Hi folks,
I'd really appreciate a little guidance. I'm an old SH3 & GWX player who just bought SH5. As i heard it was much improved with the patch & mods.
I was advised to use Sober's huge mod collection. I like it tough and realistic! My PC is a pretty good beast that hardware wise should have little with any of this.
I initially downloaded the 'one file' version that is somewhat outdated. I did have a few issues, to say the least, but there potentially was a number of reasons for this. But i won't go into that, I think i screwed up the generic patcher.
I'm in the process of downloading them all individually and get the upto date versions.
So this is what i need help with... there is a huge number of mods that drastically change the game, a game i am unfamiliar with. The learning curve for me is massive. I'm pretty busy with running a business & kids etc, but would love to have some downtime on SH5 but it is proving more than a little over whelming.
What do i need to read up on to be able to play? What mods? What guides? When i loaded up the modded game before i was so lost with 100s of mods not knowing what they were doing etc. It was hopeless.
I get the impression the keys ones i need to understand are NewUIs & Open Horizons. But any help and guidance to get me going would be REALLY appreciated, as of right now i'm teetering between persevering and just binning the game.
Thanks for any help from an over whelmed SH5 newbie!

Sober firstly let me say thanks for your hard work and great mod collection. Really appreciated.
Everything you need to know is here in the first few posts :yep:

But I'm afraid nothing i need is in that post, and i have read it several times. It certainly tells me how to install the various mods. But for a new comer that is all it does.
For example the start a new campaign section; skip tutorial? what tutorial, i don't see anything called tutorial when i start a campaign.
type 'silentotto'. what? eh? Why, what does this do?
When i do follow these systems i end up on the boat but i don't know how to do anything, I've never played the game before.
I don't think you understand what it is like for a completely new player loading 70 odd mods... so many variables.
I've never managed to make it into the bunker and have no idea how to get there. :o
So i'm left trying to read up on 70 odd mods many of which are named to mean nothing to me.
It is simply too much and makes me just want to bin the game. I'm used to simulators, they are all i play, I'm also used to modding sims.. but i'm struggling to get a handle of this without some guidance.
I'd love some help of what i need to read to get a handle on how to play not how to install.
Thanks.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy Sh5 modded :yeah:
With respect to my friend Sober, I disagree with his view that all you need to know is in the first few posts of his threads. I am working on documentation to help folk like you and I have been doing so for some weeks. I hope to publish soon.
In the meantime "silentotto" is a cheat code used to reveal all the campaigns without having to go through them
I recommend you dont start with Sobers mod list. In particular, not using real navigation for a new captain. You can use Sobers as a guide and remove the harder stuff like real navigation and his underwater fx and keep with enable external view etcetc. I dont use real navigation and I use auto TDC and no torp failures even though I could enable all those things for me I like "fun" rather than 100% realism. Maybe next campaign I will do 100% realism but for now I like my auto tdc and super magic GPS in the 1940s and having the super magix external view :)
Its a truly great game so stick with it, learn up, its well worth the effort to learn it :salute::arrgh!::yeah:
Some basics would be:
1. Generic patcher to fix hydro and many other things
2. REM
3. OH II
4. Dynamic Environment
5. Steel Vikings interiour
6. IRAI
7. EUF
8. Sjizzles charts
9. New UIs

Thanks mate i really appreciate the help. And look forward to your documentation..
I'll read up on those 9 mods and start with those. I was just reading NewUIs.. so much to understand and take in. I mean there is only 7393 lines in the option file. :hmm2: ..None of this stuff is easy for a new comer!

All the above are good advices.
I was a long time SHIII user. But when I switched last month to SH5, I was a little lost.
My advice is to begin by Generic Patcher, not as a mod, but as stand alone, in which you just enable the options labeled "blabla fix".
Then you start your first campaing. You will have to choose "Start a new campaign" and say yes when given the choice to play tutorial.
Once you are familiar with the basic commands, you can begin to think adding mods, one after one.

There is a mod to add ingame tutorials for the basics - how to control your u-boat using TDWs UI
See my sig:up:

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate it. Excuse my frustration, as that is all it is.
I have 3 questions.
1. For me 'silentotto' does not unlock the campaign. Is this normal?
2. Is 'coastal waters', the 1st mission in the campaign, the tutorial that is referred to that i should skip?
3. If so, I cant skip it. I even changed the completed tutorial line to true and it still makes no difference.

Sounds great.. but your sig takes me to your user profile. Am i missing something? I don't see any link to ingame tutorials. Thanks.

1. For me 'silentotto' does not unlock the campaign. Is this normal?
No - it should unlock all campaigns - this is the campaign selection screen:-

typing silentotto will make them all light up (as in image) and all can be selected.
I am not sure why you want this - if you are new, start your game and click on "Coastal Waters"
If it asks you if you want to skip the tutorial - select yes to skip
If it does not ask - just play through it. You will know you are in the tutorial as there are cut scenses to play through.
2. Is 'coastal waters', the 1st mission in the campaign, the tutorial that is referred to that i should skip?
Coastal waters is the first campaign of OHII - each of those boxes within the campaign selection screen is a campaign.
Read post one of the OHII thread for more info about starting campaigns and progression through them:up:
3. If so, I cant skip it. I even changed the completed tutorial line to true and it still makes no difference.

Yes - but then click on downloads - then look for the tutorial for OHII mod - blah blah
