Hello,

I did a model of the Polish Grom class destroyers.

The basic model is that of the Blyskawica after re-fitting in 1941; however, early equipment is included.

Known issue:
Camouflage schemes are made using best estimates of colours of the respective time. So, late schemes tend to be largely greenish. I am aware, internet photographs of Blyskawica as a museum often sport plenty of blue. This is especially striking with photographs showing her in a 1941 Western Approaches Scheme. However, those schemes used off white as the base tone but not baby blue ...

Hi the_frog,

wonderfull model, however (=wie immer :D). I can see a 286 radar on top of the mast and another 285 radar on top of the rangefinder. Were these destroyers equipped with such radars?

Greetings

@sailorX:

Well, there were also just two Nelsons, two Bismarcks, two xxx ...

@Leitender:

As stated, the base model is the end-1941 configuration. During the refit, Blyskawica's original rangefinder/director was replaced by a British high-angle director, equiped with a 285 gunnery radar; also a sea-/air-warning radar was added. However, I couldn't find any reference to a specific instrument but the most common device at that time was the 286 ...

I just wanted to say that spawn probability of this class DD should be really low..

Hi the_frog,

thanks for your answer. I found a model kit site, where the ORP Blyskawica is shown in late war (1943-1944) condition. It shows the 285 6 Yagi Antenna fire control radar on the bridge, a 290/291 radar antenna on top of the mast and probably a 271 radar at the stern. Please take a look:

Maybe the 290/291 Radar replaced an older one...

Fantastic work the_frog, especially for Polish players like me :salute:

ORP Grom (H 71) was sinked in Narvik by German bombers He 111 during campaign in Norway, but ORP Błyskawica (H 34) happily survived the war and is a museum-ship now in Gdynia. I strongly recommend you visit this destroyer during your trip to Poland.

@leitender:
The 290/291 array was introduced in late 1941, so it could be the Blyskawica received it right during the 1941 refit :hmmm:

@jaxa:
All textures representing post-1940 colour patterns do have only the H34 pennant painted on :03:

I visited Blyskawica several years ago (2006 or so). At that time, I had no camera with me, and also no idea of ever doing a 3D model of her ...

I couldn´t find original pictures of the Blyskawica with radar antennas fitted. Maybe they have been removed from the pictures. Today it still/again has the 290/291 aerial.

In 2006 you wrote a really excellent article about german radars and radar warning receivers. I use it widely as a source:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//showthread.php?t=94024

In the meantime, i found a great internet site from a polish expert about the radar equipment aboard german uboats. It´s really worth to take a look on it:

the_frog: IMHO that's not a big mistake to use only H34 skin for Grom class destroyers, because ORP Grom was sunk very quickly, in April 1940, and wasn't use in many actions during WWII. ORP Błyskawica was a really workhorse for Polish Navy during war, in Battle of Atlantic and other actions like Operation Torch, Overlord or battle of Ushant.
Word about radars of Błyskawica - originally it wasn't equipped with any radars. During war Błyskawica received these radars:
1. type 281 - between December 1940 and February 1941;
2. type 285 and type 291 (instead of type 281) - June 1941;
3. type 293 - February 1945.
If we are talking about skin for Błyskawica, from second half of 1941 it was Admiralty Light Disruptive camouflage, from 1942 Admiralty Dark Disruptive and from May 1944 Admiralty Light Disruptive for JKN destroyers.

Leitender: thanks for your kind words, I wrote this article especially for SH3 players, because there wasn't any infos about this equipment in manual.

Very good. As none of those radars is included in the game, my suggestion for a similar radar equipment in the .sns file is the following:

19401201-19410630: Type 286 (meter wavelength, fits to the used antenna)

19410630-19450201: type 290 (10cm wavelength)

19450201-19451231: type 277 (10cm wavelength with widest range)

@leitender: the radar equipment in the *.sns is that of the British escorts in SH3; it's historically not correct.

@WTCC: there are nice models of the late-war Flowers converted from SH4/5. The model of the Blacks Swans is one better SH3 models. Town class destroyers are not in the original SH3, only in GWX. I consider doing a model but not so soon; I have other plans.

@JapLance: some progess with the E class?

Hi the_frog,
I integrated jaxa´s information into the sns-file (http://www.mediafire.com/download/vbs702vivxwb3o9/NDD_Grom.sns). Please feel free to use it for your Grom mod :up:

Hallo Leitender,

just saw your post. Thanks for the file. I am going to use it, and whoever likes it may use it, too :woot:

Hi Leitender,

thanks a lot for the link :up: I have found some information there for which I was looking for a long time, i.e., the heating time for the G7e torpedo.

For quite some time now I have two speed/range settings for the electric torpedoes in order to simulate preheated and cold batteries. However, my problem always was that I did not know how long it took to heat the batteries and thus, when to use which setting. Now I have a new house rule: Only after being in contact for more than 4h I will use the preheated setting :yep:

The_Frog: I´m sorry for continuing that off-topic chat...

Hi LGN1,

I´m glad that you´ve found some news on that really loving site. Concerning the heating time I remember two ranges: about 3.000m unheated and up to 5.000m when the torpedo was heated (TII). My own idea was to use the SH3 Commander to set the range randomly between 3 und 5km, because getting contacts is random controlled too, so one cannot prepare for it. But I´ve never implemented that idea.

Your solution is really... hardcore! I´m sure I wouldn´t have the discipline to wait for 4 hours to get a hot torpedo... :D That´s for ironman simmers, really! Geil!

Btw manos included a small fix in his MaGui mod for the torpedo speed. 2 speed settings were corrected. Have you noticed that? Otherwise I can send you a Torpedo.sim file where I have included all that information I´ve found here and elsewhere.

Greetings from Leitender :salute:

Hi Leitender,

I use two settings for the TII and TIII torpedo in torpedo.sim:

TII(cold, speed setting 1): 28kn/3000m
TII(heated, speed setting 2): 30kn/5000m

TIII(cold, speed setting 1): 28kn/4500m
TIII(heated, speed setting 2): 30kn/7500m

From now on I will only switch to the heated speed if I have been in contact for more than four hours.

Anyway, back to topic... (sorry, the_frog :oops:)

Cheers, LGN1
