Greetings and salutations, Let me start off and say that I'm new to this site and have briefly played SH3 years ago. Right now I'm playing SH4 with the u-boat add on and will be buying SH5 next month. So far I'm loving the game but there are little things that irk me. For example my deck watch doesn't seem to ever want to take there post. I've gone and manually rotated my crew and that fixed it for about 5 seconds then they got lazy again. I also have no alarm warnings, klaxons, or anyone yelling battle stations when I give the command. Again nothing game breaking just a bunch of little annoying things.
Now I want to mod both SH4 and 5. My first download will be the mod manager. Forgot what it's called. I would greatly appreciate mod suggestions from you guys. I would prefer to use mods compatible with this manager as it will make my mod management that much easier. When you list your mod suggestions please say whether it is for 4, or 5. Also if you could provide direct links to your suggestions that would be a plus.
Now to start off with I need my crew to function properly. This means I shouldn't have to wonder where the hell they are lol. Also if I can make them behave more realistically that would be even better. I also want all my alarms to sound. I want to hear battle stations called out followed by the alarm. I want my dive klaxon, and a overall sound improvement in general to be honest. I want to hear depth charges, ships getting closer, ships breaking up under water ect ect. the stock sfx are really poor and or too soft or non existent.
I want fire to actually cause damage. I want a massive graphics overhaul including realistic environments and weather affects as well as better explosions. One thing that irks me so far in 4 is that the ocean is ALWAYS calm. That's not realistic for me. I want everything to look as real as possible. I want fuel, battery, o2, and co2 to have real life values based on there real life counterparts. A mod that shows enemy fov would be outstanding. I pretty much just want to have the best and most realistic experience possible with 1 exception. The one thing that I really don't want to change is the AI difficulty. I am by no means a expert at this game. I'm not a noob either. I would say I'm on the low end of the experienced spectrum. I know what I'm doing but still need to refine my skills and tactics.
Right now in 4 I'm just re learning how to play the series so I'm playing with unlimited everything and auto torp targeting. When I play 5, I will have all settings set to realistic with the exception of the torps as I royally suck at math big time lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post. This is just a series that I'm really in love with.
EDIT, I would also love some added missions to prolong my enjoyment :) EDIT 2, In regards to sh5, I would love my crew to speak German at all times but my notification journal must be in English so i can understand what there saying. EDIT 3, I guess I should mention that I'm using the steam version of sh4. I've read that it can be difficult to mod with steam so I'm putting that out there. In regards to sh5 I know i need the gold version to save myself a headache. Is it ok to buy the gold download version from amazon or do I (NEED) a physical copy in order to mod?

Straight to brass tacks. First, I mostly play SH3 and SH4, as my computer won't run SH5. That said, I'll help where I can.

I'm not sure what the problem is there. I've played SH4 for several years without ever experiencing that. There are many players here, though, and some of them have to have gone through the same troubles. Hopefully one of them will have the answer.

Usually those things happen on the American side, and not with the u-boats, at least as far as I recall. Are you also not having that happen with American boats?
If you're switching back and forth between sides that might cause problems. It takes up extra space on the hard drive but with Multi-SH4 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1110) you can run several campaigns at the same time, each using a separate game installation. This is essential if you want each side to speak the correct language, as SH4 only supports one at a time.
Now I want to mod both SH4 and 5. My first download will be the mod manager. Forgot what it's called.

If you're running an American campaign there are several good ones. For the German side you need Operation Monsun and its add-ons. Of course I also recommend the Das Boot Sound Mod for any German campaign, but that's partly because I love it and partly because I'm biased, having assembled the ones for SH3 and SH4.

For SH4 we need to figure out why you're having that problem. For SH5 there is no problem, because there's no crew; just a handful of officers and specialists who talk to you, but not much.
EDIT 2, In regards to sh5, I would love my crew to speak German at all times but my notification journal must be in English so i can understand what there saying.
When you first load up SH5 you need to look for the prompt that makes all the voices German. After that you're good to go. If you miss it there is at least one mod that replaces all the English files with German ones. There are also two excellent DBSM mods available for SH5.

