I've returned to SH3 after some time with SH5. As we know, SH5 graphics are great but SH3 game-play is better.

One major improvement to SH3 would be to hide the simplified, unrealistic, animated crew. (No disrespect, but the figures really distract from the game and make it look childish). That is, delete the crew, or eliminate them, or make them invisible.

Viewing an empty boat would not be so bad; the high quality interior details would not be marred by the existence of the less-than-lifelike figures. The best flight simulators, for example, don't have animated figures sat next to you when flying a commercial jet.

I attempted to make the crew invisible by creating transparent textures which resulted in pure black animated models. The development came to a halt because I didn't know how to hide the animated models without ruining key features of the game.

Can anyone suggest a method of making the crew invisible or eliminating them from the game (without causing problems, of course)?

Hi,

I guess the easiest way would be to use Silent 3ditor to move the corresponding nodes to somewhere outside your view.

use S3D to turn off visible.
Here I only did body01.dat

Was a bit weird with the floating heads.
:haha:

Do both bodies and anything else in the crew folder and you should get what you want. Check ALL nodes for the visible check and uncheck them.

Can you say 'Ghosts?'

Thank you LGN1, privateer and others. Silent 3ditor looks useful in this respect. I will try it out in a month or two when we've managed to find a house to move into (PC and furniture have been in store since November; this is written on a kobo).

I will make and test the changes and report back.

If I get some more free time I'll whack the files for you.
It is easy given I know the files and settings.
I'm tired of those Guys stareing at me!

Invisible crew works well in SH3. The absence of the animated figures in the con (F2) improves the overall quality of the game and they are not missed on the bridge (F4) either. However, external views (.) of the boats without a cluster of men on the bridge is unrealistic but, on balance, I prefer this modification of the game without the characters.

A reminder how to do it:
Download and install S3ditor (thread is here - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=119571&highlight=s3ditor). Open each .dat file in the /data/crew folder. Click on each node and uncheck the 'visible' box. Make sure you find every node related to each file - some files have more than one node. IIRC there are 15 or more to find. Also, uncheck the 'visible' box in the data/library/Binocular01.dat file.

Thanks again guys.
