Canvas Knights WW1 Game

WEIRD! On November 9, 1918, two days before the Armistice at a tiny American airstrip near Verdun, three U.S. pilots sat playing cards. Suddenly they heard a sputtering engine and watched in amazement as a German Fokker D-VII drops out of the low gray clouds and lands. The three American airmen there, Capt. Alex H. McLanahan, Lt. Edward P. Curtis, and Lt. Sumner Sewall, rushed out with pistols drawn and captured the German pilot, Lt. Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnay, before he could burn the airplane. Lt. Heinz claimed that he was suffering engine trouble and had landed by mistake. The mood of the captured pilot seemed one of hopelessness about the war, possibly because his brother, a German ace, had died of wounds only a few days earlier. Oliver had been in Dragoon Regiment 4 and had "4-D" marked on his aircraft. Heinz had ridden with Ulan Regiment 10 and had "U10" on the side of the now captured Fokker DVII. The Fokker had been manufactured a few months earlier in the Albatros plant at Schneidemuhl. The Americans invited the German pilot in for a collegial shot of cognac before sending him off to be processed as a prisoner. After the war Heinz became an important figure in the Luftwaffe but was captured again in WW-II. Unfortunately this time it was by the Soviets and Heinz died in a Russian concentration camp. As for the aircraft, the "kicking mule' insignia of the U.S. 95th Aero Squadron was painted on the aircraft after its capture. The Fokker D-VII was eventually boxed up and sent to America. And now resides in the Smithsonian Institution. Yes some of the Jasta 18 D7's and all of the Alb D5's did have lozenge camouflage on the wing panels undersides, this one how ever was one of the ones that did not, I looked into it very deep and consulted with the one that is on the profile that I used as Mr. Pearson is a very good friend of me.

Some people have been asking on other sites if breaking its back is the way the Zeppelin dies, so I just want to show all that it can die in a few ways.

Them photos above are of total destruction and is just one of the many configurations that can happen with the damage model it can also die like this below and even other ways / configurations like the tail fins are setup as wings so they will have a impact on the flight model and if they are sent to full destruction will also bring down the Zeppelin, but 7 out of 10 times it will break its back as the fuel cell is not hard to miss and when it goes to full destruction you will see what the photos above are showing.

There will be a fix coming for the fuel consumption, its already done so it will be up for download in a day or two, but have a look here this is a new Europe map I am making it is a very BIG map takes in all you see within the yellow boards the red dot is the Zeppelin base start point the pink dots are the places that where bombed by Zeppelins as you can see I am well pass them and more then half way across Great Britain at 50 percent fuel used with the new fix for the fuel consumption.

I been working on this Europe map off and on for the pass 3 months.

^ Yes... L 19 and the 'King Stephen'. Not an incident to boast about :shifty:

It is said [sic] that the Captain of the 'King Stephen' was afraid to take all those enemies aboard, for fear of losing his ship. Back in port 'it is said' he immediately alarmed the authorities and (it is said that) some Navy ships put out to sea and looked for the survivors, but this was of course too late (if it happened..)
It is also said that the captain regretted what he had done .. but for whatever cause, the whole crew of the L 19 perished.
The incident became known to Germany because of a drift bottle, put to sea by one of the L 30's Crew. It was of course used for german propaganda ..

On the other hand, Entente propagada had painted the usual picture of the dastardly hun, crucifying canadian soldiers, bayonnetting belgien babies, and german airships were the 'baby killers', on the big Propaganda posters.
The fear of those murderous german madmen painted by propaganda, has sure 'helped' the captain in his decision.


The truth was a bit different. Zeppelins of Course DID bomb England's ground including London, but:
"... when it comes to the business of making munitions in London, no hand could be spared, for from the spring of 1915 London had begun to transform itself into one of the greatest killing machines in human history." (Jerry White, Zeppelin nights - London in the First World War, 2014, p. 92)


A bit OT:
Regarding the U-boat war Germany indeed never really led an unrestricted U-boat war (and i can prove that), and mostly (very few exceptions) used the prize regulation against neutral shipping, and merchantmen. Military troop transports though, were a completely other thing..
British propaganda certainly painted another picture, as did everyone in the war when it came to the enemy's bedeviling..

A lot of british seamen from sunk fishing boats were towed to the next coast by the very U-boat that sank them, some of the crews saw their enemies 2-3 times, and were towed to the coast as often. By order of the british authorities they were not allowed to speak about it, with draconian threats and even death penalty, it would have undermined the Propaganda effort and was thus rated as treason (speaking the truth is often rated as such..)
But I mention this to explain why the captain of the 'King Stephen' probably did, what he did.

B.t.w. the L 30 mentioned in this thread was never shot down, and survived the war. A lot of ist vital parts were sent to Brussels after the war, and can be visited in Brussel's Aviation Museum.

