With permissions from all needed being granted?
I'm takeing the lifeboats and debris mods and blending them into a single mod.

So version 4 of Lifeboats&debris gets mixed with IABL's Wooden boats and more.

Adjustments include:
My SH4 wooden boat along with Targor Avelany's SH5 wooden boat optimized for SH3/4,
Animations adjustments/additions to get a greater eye candy thing going on,
Whatever else I have handy to throw in.
:haha:

Any questions?
:hmmm:

Good. I thought not.

Not sure about cross compatibility with other major mods at this time.
LB&D works by adding to the .val files of each Unit.
So things like IABL's MFM and newer Units may be missing critical info.
I'm looking into doing a script for 010 to scan and add the needed stuff 1st.
Then maybe I'll do a stand alone program for others to use.

First goal is to get the wooden boats working with LB&D version 4.
I'm almost finished re-working Targor's SH5 boat.

Nice work, Jeff

It would also be very nice to have very primitive wooden rafts. In one of Buchheim's books there are quite a few photos of really primitive rafts (basically a few wooden pallets tied together). It's written there that those rafts were just put on the deck and were popular in case the ship sunk very fast.

Something like this?
It's only 340 faces so has very lttle impact compared to the wooden boats.

Did you ever try later versions?
I'd like to know if there were conflicts, ctd's, etc.
I can scan for ID problems in a limited way to try to make it work wwith all major mods.

I've also looked at the val changes and can write a program to do changes on any Ship Unit by scanning the Sea folder.

Very nice work, Jeff!

You might also make a larger one by taking four of them together and then two layers of this (8 pellets in total).

Here are some pictures of another kind of raft that seems to have been used quite often:

I started one like Poon-Lim survived on. I found several more images of the same type raft so it was kind of common and that will allow me to scale it fairly well.

I took a few liberties on the 55 gal drums.

I am getting excited...this is almost as good as when lifeboats/rafts were first announced several years ago.

Will there also be Carley Rafts? Everyone's probably seen those donut-shaped rafts that they strapped to the sides of warship turrets...they were also popular during the war...

http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d54/iambecomelife/liferaft.jpg~original

It would also be interesting if the survivors could be triggered to fire a flare gun or toss a smoke pot....not to overwhelm you; do whatever you can!

Madox58
03-07-14, 07:18 PM
I'm thinking about the Carley Rafts.
All the netting may cause file size problems I'd like to avoid.
I do have an idea on that though.

Also thinking about some kind of lights at night maybe.

Now I've come across something interesting about the wooden rafts.
England built over 300 Chipchase Life Rafts.
http://www.nemaritimetrust.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/chipchase_liferaft.jpg
http://www.britishpathe.com/video/life-raft-demonstration/query/01141400

They were built with both the top and bottom the same it seems.
That way no matter how it hit the water you were good to go.

So I looked close at the images of the raft I am working on now.
Photo's I have seem to show 8 drums total with 4 on each side stacked for the flip in an H type pattern.

Anyone have better info or guesses?
:hmmm:

Hello, some thoughts:

-- the SH4 model of the Carley floats coming with the original lifeboat mod isn't that bad besides of not having the grid bottom (oh well, there were several types of that ... :hmmm: ); adding that would be a great improvement and may not add too many faces
-- netting can be done with little faces, just with texture (I guess that is what are thinking of anyway)
-- the wooden lifeboats look great; is it possible to give them a rudder (not a working one, just a 3D model)?
-- here are images of Chipchase rafts I found in the net:

I was about to suggest a texture for the netting myself...an alpha channel maybe for the transparent parts. Also some Carleys came with a wooden floor, not netting, which would be easy to simulate with few polys.

As an aside, the wooden-floored variant was not as successful because the wood often broke loose when the raft was thrown in the water...when the "Indianapolis" sank in 1945, many survivors had to cling to the sides of their rafts for days bc of this problem.

Nice pic...afraid I've never heard of the Chip Chase rafts so I don't know how their drums were arranged.

I ment the wooden ones you posted links to.

I figure there's no need to worry about that anyway as the rafts always fall right side up in Game.
:D

The ChipChase would be nice if we controlled what is released by Country/? maybe?
:hmmm:

@the_frog,

The SH4 ones are OK but I'll update those also. They are more low poly then I like.
With better systems and such? Polys are a gold mine.
:haha:

I'm also holding off on Targors boat until I hear from him about getting his original obj files.

Tested IABL's Wooden boats with my SH4 boat today.
Real nice! Of course adjustments need made but quite happy so far.
:D

Oh. Targor is sending his original files for his boat also.
The GR2 export is just not SH3/4 worthy and would take to much work to adjust.
It would also not highlite his 3D modeling work.

Got it. Replied.
:)

On the subject of Nationality of survivors you brought up.
(And I mentioned about the Chipchase rafts)
It can be done with instancing in the main .dat file of the newer version.
Then we add to the val files of each unit what nationality it calls.

Doing it all by hand is crazy. I've already started a program that will scan any unit in the Sea folder and make adjustments. I could add a roster scan that applies the proper settings to use a Nationality setting if it's the only Nation that uses that Unit.

WIP of a new survivor model, which is only twice the polys as the original SH3 human figures. The body actually has fewer polys than the existing figures but looks better and is easier to texture...most of the poly increase comes from the head (a SH4 crewmember):

Got the original meshes from Targor for his Wooden boat.

The exports from GR2 files take to much work to fix to SH3/4 meshes.
I'm home from the 5 weeks in California but that means I have to spend time working on the next job.

Along with the required attention to SWMBO?

New rigs for the animations are nearly done after a major crash and loss of files.

Nice thing is that I'm much better at getting things setup and working again.

I've also written or modded scripts to improve the work flow.

I'm not real happy with all the work needed when importing with S3D and may code something for 010 to handle all the timing.

The Meshes are direct exports from SH4 and roughly 4 or 5 times larger then the old Mod.

I'm going to hook you all up with a fun little tool for doing custom heads.
It's free and that is right in my price range.
:D
http://www.looxis.de/looxis-faceworx-tool

It does run on my Win 7 64 system but I can't save then reload the .fwx project files. So it's a get it all done first time or start over deal.
I'll try it on my old XP system and see if that helps.
Other then that little glitch it's a fantastic tool for heads once you blend it with other tools and re-scale the exported obj file.

You don't need my permission Mate.
Anything I get done here is for the SubSim Community to do as they please with.
I wish I had time to work on stuff but real life business is taking all my time.
I don't work a 9 to 5 with weekends off.
I work when needed. That means I've not had a day off since May 16th!
And most of my days are 10 to 12 hours long. 10 hours away from home.
:nope:

I do get a few hours to work on animations here and there but not as much as I'd really like.
Mostly I want to finish ripping animations from SH4. If I can take them? I can put new ones back.
SH3 animations are simple and I've posted tons of info on that subject.
Enuff that anyone wanting to can do them.

LGN1

Thanks for the update!

Are there any news about the rafts (what we have discussed on page 2 of this thread)? I think such rafts are really missing from SH3 and even without any animations would be a great addition.

Unfortunately, I lack the 3-d modelling skills to create them myself
