What sound do you long to hear, may give you pleasure or peace or you simply enjoy it. {Keep IT CLEAN PLEASE}
Mine would have to be hearing a steam locomotive in the night, the whistle, the steam, the chug chug. My grandfather was a steam engineer that retired in the 60's, but for another 10 years worked doing scenic rides for different parks. When he worked, the train ran about a mile behind our house. As I kid, I can remember grandpa giving me a special toot was he went by at night.
The train no longer runs through our town, now s8 to Martinsville Va. My wife and I booked a weekend trip to Cass to ride again. Last we did it was an xmas 12 years ago, the high mountains were beautiful.

There are many awesome sounds in this world...but there is one that never fails to give me the chills and the goosebumps.
The sound of a P-51 Mustang going by. :yeah:
Of course, a Ford Mustang with the right exhaust system fitted sounds great too. And the sound of a good explosion is pretty great.
Automatic Weapons from a distance sound cool. A-10's flying over, radial engine warbirds....
On to more calming things... :arrgh!:
Dead silence can be calming. And most definitely the rain. Bugs in the woods at night.
:hmmm:
Just can't think of any more.
Of course, music is good.

The sound of the symphony orchestra warming up just prior to performance. It is a cacophonous sound of individual musicianship, then a pause. The A sounds from the concertmaster, followed by the ensemble signaling that something cool is about to follow. Chills every time.

Actually, the ABSOLUTE roar of the shocked 10,000+ home crowd and teammates, one time, as I ran thru the mark of a desperately shallow penalty kick in a rugby game to intercept the ball from a receiving stunned opponent's hands and staggered into the end zone against an overwhelmingly superior 'A' team touching down for 'tri' as they ganged, trying to prevent my putting down the ball (for score) in the end zone. We went ahead two points-held on for life (5 LONG minutes) and prevailed...My only solo scoring moment in four years, but especially satisfying as I had been appointed captain, and we were the tourney host team.:Kaleun_Cheers:

A well tuned stroker motor always sounds great be it a V8 but something just sounds awesome about an inline stroker for example a Datsun L28 stroked out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hlQhYKC-RA
Or a 1969 Mustang 429 BOSS(the only good sounding Mustang:yep:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hlQhYKC-RA better sound good at $90,000~$200,000 a pop for a true original from the factory matching numbers.
This a is a great sound as well the German forest(or any forest) when no one else(human) is around.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJzTEDeCvCI I used to mountain bike and hike all the time in this same region.
I agree with HunterICX rain can be nice when it is a gentle shower especially on a metal roof.

The sound of a P-51 Mustang going by. :yeah:
Which is an identical noise to a Spitfire, Hurricane, or 1950's Spanish Messerschmitt Bf 109's and Heinkel He 111's. :sunny:

A tin of beer being opened :D.
A few weeks ago we had a flyover by a Spitfire and that was very impressive.
Popping the film on a jar of coffee knowing the great smell of coffee is about to hit me. :yeah:

Too numerous to mention but aircraft wise...the sound of the BoB Lancasters 4 Rolls-Royce Merlins as she flies low overhead, or the Vulcan bomber racing along the runway at take-off, the Frightening (can only accelerate close to take off speed these days and last but not least, the Typhoon coming in fast and low at the commencement of her display.
I can't disagree about steam locomotives at all, they have a wonderful sound to them, especially at night. Love that video Armistead, what fascinating looking locomotives.
I've got a lot of favourite sounds, hope you're ready for a long list.
Steam whistles are quite beautiful to me, especially the A4 chime whistle, the Bulleid whistle and a GWR whistle, although Stanier hooters are quite nice too:
A4 whistle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=runBptNy7_8
Bulleid whistle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahrcypmx2UA
GWR whistle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqvVCzKDTSM
(I do like the tick-tock noises that many GWR locos make too)
Stainer hooter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv_TLsnGxU0
And of course, the traditional wheel on rail gap sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ2PUG55tkc
But modern trains also fall into my favourite sounds category, although most of them are sadly no longer in active service.
The cooling fans on the AL6/Class 86 always remind me of journeys with my father down to London to stay for a week or weekend:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GqjsOJD170
The sound of the old slamdoor DC electrics remind me of my youth in Kent back when these old stalwarts ran the commuter services into and out of London. There are many sounds that make me smile from these old trains.
Their horns:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvQhwGCXUgI
Their motors:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSZSZQqIXmU
Their air compressors:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0UaeLUJehY&feature=player_detailpage#t=170
And the old DEMU 'Thumper' engine, also long out of service:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH57NzMtIT4
Good days.
And now, alway from the railways, other sounds both man-made and natural.
We'll start with the air:
Rolls Royce Merlin, an obvious choice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yprfH5ZsAHk
But also, the gun-portholes of the P-51 Mustang:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL5QRjfgITk
And the C-47:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOn7yx70Dgw
And other man-made sounds.
The M1 Garand 'ping', not comforting to the person who's fired it, but smart Marines could fool with an empty clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jobfbmwVu9o
Blacksmith sounds:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdQSPCtC__Y
Natural sounds
A Cats Purr:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWVaqk4H7b0
The Dawn Chorus:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jR2VjukqE0
Swallows and Swifts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnGBmJFw1wc
And the call they make on the wing, it's the sound of summer to me when they arrive.
Cats meowing and trilling:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUyt_GNrF1U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq1MUWeGdsY
Seagulls, and the sea:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xys0gMPDHFA
And, of course, rain, especially on a window:

I like the sound of a B-17 flying low as it comes in to land.
Rain, really heavy rain and wind when I am lying in bed all tucked in and cosy...

One of the more satisfying sounds is the 290 fuel squeezer Cummins engine with exhaust turbo whining in a cabover sleeper Freightliner, with all 18 wheels whining harmoniously on the freeway asphalt at 0200 in the morning. Spotting a drowsy driver wavering ahead, possibly drunk but probably just falling fatally asleep, you maneuver to his six o'clock and blip the VERY LOUD thud of Jacob's compressor brake switch,(illegal in most small hamlets) restoring said malfeasant to instant wakefulness and a blip into the next rest area. A life possibly saved, you and the strawberries head on to the Big Apple... The air horn would work too but the Jacob's is just cooler.:Kaleun_Sleep:

I suppose having worked around aircraft on a daily basis I really must disagree with the idea of enjoying jet engine sounds. But when you have to yell over them to get through their noise and through ear plugs and head phones so that someone else can hear you well you get a little tired of jet engine noises as you deal with that and also feeling them drone though your body for 12 hours a day.At least crew chiefs had mike system so they could talk right into the pilots ears.Flight line work is tough business especially on a fighter base and even more so on a carrier those guys have it the hardest many people would quit that job in hours.
In a way at least to me with the sounds that a machine produces you are actually enjoying the power and the engineering that the sound represents more so than the sound itself.

I long to hear no sound. Just peace & quiet, but an acute case of Tinnitus prevents this. All I hear is incessant ringing, all the time. Ironically, the quieter it is, the more pronounced the ringing becomes and it's been getting worse as the years pass. Doctor said it was due to nerve damage and when I was 36, a hearing test revealed I had a significant loss of this sense.
I can't remember what silence sounds like.:nope:

The Jake Brake is only cool if you're running straight stacks with no mufflers. Then you can awaken those sleepy little bergs in the night and your co-driver too.

I to live with this! I hear it even when the TV/radio is on.
I got it from being in Bands from age 13 to around age 25.
All I'd like to hear is the sound of my Wife breathing while asleep minus the ringing.
