It is forecast to hit 7C here today, but I don't think it will get much over 5C. I would rather see snow than this rain. the laneway is mush and I can't go anywhere. IF I really had to get out, then i would drive on it, but I don't need to and I would prefer to have it fairly smooth for the next snowfall. Makes it much easier to work with if it is smooth rather than rutty.
Got my new LED spotlights on Friday and I will install them today.:yeah:

-24*F this morning. I haven't looked at the forecast this morning, yet. I think we will be climbing out of the deep freezer soon and get a lot more snow. This is a good thing.
According to Environment Canada we can expect an inch today, 2 inches tonite and another inch tomorrow. Last time they forecast 2 inches we got 7, that was a good thing, too. Temperature is going up to 7*f and rising.

Old man winter hasn't stayed very long here in my neck of the woods in Utah. It's REALLY warm this winter from my experience. I think temperatures are averaging in the 30's. We haven 't had a good snowfall in my neck of the woods since early December I think. My front yard is frozen, but the snow is completely thawed. I think i see green coming back to the lawn, and buds are starting to appear on the trees. This shouldn't be happening until the end of next month at the earliest i think. Ordinarily, i'm shoveling snow every 2 or 3 days. I've shoved snow 2 or 3 times total this winter.
Of course my backyard still has snow, and my neighbors accross the street have snow on their front yard. Ode to having a house sitting on a south facing lot. As an aside, somehow I don't think california is going to be getting as much water from us this year. LOL

Perfect day sailing the 25' Catalina on the north bay at the confluence of the Napa river and the Sacramento as it empties into San Francisco Bay. 69 degrees, some haze, lots of ship traffic and sailors out. Surfs up and small craft advisories; waves are 40' just down at Mavericks for the surf championship!! We hit 8 knots before losing our nerve!!! One 20' log off Alcatraz reported by CG. We were on a newly resewn main sail and didn't want to press our good luck. New Garmin GPS radar interface overlay hanging just inside the hatch way on the slider roof works to perfection...a piece of cake for any one whose played with a SHV TAC screen actually.( Ipad nav does it too) Ships with transponders-give you name, speed etc. No errors, problems or mishaps from launch to docking- a rare day...and why I left Minnesota!:arrgh!:

Are the ski hills making snow?
I can't find any specific information on daily activities, but I'm sure they are, just to put some fresh powder on top of the snowpack.
The sparsest Utah winter I'm aware of was 1976/77, when the resorts got a total of about 300" and Salt Lake City had no snow at all.
On the other hand in 1991/92 the ski resort at Alta got more than 900" of snow, and the road up Little Cottonwood Canyon was closed two or three times per week. The following winter, 1992/93 started off fairly mild, then in March it started snowing and didn't stop until mid-May, finally ending up nearly as heavy as the previous year. After that the reservoirs were full and the snow melted all at once, resulting in the infamous '83 floods.

It's been an interesting winter this year. We had temperatures spike up into the 40's and 50's, melt all the snow off, then the temps plummeted into the minus double digits and the ground froze solid 26 inches down. Plays hell with some people's connections to the municipal water supply (pipes buried too shallow). Then the snow comes back, it stays ultra cold for a few weeks, then we get another temperature spike. Overall this winter hasn't really bothered me, but it's obvious that others are ready for spring.

It is a good thing that my well is 176' deep and the water line is buried down 5' with a 2" layer of styrofoam directly over top of it (1" of styrofoam is equal to 1' of dirt, so in theory my water line is covered with 7' of dirt). The cold water comes out of the tap at 40*F.

I think the standard depth for water supply lines in a temperate climate is 18 inches. My well is down 90 feet and last year we had the feed freeze up where it comes into the house. Easily thawed with a drop light.
It's been much colder this year and it hasn't frozen once. I guess I got enough insulation in there to prevent it from freezing again. That or the water is cleaner.

