious combat, whats not to like :)

Just to update you on Post #46.

The ID icon in the Periscope Station sends the name of the target to the TDC along with the Mast Height so now you can pick out the target from the rec manual straight away if you still want to use it.

This is very useful in rough seas and when at long ranges.

TMOwTw 2.50
wTw 2.50 Max Optics with Crosshair
Webster's Eliminate Floating Plankton
Eye Patch for TMO v1.7
Bigger Better Protractors
Convoy Routes TMO+RSRD
Stop The Shouting
Pacific Sound Mod

I cannot praise this TMOwTw 2.50 lighter version of the mod TMO v2.5 high enough.

This little known mod is a complete package and deserves a lot more attention and recognition.

Personally I think it has a lot to offer over RFB.

As TMOwTw 2.50 is a complete package using RSRDC with it suppresses and overwrites a lot of TMOwtw 2.50 capabilities.

I have played it with RSRDC and am currently testing without it and to date I am not disappointed.

I think most of Webster's v1.4 versions are for stock?

Trigger Maru Overhaul 2.5 is a mega mod which changes many things and should always be installed first. You have the TMO version of RSRDC installed before TMO, so it won't work right.

I don't know about Newdepthcharges or some of the others, but Torpex Torpedos and Webs improved torps for 1.4 might conflict or interfere with each other.

Two weeks ago, August 12th 2014, I had the end of summer blues and was scrolling through Steam for a quick cheap game. Some how I ended up watching the Silent Hunter 5 trailer and after reading some reviews settled on Silent Hunter 4.

The following 14 days went something like this...

1. Read Manual.
2. Launched Vanilla Silent Hunters IV: Wolves of the Pacific.
3. Played Single Mission on 100% Realism. (it's the only way to go)
4. Read Manual again. (lol)
5. Searched "Silent Hunter 4 tutorials" via google.
6. Read CaptnScurvy's High Realism Tutorial and printed out AoB Calculator.
7. Downloaded Silent Hunters IV: U-Boat Missions.
8. Watched Rockin Robbin's Youtube tutorials.
9. Registered on subsim.com.
10. Read, read, read.
11. Download JSGME.
12. Download and activated Webster's GFO 1.1.
13. Download and activated CaptnScurvy's SCAF 1.5. (I know it was stated as being part of GFO 1.1, but I wasn't getting the Recognition Manual and graphics tweaks I was hoping for. NOTE: there are some CTD conflicts with this combination)
14. Watched movie 'U -571'.
15. Played CaptnScury's 'High Realism Tutorial Single Mission' 15 times until I could destroy a modern tanker at 100% realism in real time by sonar only with one eye closed. Thank you Dick O'Kane!
16. Download and activated a fresh set of mods starting with TMO 2.5 w/ career sub patch.
17. Read TMO Manual. (very, very much appreciated Ducimus)
18. Download and activated RSRDC for TMO 2.5 w/ fix.
19. Pay $5 to support my local subsim.com establishment out of the kindness of my heart.
20. Read 'The Submarine Commander's Handbook' (http://hnsa.org/doc/uboat/index.htm).
21. Downloaded and activate OTC 1.5(for TMO 2.5 + RSRDC) using realistic optics of course... :)
22. Started first American career campaign.
23. Watched movie 'Run Silent, Run Deep'.
24. Download and installed a heap of fred8615's music and radio station additions. Very nice!
25. Read "The Fleet Type Submarine Online" Manual (http://maritime.org/doc/fleetsub/index.htm).
26. Placed a hold on the book 'Run Silent, Run Deep' at my library.
27. Finished my first patrol with 5 ships down and very proud of myself.
28. Created personal submarine emblem for myself (256x256 targa file named emblem.tga placed into Data>Textures>TNormal>tex) and a kills.tga graphic as well. It's a shame too that I won't be able to see it in game on 100% Realism TMO 2.5, but I'll know it's there. :)
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/image.php?u=329860&dateline=1409104944&type=profile
29. Published my first post on subsim.com. (that is this one)
..................................
30. Preparing for resultant job loss and placement in doghouse by wife. :)

Looking forward to some good times.

