Hey all,
Since last two days made clear that RSD has little to do with the crashes some of us experience when starting new campaigns with silentotto, and the fact that we have been polluting multiple topics with random thoughts and bughunting, I thought it would be a good thing to start a new topic, bundle what we know, and go from there in the hunt for this bug.
Spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ar__9ltm8QEmdFpQSXNDRGNhSmdWa2QzLWZ5RmVoV 0E&usp=sharing#gid=1) we where using with CTD campaings.
As we can see right there, the issue is not RSD related. It was present pre-RSD and only gets worse with RSD installed.

I didn't follow the issue from the beginning, but I suppose that plj, Mike & Co. have already tried with a minimal mod loadout. At least with the BoM campaign.
In any case, RSD is designed over EUF + NewUIs (especially the former), and OHII is also a prerequisite because the problem shows up in some campaigns, but not in all of them. Summing up, a minum testing configuration could be:
EUF + patch_1 + patch_1_hotfix ( + sober's patch_1 available by date)

(New UI's)
RSD
I'm strongly tempted to add DynEnv in there as well .. should be compatible non ?

- Problem is present in sober's list. Asked sober for confirmation in his topic. Will add a link to here with updated info. Please confirm sober
- Problem is NOT present in minimal modlist, as suggested by gap, and tested by me and as can be seen in the used spreadsheet.
- Problem is NOT present in minimal modlist + FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith.
- Problem is NOT present in minimal modlist + FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith + R.S.D. - Reworked Submarine Damage v5.3 by vdr1981
From this we can probably deduce a number of things:
1. The difference between the minimal modlist and sober's or mikemike47's list contains the cause for this issue.
2. Given the forlast test scenario, it's unlikely to be caused by FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith itself.
3. Given the last test scenario, and the above listed conflicts in JSGME .. coupled to the fact that not all campaigns where CTD-ing, my guess would be to look in the <location>.sim files for the issue .. changed by TDW FX Fix for Sobers chimney smoke .. so I will try to add that next, and see what happens.

Retested the CTD campaigns, works fine with this list. Will add RSD now, 5.3 .. starting to doubt it has anything to do with the mods, and more and more believe volodya hit the nail on his head with 'just too much to coope for sh5' ..

So, silentotto-ed my way to each campaign dock without CTD with 5.3 enabled. It can be ruled out as cause for CTD I think.
One thing I noticed while looking a bit closer into stuff, is that DynEnv contains a few of sober's patches, that are listed sepperately as well.
I'm starting to think that it's the list mikemike and I are using .. not the mods per sé. I'll be manually reviewing that list and bring it back to sober's one, except for where we use newer versions, see what that does. :salute:
I can reliably reproduce the bug with sober's list (that's with RSD 4) See this post (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2125593&postcount=2402).
This makes it a so far unnoticed issue with sober's megamodlist imo. :D Question is, do we leave it at that or do we continue to track it down ? I'm all for tracking it down, and if possible solving it... this list is a huge improvement over stock SH5 .. it would be a shame to have to compromise.

Edit: Quite sure that's the issue .. running on the following modlist now, able to start the campaigns that gave CTD's earlyer.
Hmm... I'm not at home computer right now, but I remember faintly that there was some issue here with EUF and my Longer Repair Times. There was a patch released to EUF and a hot fix, but could it be that my mod was already out and it wasn't updated to the latest EUF fixes. :hmmm:
I'll check this out later in the evening!
I think I erred there .. as I also left out FXupdates 0.0.22 ;) Just put longer repairtimes back in and will test again without fxupdates, as including them gives me CTD again.

With RSD you don't need Longer rapair times v1 at all, because it's already contained in RSD. You can look at equipment.upc and see what's going on. RSD uses Rongels equipment.upc, i just edited damage description for some equipments...:03:

So either some mod is using the altered effects in an unintended or wrong way, causing the game to crash on dockload, or there's just an issue with that mod by TDW. I still have to test on minimal modlist with FX .. gonna do now.

