SH 5 Starshells patch v1.0

This small patch modifies starshells and TDW's red distress flares so that they won't cause any lag/stuttering when launched. Be aware that these reduced starshells are cosmetic feature only, enemy ships won't get any boost to their visual sensors using these. This patch affects warships, TDW's FX update merchant starshells and red distress flares. Note that not every ship can fire starshells and distress flares.
Works with TDW's IRAI (make sure you don't have "remove starshells patch" installed) and FX update (make sure you don't have unchecked distress flares from zones.cfg). Uses materials.dat file from "Dynamic Environment 2.9.

This is a great mod :up: however I get CTD s. I see it uses a file from dynamic environment and I use Real environment. Might be my comp setup, but I really tried to tweak the dynamic one and I went back to RE after "jelly sea" and stutters made me angry.
Is DE a must for this to work? or is it my comp that plays tricks on me (again).

I'm a DCS and ROF fanatic, in a few days a BOS one :D, and later on (hardly waiting) with DCS WW2 Europe 1944... :cool:

I have been using both mods with the starshells without any crashes, can you tell more details about the CTD's, what exactly happened when everything went wrong?
I can also make two versions, one for Dyn. env. and one for Real env.
PS. Real environment is also a very good mod!

I had ctds as well with my mod list . Seems to be when i fired my torps and ctd was when they or i was spotted but is just a guess . Anyway the game would ctd before any star shells were fired .

yep, I believe that DynEnv inherited its copy of materials.dat straight from RealEnv. I don't know exactly what modifications were done over the stock file, but they shouldn't be critical anyway, i.e. they are purely cosmetic, and overwriting the file shouldn't cause any ctd.
Maybe stoianm will be able to add some further detail.

sober's smoke screen mod but, again, as far as I know, it only modifies some effect properties :salute:

I think Rongel has added the "regular" Materials.dat to his mod for two reasons: compatibility with stock game, and some guns still firing starshells even with FXU enabled.

It shouldn't, it works just like the edited materials.dat file. Only reason could be that I used the file from FXU v21, and not from 22, but the files seem identical, there shouldn't be any problem.
I did some new tests but can't replicate the CTD's, everything is like it should be. I did even couple of "Silentotto" campaign starts, no crashes. :hmmm:
So all extra info concerning is welcome concerning possible starshell related CTD's.

I think there is the same issue that I had/have.. more mods = more unexplained CTDs..
I did another test with FXU 22 TDW_FXU_Flares_Materials.DAT file, and it too worked just fine, and I'm still using v21. So the CTD's shouldn't be related to your FX updates version either.

Thanks for the info! But I still don't spot any bugs roaming around, your list looks ok, both of the overwrites should be ok, and work for me just fine. I saw that you don't have the new FX update patch that should remove some crashing, maybe that will fix the issue??? Maybe sober was also suffering because of that?

I tried again with sobers new list and with the FXU_0_0_22 ship zone file. Placed starshell patch where sober has it and later in the end where sjizzle has it. Tried that with the ship zone file too. Same result. It simply refuses to start at all using silentotto. Removed starshell patch and all fine. I give up I think and use the IRAI patch.
Can it be related to options settings or patch settings?
I saw somebody suggest changes in the patch but I can t find it again

Do you use TDW fix for Sobers chimney smoke? My dispear is turning to optimism here. After hours of searching I found I can not have OH2 , SH5 starshells patch and TDW chmineysmoke fix, but it works with any 2 of those three.

Good detective work there! I use all of the three and haven't witnessed problems. What campaign are you trying to start with 'silentotto', or is it every campaign that crashes? I can try to duplicate your results.
I don't know if it helps, but I can also make a test mission where you should see starshells in action easily!

I haven t tried all, but It seem it doesn t matter. I tried the last(final something), western app, mare n, archtic convoys. I usually use mare nostrum cause thats the one that always give trouble(if there is trouble.)
Anyway as I write now dissapointingly I hear it work with those three and fx update new ui s and irai. That means I have to start over again and find a fourth. will get back to you.
A test mission would be great, but for now I want to see what combination messes up the start. As I mentioned I believe that if it can t start a silentotto campaign it will definatly give trouble elsewhere. Persnonally I didn t get ctds with the starshells or with the irai patch. I did get lag without the Irai patch though and I want to use this startshell patch.:salute:

Then with oh2 and starshells it worked until tdw chimney fix.obviously those three work together too, so it seem its a three of four, or maybe even four of five that can work together here not two of three as I first thought... if my tired brain can still be logical. I always have fx update, new ui s and irai present. Aren t those required anyway?

I came down my list to finish putting new ui s then I put Irai, tdw chimney fix and oh2. this did not work but after taking away something (didn t matter what it seemed) it worked. then all of a sudden it worked after I put the same mods back in. First time I experience a list that don t work all of a sudden works.
There is a pattern,I can feel it, but I can t see the pattern. Some mods are way more troublesome than others , but its not really mod conflicts. To blame the starshellpatch alone here isn t right although that was the last added and the hole thing worked without it .this is something else...jsgme related somehow I think. FXU0_0_22 ship zone was added after starshell patch. That never gave trouble.