In regards to sh5 I know i need the gold version to save myself a headache. Is it ok to buy the gold download version from amazon or do I (NEED) a physical copy in order to mod?
You don't need the Gold version for anything, other than a couple of extra ships that were unlockable only through the UBI site. On the other hand, the prices these days are about the same, so Gold is as good as any other version.
I've heard that the Amazon download is just fine. I always get the disc, but that's just me. After all is said and done, have fun. :rock:

Thanks for the info! As far as my audio and crew problems are concerned I've only been playing on the American campaign so all of these issues have to do with that as I haven't touched the u-boat add-on content yet. The das boot mod, is that for 4 only or 5 as well? Also what are DBSM mods? I've been watching some lets play videos and i see mighty fine crew and I believe it's called distant horizons or something along those lines where it increases the campaign to 1945. would these be recommended? Also should I consider any unofficial patches on top of the latest build? I know Ubisoft half assed sh4-5 to a extent.

Ok, so this is wierd. I have been subbed to this site for 2 days now. Yesterday I downloaded my first 5 files which is my daily limit. Today I log in and downloaded improved stock environment v3 by Caustic for sh4. Once i got that in I went to download more mods but I get a message saying I reached my daily download limit. The problem is I should still have 4 downloads left yet I;m being told I have non left. Why is this happening?

Ok so I'm looking to download open horizons for sh5. I have some questions and also need some clarification. First off when I download this mod do I need the base and then the patch or do I just download the 2.5 version? The type ix add-on, is that the actual boat or is it stats only? Also very important is what environment mods should I use if any with this that will make everything extremely realistic? This includes water, fog, smoke, fire, explosions, and weather. Also I'm having trouble finding the mod that makes fire actually damage ships. Any help with this stuff would be greatly appreciated. Almost forgot, would I be advised to download the latest version of generic patcher with this?
EDIT, With the decks awash command, is that native to stock sh5 or do I need to download a mod for that? If so where do I find it?

Another question although a bit off topic. I recently heard about the movie das boot. Shocking I know lol. I would love to watch this movie but I ran into a problem. I can't find it with English subtitles. I can find it with subtitles in every language except English. Does anybody know where I can stream this video so I can understand it or do I need to buy a physical copy of the movie?

Thanks THEBERBSTER. I've been reading up on sober's mod list and that has helped me greatly. That being said I have run into some difficulty. The generic patcher download. It confuses the hell out of me. It sounds way way way more complicated then what it probably is. I've read all the documentation on it and I still don't have a clue lol. Is this something I (REALLY) need or can I do without?
EDIT, So I just read post #40 regarding decks awash and I do need the generic patcher. This makes things very difficult. I wish there was a simpler way to get that mod to work. I'm, gonna have to have a friend who is more knowledgeable then me read up on it then use team viewer to help me get this installed and working without giving me a migraine.

I just spent quite a few hours reading your guide and it's very helpful. The instructions that are on the mod page just seemed way too complicated. The step by step instructions that are in your guide are practically idiot proof lol. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I think part of the problem is (for me anyways) that there is a lot of conflicting info. For example I've noticed that some of the larger and more popular mods will have links in them for several threads where there are more then one version of the mod and or several install instructions on various pages where the info conflicts with each other. This is where everything starts getting confusing lol. Anyways your guide made my life that much easier so thank you.
EDIT, I know sh5 only has one (class) of sub. The type vii. I was wondering if when you get a new sub is it a (upgrade) U21 viia to U21 viib, or do you get a completely new sub in which case you have to re purchase all previous upgrades with renown?

Have a look at Post #35.
Sobers and Myself are both using mod lists that are stable.
You can pick and choose which ones you want to use.
There are mods that cheat the system by allowing you free and different upgrades.
Go to the 'Downloads Tab' and go to SH5.

The das boot mod, is that for 4 only or 5 as well?
If your refering to the sound mod, I did one for SH3 and one for SH4. Two separate versions have been done by others specifically for SH5
Also what are DBSM mods?