I am thinking the same thing, plj, what volodya61 said.
With the modlist provided. It took 15 instead of 10 minutes to load screen then CTD.
Modlist - RSD v5.3 + RSD test = 25 minutes and a blank screen. I just decided to do a hard power down with power button. I felt computer was going no where. No HDD activity light anymore. Did a proper restart in safe mode, then shutdown. Restarted. Modlist - RSD v5.3 + RSD test2 = 20 minutes and then CTD at bunker (**.upcge files removed from submarine folder, comparing RSD test2 to RSD test, IIRC)

Yep, patch 1 hotfix deals with the weapons, my mod doesn't touch them.
And yes, I think it's a great idea to put all EUF-patches and hotfixes together, three installations is too much for one mod! :D
If I try to add FX Update at the end, this is the warning list:

All in all, does removing Fx Update 0.0.22 from your mod list solves the CTD problem? If yes, did you try replacing it with the previous version?
Again, as stated many times by Volodya and recently remarked by you, I am convincing myself that we are reaching SH5's engine limits. I hope to be wrong, but this could explain why some campaigns are loaded and some others not (depending on the number of ports, convoys, scripted events, etc. loaded in memory for each campaign) and why some mods which are crashing the game if used in your huge mod lists, don't if used as single mods or in a minimum mod list. This limit may vary from system to system, and obviously from mod list to mod list: the more new damage boxes, equipments, units, flags, etc, they bring in game, the more likely they will crash it :dead:
As a side note, are you using antilag and/or the 4 gig memory patch? :hmm2:

What I did an concluded are the following:
-You suggested that minimal list I used to fill in that sheet, without any CTD.
-I added to that RSD 5.3, without any CTD
-I then took sober's list, incl. RSD 4, and got CTD's at known suspects.
-I then, in a stroke of n00b genius, tried to remove SH5 Longer Repairs v.1 from that last list, and took FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith and FX Update 0.0.22 Torpedoes - MagDet range 3m (modified for torpedoes failure patches) out by mistake as well, no more CTD's
-When realized my err, took out FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith and FX Update 0.0.22 Torpedoes - MagDet range 3m (modified for torpedoes failure patches) of mikemike47's and my own list, no more CTD's
-Added FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith and FX Update 0.0.22 Torpedoes - MagDet range 3m (modified for torpedoes failure patches) to the minimal list, extended with RSD 5.3 .. what do ya think ? .. yup .. no CTD's :/\\!!
-Tried to figure out what is affecting files used by FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith and FX Update 0.0.22 Torpedoes - MagDet range 3m (modified for torpedoes failure patches) and can, in single combination, rule out all conflicting mods except for the lifeboats which are not used by sober (=excluded by logic) and irai and rem (on it).

I always used antilag and sh5.exe is already patched for use more than 2Gb memory (from the beginning/by devs)..
IRAI and REM work fine in combination with extended minimal too. All the mods that JSGME told me would be conflicting if I added FX Update to the end of my list together, cause no CTD in 2 test scenario's.

Antilag increases loading times and could therefore worsen the problem, as it shows up during campaign loadings. As for the 4 Gb patch, yes, there are contrasting theories wether it makes the game to use more memory or, on the contrary, it limits SH5 to only use 2 Gb. In any case knowing if plj used it or not during his tests is an important piece of information, I think. :hmm2:

I have included a Main Mod Low Resolution Patch in DynEnv's package. It contains texture files reduced in size and, when possible, more compressed. You can enable it on top of the main mod if you think that water_splash or other large DynEnv textures might be the cause of your CTD's.
Another good measure could be unchecking 'Texture Quality High' from graphics menu. I don't know if reducing game resolution and other graphic settings would also help, but doing it is probably worth a try. Like it or not, the conjecture that those crashes are coming from memory shortages when game data is loaded in memory, is getting more and more probable. :yep:

Zones.cfg => the one of RSD is the most up-to-date. Enable it last.
flag.dat => probably the same used by OHII. If not (check file size/date), OH should be enabled last.
UBoot_Sensors.fx => should be the same used by New UI's.
UBoot_Sensors.GR2 => as above. Overwriting EUF's version of this file is okay (checked the files yesterday).
UBoot_Sensors.sim => enable R.E.M - no hyd on surface - NewUIs-IRAI compatible last (it contains all the controllers needed by NewUIs for telescopic snorkel).
NF_Boat_1_* => probably identical to OH's files.
Sh.sdl => OHII should contain all the latest added sounds (compare file sizes/dates). Also check Volodya's version of the file in subsim downloads. If bigger/more recent, enable that one last.
sim files from alexandria2 to venezia => let TDW FX Fix for Sobers chimney smoke to overwrite FXU's files.
water_splash.dds => it is just a texture file. shouldn't make much difference, but DynEnv's (main mod) version is probably bigger. For further detail see my previous post on the topic.

