Just wanted to get a 'feel' for the worth of me doing a New screens mod for SH 5.

A 'black and white' version was done by me for SH 3, see here:

I would try to do it along the same lines as that one, keep it black and white, use real photos as backdrops etc...

I have a limited 'personal' version that i have been using for a while now, and maybe the public would express enough interest for me to get a release version on the drawing table.

Aim of the mod would be purely and simply to give it a less-cartoonish look, more realism-orientated images, for example:

That's a sneek-preview of my personal use version.

What this mod DOESN'T aim to do is change ui grafix, crew icons, maps, make u-boot skins, etc etc...

Purely screens...

As long as the rest of the pictures you are going to use are of the same outstanding quality as the previews you have posted here, I am with you! I am sorry but I cannot stand blurry or poorly-framed photographs, no matter if they are rare historical documents :D

Another important point (to me) is homogeneity and "cleanness": pictures should have the same size and exposure, font(s) used (the lesser, the better) should be easily readable, and different screens should follow more or lesser the same style, fitting SH5 menues as good as possible.

Finally, I have a few suggestions inspired by your previews, if you don't mind:

1) Loading screen:


I would apply a slight warm tone to the picture, for better "old photograph" look.
What about reataining the original SH5 logo (just a bit smaller)? It would give a touch of color, and it would make your screen mod to look a bit more "familiar":

2) Campaign Start Load Screens:


Lesser confusing background. I took a yellowish paper sheet for my example, as if it was an old photo-album page.
Warm tone filter applied to the picture (see above).
White corners applied to the picture, for consistence with the photo-album idea.
New Fraktur font used for the known facts, black in color for better legibility against the light background:

If you like my ideas, but you feel that they would involve too much work for one person, I will be glad to help you with image post-processing and new font definition :salute:

Yes, I like the fresher, modern feel you gave to the screens for SH5, gap. Makes it distinctive from SH3. Beautiful screens for SH3 by Feuer Frei!.

I am quite fast as far as photo editing is concerned. The one task wich could take a bit longer is adding the new font in game. Anyway, talking about time requested I wouldn't equate this project to the other ones where I am involved.

Had I suggested to colorize Feuer Frei's photographs (I liked the stock transition from B/W to color images, suggesting that history is coming alive!), things would have been more challenging then, but I really wouldn't have time for this :)

just do it, don't look for the "need" or enough people to "want it" before you bother to release it.

if you made the mod and like it then release it. tomorrow next month next year there will always be others who have the same likes and dislikes so please don't wait for "requests for it" or "enough interest" to share your work.

once the mod is made then bundling into a mod is the easiest part

very good suggestions in relation to the 2 pics i posted.
With the "Silent Hunter 5" heading, i would perhaps desaturate to blend in with the overall feel of the mod, ie a black and white feel to it, with no colours incorporated into any edited screens.

Keep the cartoon-feel away! :03:

As for things like changing the fonts, i hadn't even got that far yet tbh, would have to check that out as well perhaps.