I have a question in regards to open horizons v2.5. Am I correct in the fact that v2.5 allows me to play the stock tutorial without causing problems or is the tutorial mentioned one of the custom tutorials in which it uses real navigation? I would rather stay away from that stuff until I'm more comfortable playing this game.

Do the tutorial with no mods enabled. Also even with Mega mods like 'Sobers" ect you dont have to use real nav...... It is realistic but I have alot of mods and I do not use Real Nav. Nothing wrong with it just not my taste, I love realism but not to that extreme.

Ya I agree with you. For me there's the fact that I can't do math to save my life lol, so I have to play with auto torps. It also seems that for me anyways real navigation would suck some of the fun out. That's just me though. I am going through sobers mod list 1 by 1 and picking what I want and then try to install them in order 1 by 1 based on how it's set up in his list. Taken forever though. Wish I could afford to donate at-least 5 bucks to increase my daily download limit. It sucks being broke lol.

Also I have scoured all the download sections looking for the mod that makes fire do progressive damage to ships and I still can't find it. TDW NewUI is a collection of 15 mods that apart from Mod 3 the rest are not compulsory.
The advantage with this mod is the ability to teleport to different stations and give the officers that are icons that sit at the bottom of your screen various orders.

Treat the GFP as a separate issue.

I would have to disagree that real nav would suck the fun out of the sim . And auto loading for torps is ok , but the german TDC is alot more accurate than Sh4s american model . There are so many tutorials that explain real nav and whatever questions about going 100%.. Such a huge differance in playing SH5 modded and @ 100%. Example
Since Iam doing a patrol in the med . I recently had a visual contact at my starboard beam I looked in the binoculars and saw nothing I asked the WO to give me a update . . I than dived and went to periscope depth, raised my persicope depth and panned around .. Saw Nothing , went to the hydro station and got nothing . By this time I figured it was another sub beginning to hunt my boat , because the contact went silent and than moved . You heard the screws turn and than go off . I orderd to go silent . and heard the contact sporadiaccly move . I took a chance and went back to periscope depth , putting my scope in the direction of the last known bearing . as I panned around it was a dam fishing boat that kept stopping and starting .. Now funny this is enemy subs act like this in the game. If I did not have this sim modded like this it would be just another point and shoot and or my boat getting torped buy this enemy sub .. This is the differance in the stock verses modded . There are many simmers here that are willing to offer direction in going 100% .. go for it !

Using Real Navigation has got nothing to do with maths.
The main difference is you do not have waypoints.
The main requirement is plotting a course with your ‘Compass’ and then making the direction change.
Your Navigator gives you 2 hour positional updates and you can do your own at any time.
You do not have to play at 100% as its your choice.
You can change any of the settings in Gameplay Options to change from the default ‘Realistic’ to your ‘Custom’ settings.
If you want to use ‘Map Contacts, Event Camera or External Camera, or No Dud Torpedoes, its your bloody game you can do what you want.
You do not have to have ‘Auto Loading Torpedoes.
If you want to turn it off permanently then use TDW’s Options File Editor Viewer.

Wow, that's a good story. If I thought I was being stalked by a sub I would panic as I wouldn't know what the hell to do. If I recall properly only 1 sub in the history of ww2 was torpedoed by another while submerged. That would be 1 hell of a shot if you could pull it off.

Thanks again for the info and the link. By the way when I was talking about auto torp I meant auto targeting. I always manually reload. There will probably be some mods that I leave out for my first campaign just to get a feel for everything then install them for a second tour after I'm more familiar and comfortable. Speaking of which how much will the ai difficulty ramp up if I use IRAI? I don't want stupid ai but I don't want to get steamrolled either lol.
EDIT, I downloaded 1 mod today and now I can't download anything else. This is the second time I've had this problem. When does the available downloads reset? Is it based on when the last time you downloaded a file was?

