CTD scenario 1:
- Game crash when playable unit or some other AI unit taking damage, especially from guns with high firing rate (AA guns, air strikes and similar)
- Commonly followed by SHcollisin.act ,particles.act CTD ...
Cause:

CTD Scenario 2:
- Game randomly CTD when AI unit is taking damage or catastrophic explosion happens when torpedo struck.
- You have FX Update 0.0.22 on board
Cause:
- "Object linked to" function in ships .zon files
Solution :
- Use this fix... FXU_0_0_22_Ship zon Files (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=4249)



Game freez/CTD scenario 3:
- Game freez when AI unit is damaged and firing red distress flare
Cause:
- ...
Solution:
- Open data/Zones.cfg with notepad (better Notepad++). Find entries
Effect2=Distress_Flare_Red, 75
and replace it with

Game freez/CTD Scenario 4:
- Game freez/CTD when you're approaching enemy convoy and you have been spotted by enemy watchmen

CTD Scenario 5:
- CTD when you enter the bunker and try to speak with flotilla commander

CTD Scenario 6:
- Famous CTD when you use "silentotto" cheat to start new campaign.
- You have recently make changes in your modlist(added new mod, reinstalled modlist), or you changed values in TheDarkWraithUserOptions.py without use of OptionsFileEditorViewer.exe
- Commonly folowed by msvcr90.dll CTD
Cause:
- ...
Solution:
- Go to data/Aplications/OptionsFileEditorViewer and start OptionsFileEditorViewer.exe, set correct path for menu.txt(data/menu/menu.txt) and correct SH5 installation path.
- Click top "open" and browse data/scripts/menu for TheDarkWraithUserOptions.py. Make one change, just in case...Save



CTD Scenario 7:
- CTD when loading new campaign or approaching port
- Commonly folowed by msvcr90.dll CTD
Cause:
- Probably mod incompatibility
Solution:
- Try to remove TDW FX Fix for Sobers chimney smoke from your modlist or...
- Try to remove AI_sub_crew_1_0_2_TheDarkWraith or...
- Try to remove SubFlags_0_0_8_byTheDarkWraith



CTD Scenario 8:
- Random CTD's at open seas, when you approaching enemy coast line or friendly bases, CTD which comes with the appearance of some units (mostly airborne) in your rendering area.
Cause:
- Unknown
Solution:
- Use game save feature smartly, at least one game save in 48 hours of simulation time without any AI units in your rendering area. Do not overwrite old game saves. Game saves/reloads (with exiting from the game completely) approx. 100-200Km from the home base at the beginning and at the and of every patrol are mandatory.



CTD Scenario 9:
- CTD when player unit is equiped with snorkel and taking damage.
- You're using Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_byTheBeast
Cause:
- "Object linked to" function in snorkel's zon files.
Solution:
- Use this fix/addon http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=4605



Lost SOAN Scenario:
- Not CTD related but commonly asked question on forum
Solution:
- Delete all ***_Draggables.TDW from game root folder and reload the game.



CTD Scenario XD:
- CTD when using high time compression...
Cause:
- Hight time commpresion
Solution:
- Don't use high time compression...:D

Is this an important note to add for clarity?

Important to know if path to be used is stock menu.txt or menu.txt from within the NewUIs with TDC mod? (All depends on what is enabled/disabled in JSGME at the time. Similar situation like sober posted about snorkel in post #3 of sobers mega mod).

I always used the [I]OptionsFileEditorViewer.exe as TDW suggested. I can not recall in my case YET if the menu.txt was the reasons for my RSD/silentotto. I will certainly keep this thread and especially menu.txt issues in mind.

Ok, we shall see later in the day. It never gave me CTDs from evidence in the event logs, but I have everything to gain from the lost time resolving this.

I will probably copy more of your modlist, vdr1981, from what you posted last at Open Horizons. One thing I do notice there, I use one or the other of these mods:
R.E.M_by_Xrundel_TheBeast_1.2 - no hyd on surface - NewUIs-IRAI compatible
R.S.D. & R.E.M. - GHG Hydrophone add-on (no hyd on surface)

Ok, we shall see later in the day. It never gave me CTDs from evidence in the event logs, but I have everything to gain from the lost time resolving this.

Dont pay attention to hydrophone addons, RSD use different file for GHG apparatus...

Seriously , you shouldn't use TC larger then 256, even if your hardware is powerful by gaming standards...Maybe on mid Atlantic but near the coast of England forget it... Also save game a lot, that can kill immersion a bit but it can help, en least 10-15 saves per patrols...Did you enabled advanced and experimental patches?

I can confirm that, you should not use over TC larger than 256. You lose some sounds associated with the command and CTD increases:yep:.

Loaded OHII v2.3 and patch 1 in the bunker then selected N.W.A. mission. I wanted to see if I could get into Stornoway. Got to the first part of the shallow waters, I wanted to load my tubes early. Clicked on the Torpedo button from the Nav Map, went to select the first tube switch and got a ctd.

