Britain set for two-week heatwave

Britain is heading for a sizzling two-week heatwave with temperatures set to soar into the nineties, forecasters predicted today.
The sun was expected to blaze across the country over the next fortnight, with London, the south east and the Midlands catching the most rays.
British Weather Services expert Jim Dale said: "We're going to hit the magical figure of 90F (32C)."

Daily Mail...they are about as accurate as the Express when it comes to weather. We might get a week or two of warm weather early next month or in August, but I think this summer is going to be a fairly low key affair.
Still, don't forget that March 2012 was unseasonably warm, and it was only seven years ago that we got whalloped by a record-breaker.
In the grand scheme of things, seven years is nothing.

Just dusting off the Crystal ball....

I see a boiling hot heatwave with a good helping of fog with a sudden down pour of rain that will over flow the rivers causing country wide flooding which in turn will freeze over as the whole country is hit by a snow blizzard lasting days pushing the temperature's down to -5. We can expect high winds to no winds and the odd freaky weather patten like the odd tornado here and there.

Heads up, I think the South-East is about to get their first heavy storms of the year. Spanish plume seems to have spun up some convective action in northern France, but instead of it bouncing off the forcefield in the English Channel and going North-East to Holland, it's actually coming across on a North/North-Easterly course.

Some links for those interested:

http://www.blitzortung.org/Webpages/index.php?lang=en&subpage_0=12

Looks like the biggest one of the three groups is going to take the usual route to Holland though.

I think I'm going to get damp on the way home this morning....

On the radio today we will be up in the 80's on Sunday and by Wednesday over 90's and may top the big 100 and over on Friday!

Well, let me put it to you this way:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7042220.stm
From readers comments:

Michael Fish should not keep stating that the hurricane he was talking about referred to Florida. He did not mention the States and it was clear it was in connection with the UK. Our local newspaper, the Surrey Mirror, carried a headline the day before the storm, warning of "furious gales". It was given by local meteorologist Ian Currie and was probably the only published accurate forecast in the country. Not that anyone did 'batten down the hatches' as a result!

Think the weather people should stick to facts, i.e. "this weekend it will be Saturday and Sunday".:smug: Now that is an accurate forecast.

They should stop the guessing and use a reliable method of forecasting, i.e. "there have been some gulls sighted inland so a storm is expected in the next day".

Doing the washing is like Apartheid rules, keep the whites separate. I once made the mistake of letting a red item join the party and ended up with everything pink. Not a good look for tennis whites. Much easier to leave it to the washing fairy to sort out. The dryer can be risky as well with too much static creating mini lightning storms.

I really envy you guys.
Over the weekend we had mid 90's F during day, while at 2 AM indoors the thermometer read 82º F.
I prefer cooler pastures.
For your reference, I live about 30 miles NW of Lisbon, in a nice and cool (as in cooler temperature) village overlooking the Atlantic.
From Lisbon to the south, we've registered temperatures in the high 90's F during day time.

For those of you contemplating spending some time in Algarve, the time is now, even though the weatherman says temperatures are expected to lower a wee bit.

@Jimbuna, incidentally, I've read in today's news that over here tourism in general is expected to increase, due to prices being somewhat reduced compared to previous years.

Well, I really like living near the ocean. In fact I see it the moment I step outside, and when the wind is right I can hear the monotone roar of the ocean crashing ashore at night, when everything is quiet. Rust also comes with it :shifty:

Now, just like Einstein said, everything is relative. This area is relatively cool compared to Lisbon (where I'm originally from), but still, I can't sleep in this sub-tropical weather. I hate to feel the sheets soaked in my own sweat. I find cooler climates more appealing.
As I type, temperature both in and outdoors is 81ºF (10h30 PM).

The weatherman says we are to get a 2 day truce, then temperatures will rise again towards the weekend.
Good for beach lovers though. Great weather for sleeping outside under the stars, or sitting on a rocky overhang fishing "calamares" with your buddies.
I prefer astronomy, and dreaming of a vacation on Risa. I hope there are no mosquitoes on Risa.

Steve, you're really in the wrong place for a sea view!

I grew up near the sea, lived near a couple later on, and now I'm still near it - about 5 mins to sea the ships moored and about 20 mins to the beach - the problem there is that when the weather is half decent all the tourists flood in from Yorkshire, the comfort people - they only comfort day (come for t'day - using their dialect).

Same here. And they serve some sort of watered down mid strength wazz now instead of real beer.

I miss the good ole days of taking a slab in an esky full of ice onto The Hill at the SCG when Lillee and Thommo were knocking poms heads off. Least that way you could choose what you drank. Before the advent of cans and stubbies you had to take longnecks.