Stock IRAI is like shooting at a goal with no goalkeeper.
IRAI 41 will give you a challenge
IRAI 39 is less challenging but you will need the mod patch that goes with it.
Go to the Download Tab select SH5 go to the Patches Icon
You may have to look around to find both parts or try Google

Thanks again. I just got my digital copy of sh5 through amazon and I only paid 6 bucks plus tax. Dirt cheap! Now to start getting stuff working. FYI, I used the link on the subsim main page so enjoy the commision :)

i just got the game installed and made my uplay account. got a message saying I don't meet the min system req because my graphics driver is out of date but it's not. I have the latest nvidia driver for my gtx 660. Is this going to cause a conflict or should I just ignore it? Also I've heard mention of playing in offline mode. Is this recommended?
EDIT, After reading the OH2 v2.5 page I noticed it said to play the tutorial in stock without mods then after you get the green tick exit the game and install mods. What is meant by (green tick)?

Well I just did the tutorial and that was absolute garbage. The worst tutorial I've ever played! I don't know what the hell ubisoft was thinking. Despite all the people complaining about sh4's tutorial it was far better and more in depth then this. Half the mandatory functions weren't even enabled and most things had absolutely no info forcing you to guess at everything all while being shot at lol. My only saving grace was my knowledge of previous titles.
The graphics were good though :) Not as good as they'll be once i'm done with it :D I wanted to say gratz on the generic patcher. Out of 8 torps I fired only 1 actually made it to the target and detonated. The rest were duds or prematures. This is as it should be in 1939. I already can't wait till later in the war so torps actually do what there supposed to lol. It gives a sense of what the real captains had to go through early on. Few more days and I'll be completely moded and ready to play for real.

The duds weren't the biggest problem. Out of the 8 I fired 1 hit, 2 were duds, and the rest were prematures. Thats a little over half my total supply for premies. I might tweak the lvls a tiny bit in generic patcher but in all I'm very happy with the changes it made to the base game. :up:

I was referring to playing the stock tutorial with no mods. What I did was install the game, update to v1.2, toggle start in offline mode, installed and set up generic patcher, played the tutorial till I got the green tick, exited the game, started installing mods. I did it this way as described so I would have no problems when I use open horizons v2.5. So the torpedo problems I described were just with the generic patcher and nothing else. In the process of installing mods now which leads me to a new problem.
TDC'S NEW UI V7_5_0. I cannot extract all the files. I keep getting a error message when extracting telling me some files couldn't be unzipped. So all I have is the dials folder which contains the American and any folders. WTH am I doing wrong here? For reference I'm using the latest version of winzip.
EDIT, I would like to use REAL German flags in place of the stock ones. I know they weren't included for legal reasons but you KNOW they were there so I figured I'd use them for immersion sake. Is it part of any mod or will I need a standalone mod? If it's a standalone where would I install it going by sobers mod list?
EDIT2, I just got it to download ALL the files. Apparently I had to be more specific then usual with my extract path. In any rate I'm back in business.

I have a question regarding R.E.M. I'm pretty sure I figured it out but I wanted to ask and make sure before I do something stupid plus the readme file doesn't explain this part unless I completely glossed over it.
There are 4 files when you extract it. The 1.2 main file. This obviously has to be installed first. Then there's no hydrophone on surface. This must be a option? Hydrophone mute for player fix (tdw compatible). Since I'm using tdw new ui v7_5_0, I would assume I need this? Also what exactly does it do? Is there a bug with the hydro that this is supposed to fix? And last there is hydrophone mute for player fix. I assume I don't need this as I would think I have to use the tdw compatible version? If I'm correct with all this then in what order do I enable these after the main file? Again all the readme says is to put the main file in the mods folder and enable so I want to make absolute sure.

Thanks for the clarification. As far as env mods I do have dynamic envi. I'm just not sure if any part of that mod changes the hue of the water from a blue to more of a green which I prefer. Anyways I'm probably looking at another day or two of downloading then I should be more or less ready. I will post my mod list then to make sure I didn't overlook something.

Ok, hopefully I'm ready now. I have installed everything that I want at this point. You will notice that I left out certain mods most notably IRAI, and R.S.D. This was intentional. I have only played the tutorial so before I start ramping up the difficulty I would first like to learn the game with the mods I have enabled at this point. My mods were installed in order according to sobers list. My list will contain some options of the listed mods that sober doesn't have listed because he chose not to enable them per his playstyle.

