View Full Version : johnfb's load screens [WIP]
Hi All
I am working on some graphics for various screens to upload soon and was wondering if anyone would be interested in this type of look...simple...non cluttered.
This is the startcampaign screen with a see through paper where order / instruction will be shown
Please let me know how you view this type of graphic.
Thanks in advance
John

Maybe if you showed us what it will actually look like. It's kind of hard to tell from just a description. :sunny:

I can see the screenshot just fine. I prefer the uncluttered look you are working towards. Semi transparent orders sheet is nice as you have selected an interesting background. I always find time to look at U-Boat plans.
The text on the U-Boat plan you have used is written in English. Hence I wouldn't use it.
Looks good, definite improvement.

No, I couldn't see it before. I see your repost and I agree with the others - it looks very good.

Some nice work there, Johnfb. Can't wait to see what you cook up for the crew management/damage control view (hint-hint, nudge-nudge, nod-nod, wink-wink, say no more-say no more) :D :har:

:D say no moah.....
Actually I was looking at those and it is not as straighforward as the load screens simply because when you put a lot of detail in, it can be hard to see text headings and smaller print, or the existing graphics, with clutter around them.
The barracks is a good example of that, it can be a bugger to see the screen after adding backgrounds to them.
I can see myself leaving them as is or doing something very plain so people can see icons and text when the go to them
Thanks for the kind words too
John
Last version of the load map screen.

Barracks screen
I really think too much clutter and colour etc makes it difficult to view these screens correctly...well for me anyway
So here is a simple black and white barracks in the background with a couple of happy looking fellows too...and a slight view of the u boat blue print here and there....

Looks like this in the game

Crew management screens and damage control screen
Again, I think these have to remain uncluttered and plain so as to see the icons correctly.
These screens show a camaraderie I feel...kinda like you know you could depend on the guy beside you in a crisis... and apt for the crew management and damage control screen...IMHO
Here are three I have worked on, simple crew pictures over a u boat plan:

I agree with your assessment, but that's just my personal opinion. Too dark of a background makes it difficult to see the black lettering.

Isn't a black white photo in line with the era? The ones in post #38 look particularly like an old photo. It also contains what could pass for a barracks in the background.

Yeah it does look like a barracks to me too....and I think it fits quite well also.
I tried a few backgrounds , both colour and B&W ,but most of the time the main screen disappeared into the background so not for me.
I think plain B&W works on these screens
Thanks for your views and opinions!!!!!

Nice! I like that! This seems to have a slight tint to it, like the ones in post #38, that gives them an old photo appearance (which I personally prefer), as opposed to the one in post #42, but don't get me wrong, they all look superb. :yeah:

Thanks GreyBeard, I know what you mean. I add that sepia toning to some but not all as it can get a bit old (excuse the pun) if overused.
But thanks for the input it is important ,as I try things out , to get views like this, thanks for taking the time to post your views!
Slowly coming to an end now, a few more screens to do and then I will release them to download.
Maybe I will add sepia tone to each screen going forward, and gave a separate one as "normal" so as to have a few choices to make when and if anyone decides to use them :hmmm:

What programme are you using to 'age' the photographs?
Picasa, Photoshop, Corel Paintshop Pro Photo X2?

Absolutley beautiful graphics!
The "Das Boote tone" along with the historical photos works very well, imo.
The result adds a special flavour to the overall atmosphere of the game...
I'd like very much a similar UI, well done!

I like this lot - this is one of the best versions of this screen that I've ever seen. Very balanced, with the medals keeping things interesting to the player's eye.