Silly yobbos throwing the empty cans and even stubbies put a stop to that though.

Oh yeah! I also grew up near the ocean - Pacific in my case. While I miss it, I probably really missing all the times I went to the beach as a teenager. The only time I ever really feel homesick is in mid-winter. As strange as it seems, that's when the wind blows off of the Great Salt Lake, and once I smell that salt air I'm suddenly back at King Harbor in Redondo Beach. It's amazing what the right smell can do to you.

That said, I love being able to look out my window and see 10,000-foot mountains just a few miles away. :sunny:

We get these storms in the winter time called Nor'easters, it is basically a winter hurricane that hugs the coast, 2 feet of snow, with nasty winds.

I am the New Jersey welcoming comitee.

Is a BENNY a tourist? The seaside needs visitors to spend their money in the local shops, restaurants, bars, amusements, etc. Expect a lot of small towns and folk would suffer if the money stayed away in the summer. What annoys me is when the locals cannot even get on the beach because there are too many tourists clogging up the roads. Love them or hate them, they do provide jobs and help the economy.

Someone, eventually, had to get it right!

I'd rather be cold than hot, my favourite climate was Kosovo's winter - touching -29°C on occasion, much preferable to working in 50°C in a dark tent (or vehicle) in the middle east!

If you're cold it's easy to put another layer on, once you've stripped to next to knack-all there is nothing left bar water and air.

Yeah, they drive as if they are in the City (NYC), which to my own admission, requires a bit of agressiveness, NYC and LA can battle it out for traffic.

But the Jersey shore is a more laid back area, and they bring their horrid accents, cut you off while at highway speed, and drunk driving with them.
They are also very aggressive, and overly drunk, to the point shore towns have to hire extra police officers in the summer to deal with them.

Does good for town revenue with fines, but the citizens and taxpayers have to deal with drunken louts, and too much traffic, in addition of paying for the summer police force.

I know on the back of an estate near where I used to live in my teens kids used to deliberately set fire to the dry grass, but discarded cigarettes are another main contributary factor. It was being discussed on Jeremy Vine's show today - one listener texted in that in hot and dry weather she makes sure to take a small bottle with some water in to ensure her cigarette is extinguished. Jezza just said "what do you do with it when it's not hot or dry?". :har:

Just a a curiosity of mine, but is this heatwave unprecidented for the country?

Consider yourselves lucky, you never had to dig your truck out of 3 feet (roughly a meter) of snow, and trudge your way to work at 25 mph. over unplowed, icy, unsalted roads.

The hot can be cured by an air conditioner, try a blizzard.

Man up, I thought you Brits had stiff upper lips?:O:

Last real long heatwave was the summer of 76 and that was a scorcher. We get the odd few days and maybe a week before it all breaks down but this one is set for another week bringing it up to three weeks now. The radio today reported a estimate of 700 odd people killed by it so far.

Swap our heat for your snow any day.

You might get a Hurricane Sandy type thing too, (read the fine print)

So this little heat wave is not going to last? Expect Greece and Spain are relieved that their tourism will not be effected by all the Scandinavians flying to GB instead. Summer is certainly short. Lucky that there is no drought or it would cause hosepipe bans across the country and ruin Sunday car wash day.

Actually, emptying your bladder in the garden is fine.

http://www.theecologist.org/green_green_living/gardening/605742/urine_the_ultimate_organic_fertiliser.html

Human urine is one of the fastest-acting, most excellent sources of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and trace elements for plants, delivered in a form that’s perfect for assimilation. Not only that, we all have a constant, year-round supply of it - and it's free!

Fresh human urine is sterile and so free from bacteria. In fact it is so sterile that it can be drunk when fresh; it’s only when it is older than 24 hours that the urea turns into ammonia, which is what causes the 'wee' smell. At this stage it will be too strong for use on plants, but poured neat on to the compost heap it makes a fabulous compost accelerator/activator, with the extra benefit of adding more nutrients.

Dilute one part urine to 10-15 parts water for application on plants in the growth stage. Dilute in 30-50 parts water for use on pot plants, which are much more sensitive to fertilisers of any kind. Trees, shrubs and lawns are fine with undiluted urine, but for obvious reasons apply it underneath fruiting bushes, as opposed to directly on to foliage and fruit. Some fertilisers, such as seaweed, are specifically used as foliar feeds [applied direct to leaves], but urine is always best applied directly to a plant's root system.

Mrs Smith next door almost had a stroke when she last saw me in the garden but she was just not close enough.:O:
