sorry if this is a stupid question, i know, but I am inexperienced in the subject ... I wanted to ask why if I'm going to see US submarines in the museum, they have a conning tower completely different from the one you see during the campaign? ... how do I get the conning tower that you see in the museum?
I do not know if my question is clear enough, I know to be ignorant, do not kill me for this..

The conning towers you see in preserved subs are usually late war configurations with a cut-down silhouette with 40 mm anti-aircraft guns mounted everywhere. Must US subs, including the Gato class started the war with a large blocky conning tower. War experience dictated chopping it down in size to decrease the sub's surface profile and increase diving speed. To get the conning tower you like you just have to survive until they are available, or get the Balao 1941 mod, which starts you out in 1941 with a late war sub.

Generally speaking there are three stages of refits.
-Early war
-Mid war
-late war.
Each refit becomes progressively available as time goes on. Mid war refits tend to occur in mid 42 to early 43, and late war refits occur from early 43 onwards to the end of the war.
Each refit has a more progressively cut down conning tower and fairwater. It is the late war refit that has the change of paint job, and additional AA gun positions.
When a refit becomes available you have a *chance* to get one. It's not guaranteed. The random chance to get a refit occurs when you dock at your base at the end of a patrol. :ping:

You're welcome. The same question about those bathtub-shaped conning towers was in my mind when I first got this sim. :)