A big thank you to the community out there and all of the work you've done. It is still being appreciated.

Cheers, JR

I have actually owned SH4 for a number of years, but my computers where never advanced enough to play it. They could play SH3 but not 4. I finally got a computer that could play 4, and I am sure you can only imagine my disappointment.

I downloaded all the patches, but I can't fix the black BB Colorado. The patches fixed most of my complaints, but I still can't get over how ridiculous the Sub looks when its in rough seas. The Sub is literally flying.

Don't the game designers know there is a small thing called Gravity? Anyway I was looking for a Mod to fix this problem, and I ended up here. The only problem is I have never messed with Mods, so I know nothing of how to install them.

Yea I'm trying to figure it out. I pretty much just want the fix for rough weather, and I think I would be happy.

I just downloaded Jsmga or whatever it is. I am reading through it, but I still don't know how it works. So now I guess I have to download the Mod, and then try to figure out how to activate it on the game.

I'm just returning to both SH3 and SH4. This is a good thread to read about some of the available mods. If anyone knows of a good thread in the SH3 section that discusses the high points of what each supermod for SH3 aims to accomplish that would be a great help. I'm finding the focus on complete realism to be good for fixing things but I also like to dial the realism to my personal preference.

For SH4 I think I will go with TMO first then try RFB.

This is when the sub is in rough waters. If you look at the sub, you can see that there is no gravity in the game. When a large wave picks the sub up, the wave continues past the sub and the sub just kind of floats in mid air for about 10 to 20 seconds until the next wave.

There are also some cool videos of people super modifying there subs. I think utube has a couple. Someone made there sub so powerful that it was able to jump out of the water like a dolphin over and over.

Cant say I have noticed, will check it next time out

I would like to get a mod that corrects the voices of the crew. My crew for example will not say rudder amidships. They just say rudder, rudder. It drives me batty.

There are a few other things they say that are incorrect. Has anyone made a mod that fixes this?

I hope I am doing this Mod stuff right. I added a Mod Folder next to the Data Folder. Then I copied the JSMGA stuff into the Mod Folder. Then I put my first Mod (realistic waves) into the same folder.

Then I double clicked on the JSM and told it to activate the Mod. Is that correct? So far my game has not crashed and I have not been in a serious storm yet, so no way to know if its working.

Last but not least. Has anyone figured out how to fix the Black Colorado Battleship? I have noted that it is being caused by the 1.4 patch. The 1.3 patch adds the Colorado.

Then the 1.4 patch adds other stuff, and everything works right after the 1.4 patch has been added, but if you shut the computer off and reboot, then try to play the game, the Colorado has a black skin, but the gun turrets are still the proper color.

Guess I'm not doing it right. I just added that sound Mod the same way, and I played my current Campaign. Didn't hear any new sounds.

I found its best to use a zip prog (7 Zip) to open archives and then place the new files manually into the relevant folders. The drawback, you cannot simply withdraw them by reversing a mod, you are stuck with them unless you make a back up of the relevant folder before changing it.

I use jsgme mod enabler for most of my games. Just put a copy of it in the root folder and it will create a file called MODS and off you go.

I am using JSGME also. When you say Root Menu, you mean the basic menu? Like when right click on the shortcut, I click on find target and it brings up the basic program menu.

That menu has data, registration, blablablabla (you get the idea). Is this what you are referring to when you say root menu?

Oops. I meant root folder of the game. Install jsgme in the main root folder of the game and it will create a file called MODS. Put your unzipped mods in there, then start jsgme and they should show up there.

By the way. I am considering starting to play sh4 again because I can't find opponents for Dangerous Waters. I never did get to try multiplayer sh4 because no one ever seemed to be in the lobby when they used to have one. I always wanted to try american subs versus Japanese surface as I can't stand cooperative multiplayer like they had in sh3. I would rather play against human opponents rather than all the players being on one team versus the AI.

I'm currently playing OM as a Type II-B skipper. It's pretty easy (Still 1939) since most of the merchants are without escorts and my biggest problem is saving enough fuel for home trip and sinking ships since I only have 5 torpedoes. I hope that once the happy times start I will be able to transfer to Type VII based in Norway or France.

I am!

