I'm curious as to if anyone else is experiencing an excess of dud torpedoes. I'm currently attempting to finish up British Coastal Waters. Just attempted to take out two tankers and all four torpedoes i launched (two each) were duds...all back to back. The last mission i I had a 50% failure rate on the torpedoes. These are the steam ones, not the electric ones.

At the begining of this mission i even spent extra poitns to improve maintenance which is supposed to reduce dud torpedoes.

Getting beyond annoyed with trucking across the North Sea, sneaking into a harbor, and then taking out only 1 ship because i have a 50%+ torpedo failure rate.

For what its worth, I did some reading and it looks like (in reality) there was some serious quality control issues with early German torpedoes. Especially in regards to the magnetic influence detonators. Does anyone if those realities have been accurately modeled into the game or TDWs patcher?

My torpedo patches work with the torpedoes.sim file. Whatever is in it is what you'll see/experience. Open those files up with Goblin and you'll see that the failure rates are set high in the early years.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll have to start using impact detonators instead of the magnetic influence.

From what I've heard, you can have a better chance of success if the torpedoes hit the hull at a 90 degree angle... That's how I usually set up my attack, but I don't play with duds. However, I will try to look into this.

Don't feel bad, I haven't had one explode in 10. Very close, if not 90 degree angle attack as well.

It also helps to increase the eel maintenance capabilities of the torpedo man and the sound guy almost immediately at the start of the career; preheating eels to get a little bigger bang also helps. Premature detonations are reduced. Also critical is more emphasis on the deck gun to reduce eel usage and increase overall tonnage results. 1/3 of kills should be with the gun and to finish off cripples with only one eel expended per vessel. Convoys are a necessary evil but single vessels are preferred and safer. Donitz actually had to copy a captured British torpedo to give his Ubootwaffe something reliable to shoot as per Black May...so much for technology!
