View Full Version : [REL] SH3 underwater dust&suspended particles
Mod Released!
From the "readme":

Rubiniīs underwater dust&plancton effect v1
-------------------------------------------
- What this mod does?
This mod adds underwater dust&plancton effect in front of the object, free and event camera. This effect is present in sh4 and sh5 using shaders, what isnīt disposable on sh3.I added this effect using particles attached to the above cameras. Isnīt perfect but seems very reasonable and imersive anyway.
- Things that i must know?
1.Take in mind that the number of particles can be virtually "infinite" as their shapes colors and properties. Its very bore to test and test all the possibilities, so i finished with some that was good for my taste and environment. This is very important because sh3 have a lot of different environments (read here underwater colors, fog and light) and millions of self adjusts. So the present effects could end not so good for you. You always can open the files, changes the dust&planctons textures, their sizes, colours, opacity, etc, etc to fit better your taste&environment. If you do so, please share your "version" with the comunnity.
2. I also added to this version some blur effects and the destabilized object camera. Some ppl could not like this. I will try to release an solo version later.
3. The effect on this first version are very tiny and discrete. The effect on object view is yet more discrete than the free cam view. Let me know your preference.
4. I also prefer and have tried a more fine particles but they just vanish in the underwater restrict colors/environment of sh3. Itīs really not easy to make the same effect good for day and night colors. So this first version is a compromisse and a WIP! Please let me know yours comments.
- How to easily adjust the "amount" of visible particles on object cam?
Open the modīs cameras.val file with s3d and locate on the "line" 48: "FastParticleGenerator", GlobalScale, OpacityScale. Just change this number from 1,2 to 1,4 and you will see a considerable more "amount" of particles - in truth they were already there just barelly visible. Try with different numbers. Also individual particles can have their opacity adjusted individually.
- How to Install?
Itīs jsgme ready and just one tiny file.
Ahoy!
Rubini.

Old first post:
Hi guys,
Few days ago I finally achieved to make a very desired mod for my self: add some life and realistic feeling to the empty underwater world of Sh3! SH4 and Sh5 already have very good effects below water. Now we have some of them also for Sh3!
Take a look at this video and let me know your comments. Take in mind that the effect is better in game than in the vídeo because the suspended particles are sometimes very discrete.

That looks quite promising Rubini...nice one http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif
Thanks Jimbuna!
Itīs already done. Works in any external view (obviously only underwater:O:): object view and free view (event cam yet not tested). The magic is that the "dust" is absolutelly alive, we can use infinite numbers of different particles, with different shapes, colors, transparency, sizes, etc. They have rotation and flows with the sea. They are present at any deep and at any place on the ocean. Much like Sh4 and Sh5. The interesting is that with this approach will be probably also possible to have real 3d clouds and volumetric fog because I can now put anything attached to the cameras, a possibility never openned before for SH3. Iīm looking at this clouds/fog issue now. Letīs see!
This underwater dust mod is in truth very very small as it only adds two or three controllers to the external cameras. Will release it soon.:up:

Are you attempting to answer my question? Who's we? And where?
Good work... :up: Rubini.
... but nothing new, I think... this is a standard application of the particles such as e.g. air bubbles under water but connected to the camera, obviously... and, maybe, with animated sprites... but, it's, I see, without the volume effect... need more very small particles, I think.
Good luck.

Yes, the news here (at least for me) is the success in attached particles to the cameras nodes and make them works correctly. Reading a few minutes ago Hansīs post about HAHD ocean alive itīs almost obvious that they also have find the way to make the particles works on cameras nodes. And also i guess that i was correct about my idea to add more and more particles/object particles to the cameras. They will work!:up:
And i agree, animated particles/more particles will be the best. But i have not the time (neither the necessary skills) to make good volumetric/animated particles. This will be for HAHD team.:D I will try to release this mod with directions to the players adjust the particles by theirself, this way the effect will fit better wich one installation/mods.:yep:

The same feeling here. I like and agree that the effects must be not too much, not so few. Even that this is not always easy to be done because sh3 have serious engine limitations, poor underwater environment colors&effects (you make them good for day but they are not that good for night and so on) and also because we have a lot of differents modded environments. For sure we will need to have an adjustable colors/bright/opacity/size/amount particles properties by the player for this mod.:up:

Hi Rubini,
Nice mod. I enabled it after Ultimate ObjectView Camerav1.0 mod and it looked ok from the first glance, but I'm getting frequent camera blur effect stuck on screen forever when I lock camera on the unit (external cam) and then boost time compression a bit. Camera then is stuck with blur effect on external view. :wah: I also noticed that blur effect is more common to stuck when my u-boat is submerged rather than on surface. Perhaps it will help to solve the issue in future..
Edited: Disregard the text in red, the blur effect gets stuck when submerged u-boat reaches speed of h'sie's hardcode fix..:
4. Periscope-Fix
Periscopes nearly useless for higher speeds, since blur effect simulates periscopes vibrations. At higher speeds, periscopes are moved down automatically.
The effect that should be visible only on periscopes can be seen on external cam too using this mod..

You Sir are a genius! Just one tiny file that doesn't even conflict with any other mods and it looks so cool :D The only problem is now I feel seasick when I watch an MTB bouncing on the waves... But I'll get used to it soon.
I didn't realize how e m p t y the underwater sea scenery was until I tried your mod. Thanks a lot :up:
@sailor_X
I use this mod as it is and also with hsie pericope speed blur limit without issues. Just the blur as expect from both mods.
Let me know if you or someone more want it (this mod without blur effect) and I will make it.:up:
@sublynx
Note that the unstabilized camera can have 99% of goods but it also have 1% of odd moments, for example when the uboat is surfacing/submerging at great speed the camera becomes a bit too inclined - nothing that you canīt solve changing the angle view with your mouse anyway. All the others 99% time it is just great! And it really seasicks!:up:

Rubini, I like the blur effect too, perhaps it happened because I enable it on top of Ultimate camera view 1.0 :06:

I have now played with this effect while attacking a convoy and I have to say that this mod is a great atmosphere enhancer. The unstabilized camera gives the perfect illusion of watching the events from the deck of a ship bouncing on the waves and if you're forced to dive you dive into a sea with plancton and whatnot and not just a blue nothingness.
This mod is like KB's Diesel Sound mod, it only changes the tiniest part of the game, but once you try it you realize that you just can't play without it because these kinds of mods take you inside the game world. Just like KB's diesel sound making a big difference to the feeling of speed when the engines start really roaring at full RPM's this mod helps one distinguish between sailing along slowly at 8 knots versus full speed at 15 - 16 knots as the seasick effect gets the worse the faster one travels :arrgh!:

S! Rubini;
Superb work......I do enjoy underwater outside view....seeing partuciles of all sizes and shapes...;floating around....
Well done,
Thank you:up:
Thanks again mates to try this mod!
Just to remind that the unstabilized camera mod (that are added to this "dust&plancton" mod) isnīt only about unstabilized views. But also about really free object view camera, with far in/out zoom limits and fov changes at your fingers! this IMHO is also a must.:up:

I guess that this is about hsie mod. As you said in the picture the uboat is above hsie periscope blur speed, so i guess that this is expected. Do you already tried to disable this feature on hsieīs mod and see what happens?

Well I tried without your mod and there was no problem with blur on external cam attached to a unit. So I believe the problem lies in your mod, or somewhere in between those two..

Hi sailor_X,
I will release a version without that blur effect. Anyhow, as I said i have not any problem at my end. These "odds" things occurs with hsieīs periscope blur, but they are intentionnal on his mod to really makes the game "unplayable" above that setted submerged speed. Stay tunned!

Well I was hoping it could be fixed, but if not I will use this mod anyway. Blur effect itself looks great. I'll just try not to force those odds to appear :)