Have been fascinated by Sub Sims all my life and purchased several over the years, but never got around to wrapping my head around the mechanics and usually fell in between being bored by the auto-targeting and not succeeding in grasping the manual targeting in time before getting fed up with it.

Now I am a little older and I did try again and wow, I love this stuff. I look like a madman with my scribble book, headphones on and yelling commands into the microphone and I love every minute of it.

Still getting in some experience in SH4 vanilla, but I probably will be starting using mods in a short while.

I've recently returned (because of a newer computer.) The one I had back in 2011 was barely handling the game. Playing it on the new one is great fun. Some of the new environmental mods (that will now run great on my "average" new graphics card) have done much for my enjoyment of the game.

I wonder how many others are like me. I also play SH5 (but again just barely. I think most people running average new computers (not bought specifically for gaming) are still barely able to get into SH5. I may be way of base here, but I think that's one of the reasons for poor sales (not often mentioned) and the move to browser-based gaming by the industry at-large.

Ahoy all,

I've just started to play SH4 + SH4 Wolves of the Pacific (v.1.5)....
After viewing many YT SH4 videos, I got some great advice from old SH3 and SH4 players that told me that SH4 had some great MODs that would give me some great REAL WWII sub sim action.

So after doing a first patrol in vanilla and getting my hand on some of the main SH4 command with a WWII sub, I did what most of you (after reading almost all the replies) did... got myself this incredible MOD ( 1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5 ) - a big thx to Ducimus for this mod!!!

The learning curve is really big for a noob, but what an incredible feeling sinking a 11 000 pound oil tanker for my first merchant kill! ;)

I'm now trying for the first time the RSRD and OM MODs for a U-Boat experience near Great Britain (Atlantic Area). At this time, those mods are great... but got just one question for the old SH4 players, do you know if I can get the same (no color for ships) like in TMO. I think that this option makes it more real for me. You need to get more information before setting up for a torpedo kill.

My List of MOD for now. Feel free to give your best mod to add with TMO or OM!

- 1_TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5
- RSRD_SH15_V550
- RSRD_ V5xx_Patch1
- OpsMonsun_V705
- OMv705_to_V720
- OMV720_Patch5
- OMEGU_V300_pkg
- OMEGU_V300_Patch7

note: if you have a mod or tool to add insignia to the U-Boat sub tower, plz send me the links or info...would love to add this to my U-51! ;)

I just started playing and it's my passion now. I'm reading, watching videos, modding, but actually not doing too much playing yet. I play a little, then read or change something, play a little longer, etc. but I think I have a grasp on everything and have everything tweaked just right to be satisfied.

I'm playing with RFB with all realism, except for the cameras. I don't use them to cheat, I just love getting that cinematic view! It really looks beautiful for such an older game.

I wish they had a game like this for a B-17. Yes, I know of that older one, but I cant get over the bad graphics on that one. :shifty:

OpsMonsun makes all contacts Gray, and should also include U-Boat markings for the Turmumbau (conning tower), which can be done in-port in the U-boat upgrade screen.

What's happening is your mod-order. TMO and OM DO NOT play well together.

You have 2 options: Drop one of them, or use MultiSH4 (I'd recommend MultiSH4).

Hi Warren Peace,

Thx for the follow up.
My list should have been cut in two... TMO is one, and the rest of the mods are for OM with RSRD. Also, I know my error for the grey contacts, the folder of OMEGU was a package, so after placing only the OMEGU folder in the MOD folder, I got to try the real OM U-Boat MOD (with my very own insignia for my U-56!

It's been well over a year since I've played and visited the forums, I'm glad that they are still active, albeit with less traffic, which is understandable for such an "old" game. My old computer died, hard drive failure :wah: and now I have a Win 7 system, still "old" too because I see that Win 10 is coming out soon, which is good enough for me now :) Currently the game is pure vanilla with the 1.4 mod. I just started my 1st patrol and am closing in on the Honshu patrol area, no contacts yet. Because I am an older player, turning 65 in October, I tend to forget things (lol) so all of this leads to 2 questions. What is the patrol area radius, my mind tells me it's 30 miles or so, and what is the minimum time that is needed to remain there??

