When i click on the celestial navigation icon i am given a weather report, just the same as if i click on the weather icon to the left of it. My position is not reported.
When i click on the dead reckoning icon, the fix i am given is around 80 km away from my true position.
Any ideas on whats wrong?
Thanks,
Keith.
Edit: ok, i found a topic by someone who has the same celestial navigation question as me, but why is the dead reckoning WAY off?

Dead reckoning is just what it says , a reckoning calculated quickly to give a rough guide as to where you are . Its not precise otherwise you might as well use the vanilla plotting . There is nothing wrong with real navigation , it works exactly as intended .

It is supposed to be way off, it's an inaccurate report. Everything is working as intendedl

When i click on the celestial navigation icon now, all i get is: "Unable to calculate current position due to submerging". I'm on the surface though:/\\!!

It happens when you are sailing in high seas - the waves overflow some parts of the deck, hence you get "submerged" icon in the upper right, and the "Unable to calculate ..." message.
As a side note, getting a celestial fix in storm is almost impossible, but in game you can't do it in not that high sea states, but wit perfect visibilty (and I assume one would take the measurments from the conning tower, not from the deck). So to get a celestial fix right now you need pretty calm weather and uninterrupted by waves sailing, for about 30 minutes. Other than that you can get even a few days (with but luck) od dead reconning.
For those having issues with Celestial navigation and dead reconing, read up as best you can about them. Celestial requires the boat to be pretty still, and skies clear. There was no GPS up until around the early 90s, so this is what the real captains had to deal with. U-boats were not very steady in rough seas, and clouds obscure those things you use to determine your position. Deadreconning is a rough estimate of location based on time and speed of the boat. It is for these things that boats found themselves off course. If you watch Das Boot during the storm the navigator is stating that due to the storm that figuring actual position is impossible. Too hard to compute. That is why the captain backs off his tyrade about nearly bumping into Thomson in the middle of the Atlantic. We are now getting a feel of what the crew of U-96 and every other sea vessels' crew went through during storms.