The next morning a British fishing vessel, The King Stephen sighted the L 19's distress signals. When the captain and crew arrived, they found Germans aboard the sinking ship: the captain refused to rescue them and left them to die. As the weather worsened, Zeppelin crewmembers wrote personal messages and an account of what had happened before placing the notes in several bottles and tossing them into the roiling sea. When the Royal Navy made a search of the area, no airship or crew were found. "I went towards the lights and discovered a huge mass of wreckage on the water," he told a Times correspondent. "I stood by and at daybreak found the wreckage was that of a large German airship bearing the identification mark L-19. The cabins were under water and so was a large part of the envelope, but a large portion was still above.
"On a raised platform on top of the envelope were seven or eight members of the crew, who hailed us in broken English saying: "Save us, save us! We will give you plenty of money'. An officer offered gold, but as he did so, 20 crew appeared."
The skipper of the unarmed trawler felt it would be unwise to take the Zeppelin's men aboard, as they outnumbered his own crew, so he went off and reported the incident to a British naval vessel. As he sailed away the Germans were shouting "Gott strafe England!" but a gale then got up and the airship probably foundered.'" The King Stephen never again sailed as a fishing vessel. After her return, she was taken over by the Royal Navy for use as a Q-ship (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-ship), under the command of Lieutenant Tom Phillips RNR (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy_Reserve). She was sunk 12 weeks later, on the 25 April 1916. Phillips was charged with war crimes upon reaching Germany. However, the charges were dropped and he and his crew were treated as normal prisoners-of-war after a photograph of William Martin was published in a British newspaper and the Germans realized they held another man. William Martin himself died of heart-failure in Grimsby, slightly over a year after encountering the L 19, on the 24 February 1917. He had received a large numbers of letters, including both letters of support and, reportedly, hate-mail and death-threats. LT Odo Loewe's last message in a bottle found six months later:
"With fifteen men on the top platform and backbone girder of the L 19, floating without gondolas in approximately 3 degrees East longitude, I am attempting to send a last report. Engine trouble three times repeated, a light wind on the return journey delayed our return and, in the mist, carried us over Holland where I was received with heavy rifle fire; the ship became heavy and simultaneously three engines broke down. 2 February 1916, towards one o'clock, will apparently be our last hour. The mooring mast is from the 30's, I used the one I did for my Hindenburg for the mother game engine of CK be it VSF back in 2012, I also use many other parts as well for the WW1 Zeppelin.

Yes the island map is a none WW1 map it was made for quick online dogfights much like the one that was in red baron 3D so I looked for a good place in the world that was removed from the WW1 conflict to make the island map as this game has to use real world data for any map made for it and the middle of Cuba work out just fine for it with some trimming.

Hi Aktungbby, The Red SE5-A is a real paint scheme of WW1, it was a Australian home base training SQ CO's plane here is a black and white and the same shot colorized, the loco people gave the plane its name "The Red Devil"

The Europe map!

Its every thing in that large white square!
This map is 1,864 miles wide and 3,462 miles high that is a total of 6,453,211.41 square miles big!, we know that about two thirds of it is water but that still levees us with about 2 million square miles of land... and that to me is enugph for anyone to get lost on...lol

Now let me explain how this map works, we call it a ( collective Europe map ) when this map is put into your game scenery folder and you go into game and choose it, it will then plug in all other scenery's you may have for that part of the world, then you can click on a scenery and get the start points for that scenery and go into game.

In my photo I have the Northern_Italy and a island off of France Ouessant, if I was to start on the Northern_Italy and fly to Ouessant when I levee the Northern_Italy scenery and I dont have any other scenery's from there to Ouessant the Europe map will then kick in and give me the correct topographic land / sea till I get to the Ouessant island and then that scenery will show, that's how it works.

The Europe map is all working fine and I am in the process of making a few scenery's for this that will also be put out at release of the Europe map that I will make the Zeppelin and Gotha raid missions on Great Britain with, we will be looking at release around mid summer 2016.

We will also start having in 2016 ( The CK Fun Days ) where we will announce days and times that we will all meet for some online fun with the Canvas Knights game.

It may have just been a typo, but in case it isn't I thought I should point out that you have it written as A1, with a number. Morane-Saulnier used all-letter designations during the Great War, and that particular plane was called A-I.

Possibly. The MoS numbers were the official military designations, whereas the letter codes were Morane-Saulnier's in-house names. The planes seem to have been most commonly known by the letter codes.

I think you are very right Sailor Steve, when I put out the MS AI in a few weeks you will see the rudder numbers as MS 29 but the plane being called MS AI.

NICE! in the old Red Baron game, I always felt indestructible in a D.VII:up: The Allies agreed: "The Armistice (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armistice_with_Germany_(Compi%C3%A8gne)) ending the war specifically required Germany to surrender all D.VIIs to the Allies." :salute:




So long as a strong man fully armed guards his own home, his goods are undisturbed; but when someone stronger than himself attacks and defeats him, the stronger man takes away all the weapons he relied on and shares out his spoil. /Luke 11, 21-22/.