Good to be back, for how long who knows, but I'm excited right now!!:salute: Good luck to you guys too!! Herr Eeguy (yeah I know that this is a German name-ish but it's a good, funny one mainly because I'm bald!!)

Hey there. I'm back playing after a few years away. Threw my old disc in the bin in disgust after endless problems which Ubisoft wouldn't address including being unable to sign in to their website. Was recently tempted back after seeing all the mods and information available on this excellent site. Glad I did it's a "deep" game :03:.

Currently running TMO and RSRD with appropriate patches along with improved ship physics. May try to up my mod soup when i begin my next campaign.

Based out of Pearl for this one just about to to start patrol number 8 with my new Balao class boat. No more sweating at 450 feet... i can sweat a bit deeper now :D

Loving it!

Thanks to all the modders and those who post articles without which I would have been a bit lost.

I also am getting back into SH4 after a long absence. I tried using SH5 but just couldn't get the hang of the torp attack. I'm a non manual TDC player and all the mega-mods have it included. Berb tried helping me get it so the circles were back but I could never get them to reappear.

On a different note. Does anyone know if the multiplayer lines are still active? I lost the user code and not needed if the multiplayer aspect isn't supported anymore.

Just thought of one more question. Can anyone here make a signature for this page? I've never learned that skill set and I'd like to get a sig with my Type IX and my U-Boat number.

Still playing off and on. Usually, the game's bugginess ends up really pissing me off and I end up putting the game aside for a month or three before coming back. I run TMO with a few small mods and some hand tuning.

Currently playing a campaign I've been playing for the better part of a year now. Started at the beginning of the war in an s-boat, now on patrol #12 in december of 43 commanding the balao.

I just recently picked it up as I got myself on a bit of a sub-fix by playing the superb board game Silent War. I had SH5 sitting in my Steam account for the longest time so I started with that a few weeks ago, though naturally I fully intended to hop in a fleet boat if I found I enjoyed the core gameplay of the series.

It was slightly disappointing not being able to walk (or float) around the whole sub in order to really get a sense of the size difference between the fleet boats and U-Boats. So far though I'm really enjoying the the more captain-centered perspective of SH4.

I'm currently running RFB + RSRD and liking what I see so far mod-wise, except for the lack of "real navigation". Being able to plot a nice neat search pattern in the middle of a typhoon and chugging right along it at x2000+ TC just doesn't work for me. Is there a current SH3/SH5 style RealNav mod for SH4 1.5/RFB? This (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=525) is the only one I could find, and it wasn't compatible with either stock 1.5, RFB, or TMO.

I wonder why there is no Fleet boat interior mod, there are plenty of fleet boat museums in the U.S. So it is possible to see the full interior of a fleet boat.

Cool, a fellow boardgamer. Never played that one though, did you ever try Battle of the Atlantic? I wonder how they compare. Different designers, but they're both solitaire strategic level games. Well, unless the description I saw of Silent War was misleading.

At a guess it's probably because it's a *lot* of work and I honestly doubt most of us care that much about it.

I imagine it would be a huge amount of work, beyond just the modelling, getting the crew and player to be able to move around and interact seems like it would be quite a project.

When I was in cub scouts I got to sleep on board the Torsk in Baltimore harbor, and we got to have ice cream from the machine in the mess. :D (not sure if it's original or reproduction) I really ought to go back there soon, been a while since I've went. I'll also have to make a trip to Kiel some time to see the only surviving Type VII and really get some perspective on the size difference.

I haven't heard of that one, is it this Battle of the Atlantic (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12202/battle-atlantic)? (apparently up for reprint by OSS, who have been doing some good stuff)

