I've recently bought a new computer (8 gig ram, 2gig dedicated graphics card yadayadayada... runs games full spec) and set about installing one of my all time favourites SH4 after quickly dismissing SH5.. downloaded rfb, its patch, rsrd and it's patch then booted it up to see it in all it's glory however... When I load up the campaign and start a mission it shows the loading screen and a message (sink them all or it's equivalent) then nothing, I then have to restart the computer due to not being able to force close it (many thanks windows 8). Someone please help as one of my main reasons for updating my computer from the previous one (that had been abused by SHIII GWX) was to sink my teeth into 4. Thanks in advance and I really hope that someone has an answer!!!!!:wah::wah:

Need a bit more info to help. What version of the game do you have. If it's 1.4, that could be the issue. The latest RFB and RSRD mods are designed for 1.5 game version (the U boat add on). If you don't have 1.5, may I suggest purchasing the SH4 Gold edition DVD. This is the up to date version of the game.

Version is 1.5 as own the expansion. Struggling with it, I've tried TMO and a similar issue occurs. I own the Steam versions (Don't know whether that will have anything to do with it). Would really appreciate any help...

You need to check again the true version of SH4 if you have a Steam download of it. It's been reported the Steam version of SH4 is version 1.3!!

Run the stock game, without mods, and read the version number on the bottom right of the "main" menu game screen. Personally, I wouldn't use any "downloaded" version of ANY game (guess I'm old school). If you don't have the disk, you don't have much.

Thanks for that, I'll check when I get on it later. However wouldn't the expansion pack patch it to 1.5 even though it is the steam version?

Ok so I've checked it and it's the rite version. I've also moved the files out of 'Program files' as I've heard that can make a difference but no luck!! Getting desperate now!!!

So......you've got a stock SH4 patched to 1.5!? Ok, that's a good start. You're running Windows 8 and have the "Main" game folder (Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific) placed somewhere other than the "Programs" folder. That's good, every OS newer than Windows XP should NOT have the game placed in the "Programs" folder (has to do with running the game as administrator and the "permissions" bunch of crap).

Have you deleted the folder named "SH4" found in the "Documents" folder of your computer (it could be under some other named folder like "Documents and Settings".....this folder has been renamed by almost every different OS since XP). The "SH4" folder is created every time the game is started for the first time. It holds your option settings for the game, and any saved game points made while playing. It's always good to delete this folder's contents if things seem to run screwy. You'll lose any saved games, and your resolution settings will need to be reset, but that's a small price to pay to have the game run correctly. Just for the sake of keeping things running smothly I'll delete the SH4 folder contents anytime I make a large change with mods through JSGME.

I wasn't able to tell from your replies, this problem occurs without running any mods? Just the stock game? If so, I'm guessing a reinstall is in order of the game. Follow the instructions for a clean install found in this (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133290) sticky thread. And for sure, take a "snapshot" of your clean game files just after adding JSGME. You'll use this snapshot of your game files to compare a future image of your game files if things turn sour again (and they will if you mod your game).

I've followed pretty much everything and tried the whole programs thing to no avail.. Did a quick test to see if the stock game worked and it does.. Really starting to struggle with it, the last time I tried it with the mod was from a fresh install and I started a mission and thought yes (as it had entered it and I was in the sub)!!! But I spoke to soon and as I went to the bridge and voila - crash. Started it up again only to find the same thing (now would freeze starting a mission - just after the quote). Really starting to struggle and get frustrated but feel I'm fighting a losing battle.

One thing you're not keeping us informed about is what mod(s) are you using? You say you have the correct game version. You state you "Did a quick test to see if the stock game worked and it does..". But, you don't specifically state what mod(s) you’re using? Earlier you said its TMO......But which exact version of TMO?

We can't help you if we don't get specifics.

Without going into too much further, I'd suggest you play the stock game for several missions to see if your computer can run the stock game......before adding a mod. Your last post said you thought things were going to be OK with your game modded but after a bit, it crashed. Why not run the stock game at least as long to see if it’s stable?

You also stated....."I've recently bought a new computer (8 gig ram, 2gig dedicated graphics card yadayadayada... runs games full spec)".

You shouldn't be surprised to find out that having the latest/greatest computer doesn't mean this game designed in 2005-2006 will run as expected! In 2006 we were still using CRT analog monitors.....flat screen LCD's were just a pipe dream! You’re pushing the game through a computer/monitor system that it was never designed for. There ARE things we can do to make the game come-up-to-speed for a newer system, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

For right now, get the stock game to run with the minimum options set......use the default settings. You can go back to the default settings by deleting the "SH4" folder as I've instructed earlier. I'm only reading between the lines when you say your system "runs games in full spec"......could be, but not this game.