These words of the Gospel of Luke describe perfectly the terms imposed on the defeated Germany by the victorious Entente Powers. Clause four of the Armistice Terms signed on November 11, 1918 ordered the immediate demobilization of the air force and handing over 2000 (1700) aircraft, particularly the Fokker D.VII fighters. The Fokker D.VII was the only aircraft mentioned by its name. Why was that? Why was this type of plane so important to those dictating the terms of the armistice? The answer is both simple and obvious. Performance of the Fokker D.VII was superior to any aircraft used by the victorious powers. It was an aircraft that would highly influence designs of numerous inter-war fighter planes. While delighted with its maneuverability, he found it a little unstable, especially in a dive. To improve stability, Fokker lengthened the fuselage and added a vertical rudder fin, among other changes. The result was easy to fly, maneuverable, and safe. The Red Baron endorsed it wholeheartedly. The Adlershof trials showed Fokker at his best, quickly modifying the plane to meet requirements, charming the German aces, and (most importantly) delivering a fighter that offered good, all-around performance. Manfred von Richthofen, a great influence on German fighter plane development, looked forward anxiously to the D VII: April 2, 1918: "When can I expect to receive the [new] Fokker biplanes with the high compression engines? The superiority of British single-seat and reconnaissance aircraft makes it even more perceptibly unpleasant here. Their single-seaters fight by coming over at high altitudes and staying there. We cannot even shoot at them. Speed is the most important factor. We could shoot down five to ten times as many if we were faster. ... Please give me news soon about when we can count on the new machines."
Of course, Richthofen never flew the new machine, as he was killed on April 21st. Brother Lothar,https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/81/Richthofenlothar.jpg/220px-Richthofenlothar.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Richthofenlothar.jpg) understandbly overshadowed by his brother, the Red Knight of Germany, also wounded at the time of Manfred's death returned to combat in command of Jasta 11 in a Fokker D.VII July 1918 and added 10 victories to his score while being shot down three more times: antiaircraft fire and twice by those nasty Sopwith Camels. Considering the fate that befell the Red Baron, his description of his brother's severe hip wounding in his autobiography is disturbingly prescient: After such a struggle, especially at a low altitude, in the course of which one has so often been twisting and turning, and circling to the right and to the left, the average mortal has no longer the slightest notion of his position. On that day it happened that the air was somewhat misty. The weather was particularly unfavorable. My brother quickly took his bearings and discovered only then that he was a long distance behind the front. He was behind the ridge of Vimy. The top of that hill is about three hundred feet higher than the country around. My brother, so the observers on the ground reported, had disappeared behind the Vimy height.
It is not a particularly pleasant feeling to fly home over enemy country. One is shot at and cannot shoot back. It is true, however, that a hit is rare.
My brother [Lothar] approached the line. At a low altitude one can hear every shot that is fired, and firing sounds then very much like the noise made by chestnuts which are being roasted. Suddenly, he felt that he had been hit. That was queer to him.... There is not a doubt, given Lothar's rashness in combat, that the Fokker D.VII enabled him to survive WWI combat. Considering the amount of time Lothar von Richthofen spent on the front and in hospitals, he was one of the most combat efficient and prolific flying aces of the war, perhaps even more so than his brother Manfred. Of his total of 40 confirmed victories, Lothar scored 33 in just three months: 15 in April 1917, 8 in May 1917, and 10 in August 1918.

The instruments are now in and working.

The pilots are now in and the guns and rocker arms are now working with animations.

The hit boxes are done and the game just takes all the parts and throws them everywhere
till I get the damage CFG done to govern the game engine on what to do with the parts.

Don't sweat the mirror too much; this BBY was a sitting-duck when attacked from below-the upper wing blocked the pilot's downward visibility. Albert Ball's first kill!

Hi Aktungbby, my only mistake was it should say ( Roland C2a ) and it will when it is put up for download, now I will explain...

There was 2 variants of the Roland a C2 and a C2a.
The C2 had a steering wheel and no front gun and the top part was more rounded and had a rear-view mirror on more then 50% of all photos I looked at, see photo;

The C2a had a control stick and a front gun and the top part was more squared off and in more then 50% of the photos I looked at it did not have a rear-view mirror, see photo;

So that is why you see my model of the Roland C2a without a rear-view mirror.

WELL ok...I'll swap the mirror for a little better camo though!:hmph: and curtains on the windows-painted on! EDIT Late in 1916 the C.II was used for night bombing with four 27.6 lb (12.5 kg) bombs beneath the fuselage.

I do but mainly for the fun of playing with the many, many, models it offers. If you're looking for a hard core simulator experience you will have to spend the bucks on ROF and pay for every new vehicle that is offered that will have you ending up paying hundreds, but if that level of "realism" is not required, this game/simulation is quite fun. I really enjoy getting to pilot Zeppelins, tanks, torpaedo boats, seaplanes, float planes, and other WW1 aircraft I barely heard of before plus the large offering of historic skins to go with them. And soon, there will be a very large map allowing Zeppelin raids on London to be flown.