Yep, Silent War is solitaire and on a strategic to operational scale and the intent is to take the role of COMSUBPAC by focusing on patrol organization and doctrine. Turns are weekly and individual subs are deployed to a choice of sea lane areas that evolve in density and type of traffic as the war progresses. Combat is by individual sub, but it's pretty abstract and is really just the place where you enact your target doctrine. It's definitely much more of a "study sim" (but quite addictive, "just one more patrol before bed") compared to Silent Hunter, you're required to meet/exceed historical tonnage levels at set deadlines or you get fired (game over) which can be extremely difficult. If the torpedo scandal as portrayed by SH4+mods makes you swear, Silent War will make you want to tear your hair out as you come up a few thousand tons short of a quota. I have had to set up spreadsheets to track stuff like weekly patrol/contact rate, contact/victory rate, tonnage/patrol rate, etc. It gives you a very appropriately cold and cerebral feeling of the nature of tonnage war, the designer (Brien Miller) describes it quite aptly as playing "the chief financial officer of the Grim Reaper". But if you want a well researched/tested simulation (the statistical model is designed so as to be able to output historic tonnage and sub loss levels when the historic patrols are inputted) of the US submarine campaign, I doubt you can find anything better.

As far as other sub board games, the same designer also has another game, Steel Wolves, that uses the same system as Silent War for the German WWII Atlantic campaign. (the system designed specifically to be able to simulate both campaigns) I haven't picked that one up yet though. He also has mentioned another entry in the series covering WWI U-Boats, but I haven't heard anything about that in a while. There's also a solo tactical WWII U-Boat game called The Hunters (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/113873/hunters-german-u-boats-war-1939-43) that I've heard really good things about. And of course, that designer is also working on a Pacific version of the system.

Ahhh. The smell of die cut cardboard in the morning. It smells like Victory ...in the Pacific.

Thanks Avalon Hill. That's how I got my introduction to this theater. :O:

If you want to really wake up to the smell of die cut cardboard, how about Decision Games' remake (only slightly changed/added on to) of SPI's old War in the Pacific (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22843/war-pacific-second-edition)? 32 sheets of 1/2" counters (~9000 total) and 7 22x34" map sheets. Note: I, nor I imagine anyone who actually owns it, have actually played it.

For something slightly less insane (and actually playable), the 80's classic Pacific War by Mark Herman/Victory Games is supposedly due for a reprint sometime in the future.

If you eschew the look, feel, and smell of cardboard, there is always Columbia Games' Pacific Victory. Nice chunky wood block counters (which mask your deployment and keep track of losses), lower counter density (less than 100 blocks), and playable in well under an entire lifetime. Strategic issues are well represented.

Actually, I do still own a copy of Herman's Pacific War. Unfortunately, my cat often pwned it when I was still playing. :D I would often find counters scattered all over the Pacific Rim. Was only too happy to switch to computer games at that point.

I do own Columbia Games East Front, although I haven't cracked it open in years. They used the same wood block system for the Russo-German war of 1941-45. I wasn't aware there was a Pacific War version.

SH4 2015 newbie.

And I find SH4 really has a "rocks" rated potential!

I've first started with SH4 patched to v1.4.

Now, as I have just received my ordered SH4 v1.5 DVD, I'm discovering all the new features that it's in this v1.5.

For the moment, I love starting at Manila, asiatic fleet, in 1941 with a Air search radar equiped Sargo Class sub.

Then I just head on to the Luzon strait, where about half the japs of that time invading South-east asia naval task forces will go threw.

And report ENY task forces encountered to HQ and attack.

Thus, the really good ENY AI about recon air patrols over the indeed military important Luzon strait makes it quit challenging! :)

Best place to meet the jap invasion fleet on patrol one from Manilla, is between Luzon and the Lingayen bay to the south, where they land. Or go direct to the bay, sit in the middle and wait!! Nice Mogami cruisers, and loads of infantry ships. Its only local so hit the gas!!

Orbazan, you know a version of that with English language would be a big thing! I certainly would download it. I'm going to download it anyway.

Did you know that a Soviet submarine commander was responsible for the fact that we didn't have a nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis? All the leaders, all the diplomats, all the generals and admirals were reduced to nothing and a single man in a submarine determined the fate of the world with one heroic and fateful decision.

have put in manually many mods listed for sh4 and even a few sh5 mods- mainly torp upgrade-deck gun upgrade and number of guns-smaller radar reports-tower upgrade to 2 aa guns-better radar-and several others.
still have not found anyway to switch to fore or aft deck guns during battle like you can between the aa guns-wish there was a way!