The only salvage yard around here is a U-pull it and they're bandits. Besides, pulling a door glass out of a junk vehicle is asking for trouble. I've never been keen on putting used parts on my sled. My dad was cheap that way and I refused to put used parts on his vehicles.
When you get used parts, you get used, hosed and raped. Then you end up making the same repair again. I'll be taking it to my local auto glass shop on the 18th. That was the earliest I could get an appointment so I guess mine isn't the only one that popped.:hmmm: Most salvage yards prefer selling the whole component(door) and clips. A factory glass is out of the question due to obsolescence. The auto glass shop provides lifetime nationwide warranty. Seems the only logical choice for this repair. Eh?:)

Eh?:)
That was the other option. OEM is way too pricey.

Funny you should mention that. General Motors was always kind of pricey with their parts. Then they began importing them from foreign manufacturers, getting them cheaper but still charging domestic prices. Makes me wonder why they needed to be bailed out when the recession started. So they had trouble selling their cars but still made bank on parts.
Greed from their investors and management?

Back in the day when one could actually fix a car/pickup themselves I ran GM's exclusively. 64 Pontiac, 2 59 Pontiacs, 65 Chev, I could get all my parts from the wreckers. (you need to remember that I had 6 Auto wreckers with 30 miles of me, plus all the farmers that always had one or two derelicts laying out in the field.) Parts were easy to get and easier to match up. Parts were cheap. Parts were also made in either the USA or Canada. Now the parts are made in Mexico or another third world country and they are expensive. I think Corporate greed is involved there, big time.
My money bailed out Generous Motors, but I haven't seen one thin dime of it back in interest. As far as I am concerned, I will never own another GM vehicle again.
My Jeep Wrangler has been really reliable and the parts are expensive, but when this one is no longer fit, I will get me another one.
I think that the only truly greedy ones there are the corporate management.
I don't see a problem with investors getting dividends on their money IF the company is making money. But if it is not, then why not cut the dividends a bit? It has been done before and companies have survived.

GM = Government Motors.:03: A former GM CEO was once quoted as saying...
"If it's good for General Motors it's good for America. If it's good for America it's good for General Motors."
I've always been a GM guy. I was a GM Parts guy for close to twenty years. My first car was a Dodge and it was a rag. I've been driving Chevys ever since. Mainly because they are, or were, engineered with the mechanic in mind. Heck, even the weapon I carried in basic training was made by GM.:haha:

Chrysler products in general IF the dog pees on the tire, they won't start. The only Chryco product that has been any good to me has been my Jeep.
I will not buy any car/truck that hasn't been built in North America. Keep Canadians/Americans working, buy Canadian/American.
I used to get my GM parts at 'dealer trade', but that fell by the wayside when my favourite parts guy retired and I bailed on GM vehicles.

My first car was a 1950 Ford. It was almost all there. No floorboards, you could literally see the road going past. Sat on a milk can.
2 nd car was a 1961 Morris Oxford. Painted British Racing Green. Nice car, fast. Was way faster after I put the Austin Healy motor in it.
Never owned or drove a Corvair.
My buddy had a '58 Chev that was an auto matic 283, he changed it to a 4 spd standard 348 and 2x 4bbls progressive linkage. Now that was a fast car.:yeah:
The first car I ever drove was a 1947 Plymouth. I stole (took it without the owners' permission) it from our driveway while Mum & Dad were out of town getting drunk at a Grey Cup party. I did that twice. I was in my 40s when I fessed up to Dad. He admitted that he figured it was me, but he didn't care because the car was back where it was supposed to be (backed in the driveway) and with more gas in it than when he parked it.

Mine was a '62 Ford Galaxy 500 that dad bought for my older brother and I. But in his eyes it was his car. So much so that he thought he could prevent me from using it by removing the power steering pump. Fooled him though. I didn't want to use it. I preferred dad's 67 Plymouth Sports Fury. That was a nice car. So I waited until I got a job and bought a '72 Dodge Charger practically new. It was a demo that the dealer owner's wife had driven for a year. I'm not sure on that one, and I couldn't express it properly to get a good reading off of Google, but I believe that "plus" or "minus" in this instance is slang, and doesn't come under grammar rules. I think it should be <any temperature> "or lower", "or higher".
Madox58

Almost makes you want to clear cut the whole place. At the start of winter I lost two trees from beside the house. I had the snow blower on the tractor so I had to move them with the Jeep instead. The guy and his helper came and chainsawed the tree branches off. putting them into his wagon bit by bit and leaving the main section of the trunk lying on the lawn saying he'd be back at the weekend to collect it, he wanted it to make garden furniture out of.