I also did the debugging change in note pad per the instructions for installing new ui's as well as enabled snorkels for the type 7c and 7c/41. I forgot to enable Sjizzles charts in note pad so I'm gonna do that now. I don't know why I downloaded a second mine field map lol. That's what happens when you spend a whole day reading mod instructions, downloading, extracting, installing, and making sure you do everything right lol.
I was reading some other threads last night and I noticed one in particuliar that caught my attention. It seems that if you get to close to the ocean floor then you will take damage even though your not close to touching it. Is there a fix for this or is it something I need to keep in mind when diving deep? It would be awsome if I could just come to rest on the sea floor, cut my engines, rig for silent running and wait for a pursuing destroyer to get some distance. oh well.

No there is no fix for that, I really wish it was. The sea floor bottom thing is one of the reasons I get pissed and play SH4 more than SH5

I don't blame you. It's a pretty big oversite. I mean why would you add the sea floor if it's just for show? Yes you should take damage if your not careful but at the same time you should be able to maneuver your sub into position if your careful enough.

I just want something to add realistic moonlight to the environment as usually the moon is just a static object. Would this be a good choice or should I combine it with something else or go for a different mod all together?

I use "DynEnv v2.9 - 5.c Ambient Settings - Darker Nights-No Murky Waters" nut thats all I have as far as that goes. It really up to you, sometimes though with that mod as real as it is, its very hard to see at night when weather is cloudy or bad. But I take this as real and move on

Problem with the subflags was i had ctd's from a fresh career (actually on initial save after docking in kiel after baltic operations) , as i was already at sea i tried bunker install later on, worked fine .......
I installed on a bunker save, i think it was sometime after east british coast (in oh 2.5) , thinking back i assume it was after i got rebased and wasn't to see kiel again :)
I am about to add my flags back, i need a merchant or two to finish the eastern british coast, so i'm rebased when i get back, so flags-r-us again lol
I got all the way to south western (2nd after scapa flow i think) with my flags on previously, before dying and adding/messing with mods and starting another career

I need some help. I ran into a major problem. When I load into the game and get to the main menu all I see is silent hunter 5 battle of the atlantic. There is no open horizons text of any kind. I spoke with World_Devastator and he said it doesn't look right in my mods list. What I mean by this is that if you look closely it just says oh2v2.5 when it should say openhorizons2v2.5. He also told me that within my oh2 folder should be a mods folder. I don't have that. When I open the folder i see a data folder and a documents folder.
I have redownloaded the file several times and I'm not getting the mods folder, just data and documents. Also when I go to the mod manager, right click on the file and hit explore, I see open horizons 2 v2.5 which I then have to open to see the data folder. I have been using winzip to extract my files. I tried 7zip and the program won't work. I am using windows 8.1 See my latest mod order in the post directly above this.

I dont think there is a mods folder in the OH2.5 folder. I think it is wording the mod different in the in the game. For some reason I dont understand whats going on... Hopefully someone will chime in and help :salute:

That's the link for the DL. I DL'd OHIIv2.5.7.zip a few weeks ago and it contained 4 folders:
OPEN HORIZONS II v2.5
MQK ShapeTextures_NO
MQK LocationMaps_IO
MQK Gradient_IO
The first folder contains Data and Documents folders and the others only Data folders. These are all separate MODS that need to be activated with JSGME by placing any or all in the MODS folder. The first one is really the one you want, others being optional.

What you have is your enabled mods is OHIIv2.5 which is wrong.
This is the name of the zip file and not the mod.
When you unzip the mod you should see 4 folders.
Folder 4 is the main mod and it should appear in JSGME disabled as
OPEN HORIZONS II v2.5
When you right click and explore you should see the Data Folder and a Document Folder
If you have a look at World Devastor's mod list on Post #66 you will see the difference between your OHII and his.

I have all those 4 folders and I have them installed in the same order that sober does. Maybe I have to go through each of those folders and move around the data files? idk lol. I just woke up. Also what is this starshells bug?