I wonder if merging many mods in a single mega mod, as you are doing, would have the side benefit of reducing the evenience of JSGME-induced errors :hmm2:

I would have chosen mental breakdown myself, but I barely have any time at the computer at all to do anything. Just finishing up the mk17 mine model for OH2 has been a challenge and taken already too much time, stretching out the release for Trev. And I still have to UVW map it and texture it... And then import it. Just not enough time in a day. I don't think I launched the game in good 4-5 month.

Edit:full list now works with starshell patch, but I removed ai subcrew and tdw chimney fix. Before that it was CTD.Just saying again it was only Silentotto starts.

I tested the mission(tried even at TC 32 till I died and no CTD ;) )
I saw a flare each time I hit is that right?
I tried again and surfaced. I saw one white , then a red flare was shot up when the boat explodad..I m happy with that:)

Destroyers and some merchants fire starshells if they spot you or a torpedo or an explosion. Red distress flare is fired when a certain damage zone has been damaged/destroyed. You should have seen several white flares, when the destroyers start to fire them, probably around 5-10 flares together.

I only saw one starshell. I kept staring at the sky while they hammered me with shells. All times one white starshell..and the red distress flare.Might it be me using Real Environment?does particles or objects need to be 100 percent?I think I put most graphics stuff like couple of notches down

To add the Starshell shooting gun to a ship (class) do the following. You will have to do this to every ship (class) you want this added to. It will appear on every ship spawned from that class. The Starshell gun has 60 rounds of Starshells, each lasting 1 minute in duration in the sky when launched.

First disable the 'FX_Update_x_x_x_ByTheDarkWraith' mod via JSGME. Next navigate to \Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\FX_Update_x_x_x_ByTheDarkWraith\data\Sea and open up the folder of the ship you want to add the Starshell gun to. In that folder will be a file called xxx.eqp (where xxx=the class of the ship). This is the ship's equipment list. I'll use the NLL (large merchant) as an example. What we are looking for are the ';SH5 FX Update' entries. They will be NodeNames 90-93. Now Nodes 90-92 are for the PA announcements and horns/whistles and Starshell gun. NodeName 93 is reserved for my upcoming AI torps mod. Now to get the Starshell gun we have to add the new equipment to the .eqp file. For the Starshell gun it's '5InchStarShellGun'.. Let's say we add this as our new equipment for NodeName 90. It would then look like:

Save the file and close it. Enable the mod via JSGME and enjoy the new ship's Starshell lobbing gun. This will be present on any large merchant the game spawns.
Yep, you don't need to edit the equipment files, they are all right. It sounds to me that the destroyers weren't firing starshells, only the one merchant in your test.
You could check your IRAI settings (data/scripts/AI/ship-weapons.aix), it should look something like this:

This is third attempt no idea why some stuff turn blue
Looks ok (except the blue text!) so everything should be allright. Sometimes destroyers fire several shells, sometimes less. In the test mission I get about 8 starshells when I stay submerged and just fire couple of torpedoes to the ship docked in front of me. So the destroyers can't see me, they just search for me.
There is basicly three things that make starshells work:
1. IRAI with starshell commands, it gives the order to ships to fire starshells
2. a weapon that can fire starshells. In stock game destroyers have starshell-ammo in their guns, so unless some mod changes this, destroyers can fire starshells.
3. starshell materials and particles in a dat file, this is also comes with the stock game, except that they make the game lag really bad.

Wow, I took out IRAI_0_0_39_ByTheDarkWraith_Patch_1 and used this Starshells patch, I didn't getting any stutter. It was very smooth from my beginning attack and to end, with my tests. Much more so then when I had IRAI_0_0_39_ByTheDarkWraith_Patch_1 in there.

Have you noticed the [TEC] Silent CTD Hunter (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=210153) thread? It discusses the distress flare red issue. Another issue in this thread talks about FX update 22 and .zon files.
FX_Update does not cause CTDs. Users cause CTDs. I have been using FX Update ever since I made it and I have no CTDs.
Distress flares cause no problems on my system. Starshells also cause no issues on my system. If you are getting CTDs from the flares or starshells then it's not FX_Update or IRAI it's something else.
Try playing the game with just IRAI or FX_Update enabled and you'll see that the flares/starshells do not cause CTDs.
That Silent CTD Hunter thread is severely flawed in how you are determining CTDs. In order to properly chase down CTDs you need to be running the game in a debugger. Thus when an exception is thrown by the game the debugger will catch it and break at the code that is causing the exception. Then you begin the investigation as to why the exception is being thrown. That's the only way to properly diagnose CTDs. I recommend Olly Debug v2.01
