Anyone with the know how etc willing to make a realistic wake island and add something to the barren marcus island? I am working on a mod of sorts to go along with RSRD, basically my own improvements in the traffic(such as areas void and missing major convoys) and small side things.A realistic wake island is much needed in SH 4, the facilities there just are not accurate.Anyone willing to to model this? Marcus island is just empty also, needs some minor facilities there. Thanks in advance.

You and me both. I wish there was a tutorial for 'simple' projects (for some people) that I would also like to learn.

Maybe it is placing preexisting items/models and adjusting elevation. I noticed when Carotio made Truk, many parts were submerged before he corrected them. It may be easier than we think - time consuming for sure.

Vickers interiors are light years beyond me but I wish I knew how to start.

MM was working on a tutorial that abruptly stopped - I learned a lot just from those few pages.

If you want to change the shape of the island it is much more difficult than changing the 'docks' and buildings. Changing the docks and buildings is a little time consumming but not necessarly difficult if you work from a "template .dat file". It has been a while since I have done it, but it can be done.
If you could be more specific on what you want to do.

Editing the terrain requires ref's Terrain tool for SH4.
Looking at any place that has docks and buildings gives you the details for adding same anywhere you wish.

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense.

Ref jokingly said his tool was for digging holes but when I tried it out it is mostly changing elevation by color however my skills with a program like Photoshop are what is stopping me .... also stopping me from working on the detailed interiors similar to Vickers outstanding work.

The 'simple' (for some) model of Sofu Gan .dat required a lot of help - then when I thought it was finished I needed more help converting the frame to triangles but that is what the game engine needs to display a model.

A more than 'nice touch' would be for the radar to pick up land masses - which it doesn't. The reply is always 'it is a hard coded issue'.

I like the template idea - thanks again.

I'm not so much worried about the shape of the island(its close or appears so) but mainly the facilities there, they are just unrealistic.Could also use some targets can be destroyed with deckguns(such as fuel tankers in Travellers mod) , mainly just improve the facilities. There is no runway, there is a city and docks lol Wake was pretty remote and Marcus Island is uninhabited lol. Also, Anker, great job on sofu gan, love being able to see when in transit.Use it as a meeting point for some psuedo wolfpacks im working on(AI fleetboats that while cant attack, can be placed at right time date for convoys in RSRD, used to distract escorts, had some success in trials, just working out some kinks)

This would be big, if someone could figure out how to do it.

Maybe we could bury battleships under the sand. That outta give a radar return. :ping: I'm joking, of course.

I've added a few wrecked BB's into the sand.......

Looks nice!

I assume you put them there just for "atmosphere"?

Thought they looked better than seashells.

A while back (2008) Nauticalwolf was posting a running tutorial on how he was rebuilding Pearl Harbor. He never finished but the thread is here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=135926

Most of the links are broken and pictures gone but you can get an idea of what he did. I think I kept some of the example files. If you want them PM me.

I second the "Bravo Zulu" for sofu gan:up:

Thanks, I was following that Pearl Harbor overhaul and related posts with interest too.

Burying a BB is not that crazy.... I bet that radar picks it up. Try melting one down and shape it to the contour of the land and sprinkle that with rocks & sand.... Sadly, I am reminded that the SJ radar in SH1 was spectacular.

I wonder if using a small Maru and standing it up vertically inside the land mass would work. I'm hoping to have some time in a few weeks if all goes as planned. It would be nice to pick up Sofu Gan on SJ.

Happy Hunting!

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

With islands, I guess you would have to plant a number of ships around the edges. It would probably be too much work to do significant land masses, but maybe for "strategic" islands it would be worthwhile.

Armistead,

Did you have to do anything special to get the ship damaged? I mean when you first placed it there, it was "new", right?

I was wondering, does anybody put sunken ships in ports as blockships?

The damaged BBs are from Pearl Harbor. The Models are in Data/Terrain /Locations with file names Wreck0x.dat

Wouldn't the added shipping on a pass by of all those land masses give you the time lag bug if you used time compression??

Armistead did you get that ship from the OM Pearl Harbor? I know in OM there are the sunken Battleships on battleship row. They are even there in 1940.

Those wrecked BB's are from the stock game.

Well, that's a bit odd.

Couldn't they have put them in at the correct date?

Ask Lurker why they aren't. He did make OM after all.

If they were created from the stock game then no matter what year you were there you would see them.

I was playing as a U-Boat and in 1940 decided to take a trip to Pearl and see what I could find. That is when I noticed them. I went back on Dec 7th '41 but no battle took place.

TorpX

Well there wouldn't be any battle, unless someone scripted one.

With ships, when they are put in, you input a start date and an end date. I assumed that wrecks would work the same. Otherwise, everything we see would be permanent and unchanging; not a very good simulation.

Post 14 is correct...stock terrain textures used at Pearl, but, you can place them where you like. A few years ago I added wrecks in certain areas for the heck of it, along with numerous lighthouses on mountains, native girls, etc....I like all the native girls waving bye to me as I leave Pearl..

Nice ideas Armistead, especially the native girl touch....lol. This has been an interesting & informative/useful thread to follow.

If you're trying some kind of "Real Navigation", these could be very important. :help:

That's when I actually decided to put them in. Not sure it was totally historical, tried some of that, but thought they would look better on land and mountains instead of the docks.

Love visiting Wewak.....

Major 'Hammerin' Hank' Talmadge Elrod's Marine Corps wild cat fighter might be a nice touch; The prop hub is at the McMinnville Air Museum in Oregan. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor at Wake Island(posthumously 12/23/41) and, until the midget sub was recently discovered off Pearl Harbor,(sunk by Minnesota reservists on the USS Ward with a 6" cannon), was credited with shooting down two aircraft and sinking the first Japanese warship (Kisaragi) in the Pacific war. He died on the beach, Thompson .45 in hand at the head of his improvised defense force, gamely repelling Imperial Marines landing on Wake. Truly lived up to: 'On the Land, Sea and Air!' and was overlooked in a us mail memorial stamp release of MOH winners recently?