I would leave it out since you are using DynEnviro like us, but that's my opinion

Ok, Here is my new revised list. I have gone in and made sure that when I right click and hit explore the first thing I see is the data folder. Please look this over again and make sure everything looks like it should. In regards to the hurricane sub mod that's part of dyn env, do I still want to use sobers waves mod or do I just use the hurricane sub mod? I'm asking because I havn't come across anyone who uses it. Everyone seems to use the gale sub mod. Anyways here's my fixed list.

The 'Hurricane' mod is for high end computers that is why you see 'Gale' being used.
'Gale' is still a very good mod and will raise the wave height so if you are on the bridge you will also hear the sounds that go with it.
'Sobers Wave Mod' can be enabled at any time , but if you are going to use a Dyn Env one I cannot see the point as this will stop something working in Dyn Env.
So the answer to your question is yes you can use it with Dyn Env.
'Gale' and 'Hurricane' and 'Breeze' all come under the heading of 'Wave Mechanics.'
Just remember that Dyn Env is a complete 'Environmental Weather' package with compatible additions.
There are some very good 'Readme' documents that come with this mod

Well I have my game up and running and so far everything is really smooth. I just wanted to come and say thank you to everyone on these forums. I would like to thank everyone for giving me all this great advice. THEBERBSTER, you deserve a damn medal or something! Thanks for the great guides that you have compiled. Without them I would be so lost.
I want to thank sober for posting your awsome modlist and all your documentation. Defiance, and World_Devastator, thanks for your help. The whole damn subsim site should be given a award. Thanks to everyone who has made mods for this game and all you who have tested it. Again thank you.

Another question although a bit off topic. I recently heard about the movie das boot. Shocking I know lol. I would love to watch this movie but I ran into a problem. I can't find it with English subtitles. I can find it with subtitles in every language except English. Does anybody know where I can stream this video so I can understand it or do I need to buy a physical copy of the movie?
If you want subtitles, just Google "Das Boot subtitles". You'll find what you need.
Problem with the subflags was i had ctd's from a fresh career (actually on initial save after docking in kiel after baltic operations) , as i was already at sea i tried bunker install later on, worked fine .......
I installed on a bunker save, i think it was sometime after east british coast (in oh 2.5) , thinking back i assume it was after i got rebased and wasn't to see kiel again :)
I am about to add my flags back, i need a merchant or two to finish the eastern british coast, so i'm rebased when i get back, so flags-r-us again lol
I got all the way to south western (2nd after scapa flow i think) with my flags on previously, before dying and adding/messing with mods and starting another career

I was going to ask you this a while back because I noticed you had the flags in your mod list. I had a pang of jealousy since I love those flags and can't use them without CTD. So are you saying it can actually work if you enable them after a couple of missions once you move away from Kiel? :hmmm:

Heya,
I found no problem with them after say getting rebased to wilhelmshaven .............................
I have actually started a fresh career with them installed
Finally got the pc back to health after severe overclocking instability (my fault lol) :D so i can rule out oc'ing as a ctd cause now, but i have just had a ctd after sinking most of the sitting ducks in danzig bay
I have just checked whocrashed, and it looks like the ctd was caused by a mod (never had Dbgview enabled did i grrrrrrrrr)
But i think it's the flags for a guess, also, pinner2010 uses his before FX update, and he didn't get a crash while doing baltic missions (well i don't think he did)
So conclusion is for me, after initial mission/s they're good to go when installed after FXU and Equip upgrades, or before both of these
But interestingly, the dates and certain items both equip upgrades and sub flags sgre are not the same, only on 2 sub variants though, so i'll look into sorting those items and see how it goes
I think i have cured my ati driver error too (watch, i bet i've spoke too soon hehe) so deffo pointing to the conclusions above, just gotta rule them out one by one

This was already resolved. The only way to get it with english subtitles is to have a netflix sub or give my email address to shady websites. Other then that it is virtually impossible to find it in english. Trust me, I googled the hell out of it for 5 hours.