By following vdr1981 advice I have reduced the CTD to zero. I now have 20 hours of playtime without any CTD. I have destroy ships with topedoes and with cannon without CTD. No CTD by using silentotto. No CTD at Kiel, Everything works without probem:rock:.

Why dont you try to place those four files into library folder again,make one change via TDW options file editor and try to reproduce CTD.
This is my current modlist , shells_rck files are not removed...

By following vdr1981 advice I have reduced the CTD to zero. I now have 20 hours of playtime without any CTD. I have destroy ships with topedoes and with cannon without CTD. No CTD by using silentotto. No CTD at Kiel, Everything works without probem:rock:.

This modlist this based of Sobers list with some changes as it lacked some mods I wanted, but gives me grief every time I play, and I cannot find the fault myself.
Really annoying as I have never got to the Mission after Coastal waters...
CTD's and other errors are always blockading progress.

CTD Scenario 2:
- Game randomly CTD when AI unit is taking damage or catastrophic explosion happens when torpedo struck.
- You have FX Update 0.0.22 on board
- Commonly followed bu Kernel.dll CTD
Cause:
- "Object linked to" function in ships .zon files

Thanks for this. I was having repeated CTD, as described above, when practicing manual targeting with historical missions. So far so good after this.

My biggest concern was with scenario #6 and silentotto. It wasn't the enabling/disabling of mods from JSGME as much as I thought. I have noticed problems occurred more from using the optionsfileviewer editor and saving. At times, seems like TheDarkWraithUserOptions.py wasn't being saved properly. I always referenced the menu.txt and SH5 root folder. Always used the optionsfileviewer application.

The windows event viewer was not reporting a problem with msvcr90.dll in my case. It could be because I removed some visual C++ versions that I saw in windows programs, too many versions. Plus sober and others have reported issues with visual C++.

Game stable with my gigantic modlist for weeks or longer for now. Not playing much anymore since I am concentrating on voices reloaded scripting more.

I have been merging some mods with their respective patches into one mod more and more. One example is, Equipment_Upgrades_Fix. This eliminates enabling/disabling JSGME issues, plus increased speed overall.

I could not find where silentmichal's interior mod 1.2.4 was being asked in your Wolves of Steel thread. It works below.

I've updated CTD Scenario 7 with AI_sub_crew_1_0_2_TheDarkWraith
.
Now why is this happening I really don't have a clue. I remember I used this mod on a regular basis but since OHII 2.3 (not necessarily that OHII cause the problems) from some reason compatibility is broken. Ironically, this mod will not overwrite any file from any other mod outhere...Strange... :hmmm:

CTD Scenario 8:
- Random CTD's at open seas, when you approaching enemy coast line or friendly bases, CTD which comes with the appearance of some units (mostly airborne) in your rendering area.
Cause:
- Unknown
Solution:
- Use game save feature smartly, at least one game save in 48 hours of simulation time without any AI units in your rendering area. Do not overwrite old game saves. Game saves/reloads (with exiting from the game completely) approx. 100-200Km from the home base at the beginning and at the and of every patrol are mandatory.



Added CTD scenario 8...Not a solution in a real sense of the word but this will drastically reduce this kind of CTD's...

FXU_0_0_22_No Starshells (.eqp Files)I can't seem to find it anywhere except in Wolves of Steel, and I'd prefer not to use that modpack.

EDIT: I'm getting a random CTD every time I try to play. I'll be sailing in open water, and then it crashes. I'm assuming because some AI unit has rendered. I'm just on the first mission of OHII, and this is really annoying me. I've been messing with my modlist for the last hour, and have followed the steps in the OP. Can someone help? This is my list:

Can anyone do and confirm this little Test
Try this:

- go to roster germany in the museum
- klick "submarines"
- klick right "subs" and swith true units (it's not many sadly..)
- klick on all units
- circle to the ships with the right arrow.

- here my game crashes again, for now always on the "Emden" ship... - Vanilla Install (no mods) has this not

- also OHII (that added much to the game) on a Install with no other mods does not have this.


Changing all sounds and sdl to Vanilla has no effect.

Escort crossed me from left to right ok.

Tried to cross me again from right to left ctd.

Reloaded previous save and instead of coming down the middle of the channel as before I kept well over to the right at TC1.

Patrol ended ok.

In all the ctd's I have ever had I always get dumped out to the Uplay grey screen that you see that gives you the time you played when you exit the game.

Yeah I'm getting the same Berbster. CTD (I think its time compression that's doing it - but I also get one occasionally when switching or opening torpedo tubes unless I switch with the button on the full dial next to the periscope - i.e. manually if you follow me).

You have got some serious issues going on here.

You have a lot of incompatible, old and out of date mods.