If that Oak is big enough in diameter and straight it would make nice boards. If not, then firewood.
Don't do it...many years ago I was charged £250 to rid me of a tree in the rear garden. I wanted the stump left standing about 4' from the ground to act as a base for a feeding table for the birds.
The guy and his helper came and chainsawed the tree branches off. putting them into his wagon bit by bit and leaving the main section of the trunk lying on the lawn saying he'd be back at the weekend to collect it, he wanted it to make garden furniture out of.
Muggins (me) paid him and the twunt never returned!!!
That'd not likely happen around here. They're getting $250 bucks a cord for firewood.

Most of the ones around here even sell punky wood for their $300.oo/cord. The guy I have gives it to me for $270.oo/cord mainly because I am never in a rush for it and he can deliver me a pickup load (1/3 of a cord) on his way to town. He knows that if I should run short I have no problem going to his place to grab a third myself. I have never found any punk in his wood. All Maple, Oak, Beech and Yellow Birch.

Yep, just a few opencast left as far as I am aware.
When I was a kid just about every terraced house had a coal bunker in the backyard.
The steam powered UK of Jim's day is long gone. his tv is still steam powered though.

How is your hydro bill?
Zero. Except for the few pennies of electricity it takes to pump it out of the ground.
Edit: Doh! You're talking about electricity, eh?:D
I don't get my power from Hydro One like you do. So I didn't know what you were referring to until I looked it up.:haha: Solid proof that one's IQ can only be accurately measured by where you happen to be standing at the time.:know:
My electric bills run around $200.00 a month. It would be cheaper if my stepson wouldn't stay up all friggin night!:stare: Plus, we have baseboard electric heat on the main floor. The coal stoker only supplements that heat by warming the basement and the floors. The coal stove operates off a thermostat placed @ half way up the basement steps, controlling the feed and the convection fans according to temperature. It actually heats the house well enough that the electrics rarely come on. Towards the end of January I ran out of coal and the wife waited a few days before calling the supplier and we had to run the electrics for a couple of weeks during that polar vortex.
Women! Can't live with' em, can't depend on' em, can't kill' em.:hmmm::03:

Sorry for the confusion. The way you say 'eh' at the end of a sentance I thought you might be a misplaced Canadian. I forgot that down there in the sunny, snowy south you call hydro electricity 'electric'.
My 'electric' bills were $100.oo+/- $20.oo twenty years ago. Now they are $196.oo/month. I heat with wood almost exclusively and when the wood stove upstairs in the main part of the house goes out, then the oil furnace kicks in. I also have a wood stove in the basement. One winter I tried heating totally with the oil furnace.....$3,000.oo later I never tried that again. Firewood costs me $2,000.oo/season, cut, split and delivered.
If I was 30 years younger, then would go with a heat pump and probably see a return on my investment, eh?

swamprat69er

Hydro One uses nuclear energy, now. The 'fuel oil' boiler is just a forced air hot air furnace.
during the times that we stupid Ontarions don't use enough electricity to suit Hydro One, they (HO) give it away to Michigan and New York states and we Ontarions pay through the nose for it. Win, win for the hydro company. Lose, lose for the rest of us.

The storm has hit in all it's fury. Can't see the houses across the street. Current wind speed here, Charlottetown, is 73 km/h. Predicting gusts up to 110 km/h over night and 15 cm more snow. Also a big danger of storm surge on the north shore during high tide. Really bad now along the Bay of Fundy. Weather Network reports gust there at 190 km/h. That's a hurricane.