7.4.2 is back and it works fine. No CTD Mare Nostrum Silentotto. I tried with and without longer repairs on both. 7.5.0: CTD 7.4.2 :good to go.
Oh I forgot to tell I put zone.cfg from FX_Update_0_0_22_ByTheDarkWraith into OH 2.2 mod (replaced)
So, yesterday I threw back most of the mods I had in my original list ... no CTD. I continued to plug in remaining mods, and right now this is my list:

Much to my own surprise, NO CTD's !! This means that the difference between a working and non working list is non existant. The ONLY difference in mods I started out with, is the SH5 Longer Repairs v1 which isnt in there anymore.
I'll test to make sure that this was the issue .. altho I think one of my tests already ruled it out .. I'll be back :haha:
Edit: Clueless now ... no CTD's anymore with original list ... it's as if the issue solved itself magically.
Tried to alter system date in an attempt to reproduce the CTD's we had .. no luck.
Could this in any way be cache related ? (someone please save me from going mad an gnawing away at flatcables while throwing transistors out the window...)

It's SH5...:D It seems that the only thing you needed is one mod list/game reinstallation . If you remember , i was suggesting game reinstallation together with a bit shorter list at the beginning of this discussion but, no one wants to listen me... So, now you should cross your fingers and enjoy campaign...;)
I'd love to be able to believe that ... except that:
I did not reinstall the game. I unloaded my modlist, and slowly build it back up again over the last few days .. constantly getting CTD's in certain scenario's.
NOTHING changed ... at all ... no more CTD's. No different method of installing, no fresh mods, no clean save dir after first wipe, no adition, no update, no ommision.
It just vanished. As a computer engeneer, I refuse to accept that and I want to know what the f is going on with VC++ and SH5 that makes this happen.
I also thought about there just being too many mods. This can not be true either, as a mod is nothing more then an overwrite for an already existing file in most cases. A few actually add stuff, like TDW's, but they are stable as can be for as far as I have been able to tell with testing.
What I think COULD explain this, is JSGME. If JSGME gives special effects for some reason (messes up backup/restore proces cuz of date handling for instance) we ought to expect special effects with sh5.
Only people that have recently been messing with their list seemed to be affected .. others had no problems and where accused of robbing NASA for instance :p
I dont know of a way to test this. (I use dd-mm-yyyy on my system ... if it interprets mm-dd-yyyy, all sorts of crazy things can happen)

I finally made it work with RSD. What I did was go out and reenable snorkel in options before I started. Never tried before because I planned to do that in bunker.:hmmm: .Found out that western approaches didn t work either until Snorkel was "fixed"

I continue to hunt. What I found out is that when some Mods are installed for example RSD and the Realistic hydrophone 1_0 (that just came out) it crashes Mare Nostrum Silentotto. However in both cases I could start a New career go out on patrol then exit game. When I reentered game I could start the game M N silentotto and no CTD. Been proved severel times now. I tried to move TRevs Auto scripts to the end of JSGME , (A mod I always had), And No CTD Mare Nostrum. I m 80 percent sure(more 90percent) that when I put Realistic Hydrophone 1_0 from end of JSGME back to the place Sober put it I got CTD again. Same procedure:start new career start patrol exit game and I entered M N silentotto without CTD. I m to tired of this to retry moving that mod up and down. I t could been a coinsidence. Move realistic hydrophone 1_0 from where Sober have it to end of JSGMNE should not mean any difference at all since it only overwrites a file from new UI s and it was behind new ui s all the time
This sounds as para-computer science to me :doh:
I have seen relistic hydrophone, and it should only overwrite some of the New UI's files, i.e. its position relative to RSD shouldn't make any difference :hmmm:
If you read my own posts back in this topic, you'll notice me pinpointing the issue, and it then mysteriously disapearing never to be reproduced again.
I sortof gave up ... I can think of no reason for this other then JSGME doing unintended things ... but without being able to reproduce reliably, it's hard to diagnose :(
Edit: I might create a manual modded game, see how that goes...