You need to start again from scratch.

This can surprisingly be an enjoyable experience if you go about it in the right way.

Sober has an intensive mod list for the more demanding player who is looking for full immersion.

Mine is based on his but less demanding for the level of my expertise.

My ctd's happen in general play especially on the way to Kiel from Danzig even at TC1

I came in to Kiel straight down the middle at TC1. This escort crossed in front of me and then back again got a ctd.

The last time I did the Baltic Campaign is the first time I have not had a ctd in this mission.

Real Navigation does not seem to like the approach in to Kiel. I am on the right side of the channel keeping out of the way of the escort but my Navigator shows me on the left.

I save and load the game again and the Navigator correctly plots where I know I am. It is pitch dark, so I do not use Real Nav just stay on the bridge using TC1 and TC2 and using the marker buoys to guide me in. Mission completed no ctd..

I will go from Heligoland to Scapa at TC64 this is the fastest TC I use as with the AI you need to be capable of reacting to any enemy aircraft.

Thanks guys! I knew I had quite a few issues and outdated mods - downloaded most of them ages ago and transferred them to a new pc - and at the same time forgot which ones weren't needed because of other mods etc and could never be bothered to re-do it from scratch!

I'll give it a go later on today. Its added to my "to do" list along with power-washing the decking!!

I run SH5 with TWOS 1.04 fully patched to TWOS update n° 10. My pc is brand new and has no problem running much more demanding games then SH5.

Alas, I regularly get this particular CTD when I either enter the nav map or while the flottila commander is doing his speech within the bunker. I have yet to make it past "Coastal Mission" due to this particular CTD.

I will try disabling "Render patches" in TDW generic patcher and report back what I find out.

On a side note, TWOS is a brilliant mod!! :D

Well, this is weird.

As stated in my posts up above, I have tried as mega mods both The Wolves of Steel (TWOS) and Wolves of the Deep.

I have two laptops that both run Windows 10 and have both been recently reformated, i.e a fresh Windows 10 install.

Laptop A runs an Intel Core i5 with a Geforce GTX 560M graphics card.

Laptop B runs an Intel Core I7 with a Geforce GTX 860M graphics card.

I downloaded SH5 from Gamersgate on both computers, updated them to version 1.2 then followed the instructions left by the mega mods authors.
SH5 with either mega mod starts on both computers without a problem, I can even start a patrol, usually Danzig Bay.
This is where it get's tricky.

On the older laptop, with the Geforce GTX 560M graphics card, SH5 runs perfectly.

On the newer laptop, with a more powerful Geforce GTX 860M card, everytime I open the navigation map, either on patrol or in the commander's briefing in port, I get a sound semi-freeze, and a complete crash, not a CTD, I literally have to manually restart the computer. :/\\!!

As per Vdr1981's original post up above, "CTD scenario 5", I have disabled Render Patches in the TDW Generic Patcher. Sadly, nothin' doing.

Must be some incompatibility somewhere. Any ideas anyone?

Check the settings between the 2 gpu's and see if they differ?

You could also try running the Debug Viewer from data\applications\ which might show you where the crash is occurring from.

I'll try that and see if I can find the problem. As for "data/applications\", I'm currently running Sjizzle's "Wolves of the Deep", there doesn't appear to be an "applications" folder within the SH5 "data" directory.

Well, as mentioned earlier I was tracking down the reason identical installations of SH5 would not work (i.e not crash or freeze the pc) on one laptop and function perfectly on the other when both ran Windows 10 x64 and the only difference was a newish graphics card (Nvidia Geforce GTX 560M vs GTX 860m).

I seem to have finally narrowed it down to a NVIDA driver problem.

In the most recent NVIDIA driver update (358.87 released early November 2015) something or another was freezing up once the navigation map was being used in SH5 with the GTX 860M. Actually, all the updates of October 2015 had the same problem.

A rollback to a previous NVIDIA driver update from August 2015 ended the problem (update 355.98).

As for what part of the driver or which .dll was mucking it up, I'll leave that to up to the more inquisitive subsimmers to figure out.

I forgot to mention, I figured out it was a driver issue as the NVIDIA 358 driver update was making most if not all graphic intensive gaming impossible. Random other games were crashing too.

Alas CTD's are not limited to SH5 which as we all know is a buggy mess!!!

I met a nasty CTD trying to cross the straights of Gibraltar disabled entry coastal vessels audible in tdw patcher just to squeeze my way in. Time compression was restricted only at 128 to preserve performance. Did save game near the end and at loading it shsim.act ctd.:o:88):huh::/\\!!

This area is known for ctd's as it uses a lot of resources.
Any port area will drop your frame rates down due to the amount of activity in a condensed area.
TC128 is far too high.
You should be looking at TC32 max and be prepared to drop it lower.
Use CTRL+F8 to monitor your frame rate and adjust your TC accordingly.