I think I commented already on this thread (not sure)

I play it at maximum settings, and it runs beautifully. The game looks utterly incredible, even by today's standards, and it provides a submarine simulation that is so accurate and amazing, one that has never been beaten. And don't even start on the community. :salute: love you Subsim :salute:

I must try that one day, max settings. I do admit I play it as a game first and foremost and have it set on 'normal'.

The reason for that is another game, FC2; which when set on highest is almost impossible as they know I am coming before I do! So when I play it 'normal' its actually realistic.

Keep up the good work Captain

Thanks a bunch, Devil. Like you said, you should really try it on ultra. It's looks incredibly realistic, especially in the rain or at sunset. I really enjoy just stopping the sub and watching.

yes, i am playing SH$. Got to the party earlier this year. the problem was that i working with a WinXP machine that was maxed at 1G RAM. bought the SH4 1.5 version and loaded on a work laptop with 3G RAM and fell in love. went out and bought a new DELL with 8G RAM I7 quad. it screams.

so, now i am reviewing all of the posts from 2007-8 when the sim first appeared. making some mods of my own. nothing big and hairy just tweaks here and there. always interested in discussions.

Talking of airplane reduction. I just go into the air.cfg file and reduce ranges. Before it was untweaked I once had to dive near pearl due to air attack!!! :haha:

Since I'm playing on a toaster (Pentium 4 CPU) I really can't play newer games (not that I even want to). I just stick with my sims and strategy games. :O:

Hi guys,

Love this game still!
Unfortunately I'm not using any mods as I'm a total klutz when it comes to things like that; I don't understand how to link them to the game, where to store them etc etc.....
If anyone would be so kind as to help me that'd be fantastic!
Think of me as your 92 year old granny.......I have no concept of files, mods etc....
Merry Christmas dudes!

I'll try to provide a short outline of what you need to do.

1. You should have v1.5 of Silent Hunter 4. This is the latest version of the game and is required for most mods. It's the 'U-boat missions' version. It doesn't matter if you want to play U-boats or not; you still need this version.

2. You should install the game in a place other than program files. For example: C:\MyGames\SilentHunter4

3. Get '7-zip' and install that. You will need this to unzip mods that you download. Most mods/files/programs you download will be in some kind of compressed format. It can unzip most any format of file.

4. Install JSGME. You unzip, and install this in the SH4 folder and run it. It should create a 'Mods' folder in your game folder. It will allow you to install/uninstall mods much more easily. Most mods are 'JSGME ready', so they can be conveniently installed by JSGME. The alternative is to manually exchange files yourself, which is a lot more trouble when large number of files are involved.

5. Download one, or a few mods, unzip them and put them in the 'Mods' folder JSGME created, where your game is installed.

Make sure that that you do not have an extra folder when the mods are installed. The folder structure should be like this:

..\Mods\XYZmod\Data...

not:

..\Mods\XYZmod\XYZmod\Data...

If there is an extra folder, it will prevent JSGME from swapping out the files in the mod, and you will not get any benefit from the mod.

6. Run JSGME, and activate the mods you want to use. Then start up the game, and play.

You can get 7-zip and JSGME HERE (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=219029&page=2).

Just read up on that. It is quite interesting.

Im still playing SH4. For me personally its a lot more stable then SH5 ever since i tried to play Wolves of Steel on SH5 it was a nightmare and i gave up even trying to play that sim. Besides i prefer the U.S. SUBS over the German subs!

Hello!

Hello!
I have Sh4-1.5 OpMonszun-al-TriggerMaru25. and I love playing it.
Now the SH3-GWX favorite.
The SH5 I do not like, is full of bugs and very al "ARKAD", different from the
from a historical fact. Managing unnecessarily more difficult.

Ever I played SH4 - with mods - and it continues to be a very enjoyable experience. From the old times of SH1 I like PTO and Fleet Boats.

But also I playing SH5 with TWoS. I can secure you SH5 isn´t more the crappy incomplete buggie game of the early times. The hard work of the modders was awesome. The gameplay is a lot improved and the game have new functions - unthinkable in others SHs. I think - if you bought SH5 and have abandoned it - is a good idea to try TWoS and see the changes. It is another game.

Best regards!