Anyway if I m the only person who experience it just like this then it s kinda worthless. I ts not Normal to try M N silentotto everytime something new is installed....oh hmm to avoid confusion I didn t mention that I got CTD with western approaches Silentotto the one time I tried that instead.
I can count ZERO ctds silentotto starts after started new career from beginning with the excact same JSGME list. I think I had like 50 CTD tries when I add up trying to change to New ui s 7_5, RSD and Realistic Hydrophone

Same here ... reliable results .. untill the error vanished and I got not more CTD's where I should get them. Only thing I did is disable and enable different mep profiles about 100 times.

and you could add realistic hydrophone and didn t get any CTD? silentotto MN start I mean...I could reload both my saved game on patrol and in bunker with no problem.It was only silentotto M N (I didn t try other campaigns now) It should not be a big deal then except it shows theres some instability somewhere and maybe that somehow could give CTD s later.

Yep, in absence of other evidences, it seems to be the one reasonable explanation. Blaming it is too easy though: unless you can reliably reproduce the problem, it could be caused by a myriad of unponderable factors...
Never happened to you that you tried running a burdensome program, let's say photoshop, and after the initial splash screen it stops responding? It can happen especially after a long working session. When you try running it the next time, it loads okay, whereas other times it reuired the system to be reset....
Another example taken from my personal experience. I while ago skype started crashing my system (blue screen!) every time I used its chat. It happened suddenly, and with no apparent reason. Probably some windows update conflicted with it, or the last skype update didn't like my system for some reason. A reinstall of skype and many other attempts to fix it, were worthless. Then, as suddenly as it appeared, the problem vanished and it didn't show up again until today. I still a bit baffled.
I don't say that the examples above fully apply to your odd experience, but for a computer illetterate like me, they resambe each other :03:

Where are you getting the ctds . Just tried silentotto MN and works flawlessly . Also re other comments , took 2 seconds to load . Have you tried right click on the SH5 EXE and go to properties/compatability . Run the program for windows 7 and run as administrator . Also uneneble all mods and then play the tutorial right thru then enable all the mods and then start a new campaign using silentotto .

Thats excactly what I get too when trying Silentotto start.
both before and after I installed fresh. Then I found this crazy way to fix it like I described.
I have not yet tried what you suggest Sober thx for the advice. Right now it is fixed and it seem very stable but it would be interessting to track this down. Plj and I obviously had something similar.

I ll try to remember what happened. I started a new campaign since mine was messed up..... I didn t get my new boat while in Mare Nostrum. I wanted to start approx where I left off so I experienced my first Silentotto ctd while trying to start new campaign in Mare Nostrum. my list was still old so I renewed it before trying. I tried several times without luck until I remembered I forgot to reenable the snorkel. When I did I managed to start my campaign in Mare Nostrum. I decided I wanted to go without snorkel but that was impossible until I started a new campaign coastal waters went out on patrol without snorkel then saved game. Then I managed to start a campaign in Mare Nostrum without Snorkel.
After that I experienced the same when enabling new ui s 7_5_0 and RSD. I had to start a new campaign coastal waters with those enabled, then start in Mare Nostrum afterwards.

More confusing. I was back in ctd hell trying Silentotto start in Mare Nostrum or Western app.(don t know why I keep testing that). This time my old trick of starting a new career coastal waters campign first didn t work. No luck starting western approaches or Mare Nostrum. What finally worked was to start coastal waters campaign but don t start patrol. Then I started arctic convoys..it worked. after that Mare Nostrum worked too..
I start to feel I m spamming now ....
Generally if I get silentotto CTD one time I get it 10 times too unless I do something that changing some stuff in the game wether it is remove a recently added mod, add/remove snorkel or start a career in a different campaign.
