On October 18, 1990, ZA466 was part of a formation which took off from Tabuk on a low-level training mission. But a technical fault with the aircraft’s electronic sensor suite caused the two-man crew to return to base. The accident report states that flying conditions were good when the pilot lined the Tornado up for landing, and the approach was made using a combination of navigational aids and visual cues.

The veteran British battleship HMS Warspite undergoing refit and repair at the Bremerton Navy Yard in Washington State, December 1941. A couple of dowdy looking Puget Sound ex-ferryboats are along side acting as floating machine shops. Warspite had received bomb damage during the Battle of Crete and after being patched up at Alexandria, steamed to the US West Coast for a full refit.
I remember visiting the yard when Missouri and New Jersey were still mothballed there. Would have loved to have seen this legend.
http://pyxis.homestead.com/warspite-1941.jpg
During the refit 5 of her 8 x 15in gun barrels were replaced with barrels that were shipped out from the UK.
According to her newly appointed radar officer Lt. Paddon, later Rear Admiral Paddon, the British radar sets that were to have been fitted were lost when the ship carrying them was torpedoed in the Atlantic. What she was fitted with were American improvised sets that he described 'as a real bag of tricks'.
Warspite!
Was a crime that she was scrapped, but at least she didn't go quietly.

Aye, fought right to the very end:
On 19 April 1947, Warspite departed Portsmouth for scrapping at Faslane, on the River Clyde. On the way, she encountered a severe storm and the hawser of the tug Bustler parted, whilst the other tug Melinda III slipped her tow. In storm force conditions Warspite dropped one of her anchors in Mount's Bay, which did not hold, and the storm drove her onto Mount Mopus Ledge near Cudden Point. Later refloating herself she went hard aground a few yards away in Prussia Cove.[106] Her skeleton crew of seven was saved by the Penlee Lifeboat W. & S. There were several attempts to refloat her but the hull was badly damaged.
In 1950 an attempt to refloat her, buoyed by 24 compressors pumping air into her tanks, and watched by a large crowd, the press and the BBC, failed. There was insufficient depth of water to float her clear of the reef in a rising south westerly gale. The salvage boat Barnet, standing guard overnight under the Warspite’s bows was holed in the engine room, towed off and eventually drifted ashore at Long Rock, a few miles to the west. However, by August the battleship was finally beached off St Michael’s Mount and after further salvage another attempt was made to refloat her in November. The Falmouth tug Masterman spent the night on the Hogus Rocks after failing to tow Warspite; and her sister tug Tradesman had 60 feet (18 m) of wire wrapped around her propeller when trying to haul Masterman off the rocks. Aided by her compressor and two jet engines from an experimental aircraft the hulk was finally moved 130 feet (40 m) closer to shore and by the summer of 1955 she disappeared from view.

In the 1950s there was a final effort (supported by retired Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey) to preserve the "Big E" as a museum ship at Washington, D.C. It failed due to lack of funds and lack of time to raise them.
Last voyage 1958. At least there was time for some pictures.

Standing at 42.7 m (140 ft) high, the world's tallest statue of Murugan, a Hindu deity, is located outside Batu Caves. The statue, which cost approximately 24 million rupees, is made of 1550 cubic metres of concrete, 250 tonnes of steel bars and 300 litres of gold paint brought in from neighbouring Thailand.

A little info on the battle
http://www.roman-empire.net/army/zama.html
A little more info on the battle::shucks: The greatest concern for Scipio was the elephants. He came up with an ingenious plan to deal with them.
Scipio knew that elephants could be ordered to charge forward, but they could only continue their charge in a straight line. Scipio predicted that if he opened gaps in his troops, the elephants would simply pass between them, without harming any of his soldiers. Scipio created the lanes between the army regiments across the depth of his troops and hid them with maniples (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maniple_(military_unit)) of skirmishers. The plan was that when the elephants charged, these lanes would open, allowing them to pass through the legionaries' ranks and be dealt with at the rear of the army.https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/66/Mohammad_adil_rais-battle_of_zama-1.PNG/512px-Mohammad_adil_rais-battle_of_zama-1.PNG (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mohammad_adil_rais-battle_of_zama-1.PNG)Never mind the Hastati, Principes, and the Triarii it's those damned Velites!:arrgh!: Reasonably resting on the assumption that a war elephant charge was the big weapon,... the damn Romans 'left it to the kids': Velites were the youngest and usually the poorest soldiers in the legion, and could rarely afford much equipment. They were armed with hastae velitares, light javelins with tips designed to bend on impact to prevent it being thrown back., similar to the heavier pila (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilum) of other legionaries. As backup weapons, they also carried gladii (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius), relatively short thrusting swords (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword) 74 centimetres (29 inches) in length that were the main weapons of the hastati and principes. They fought in a very loose, staggered formation like most irregular troops (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irregular_military) and carried small round shields, 90 cm (3 feet) in diameter. In the legion, the velites were attached to each maniple of hastati, principes and triarii. They usually formed up at the front of the legion before battle to harass the enemy with javelin throws and to prevent the enemy doing the same before retiring behind the lines to allow the heavier infantry to attack. In a pitched battle (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitched_battle) the velites would form up at the front of the legion and cover the advance of the hastati, who were armed with swords, and were the first line of attack. If the hastati failed to break the enemy, they would fall back and let the principes, similarly equipped though more experienced infantry, take over. If the principes failed, they would retire behind the triarii, heavily armoured, spear armed legionaries and let them carry on.Scipio opened his veteran three line ranks giving the elephants a corridor to the rear where the Velites, their front skirmishing over with could deal with the problem...effectively truncating poor Hannible's shock and awe pachydermic threat...:woot: But among the ancients, the velites usually engaged them. They were young soldiers, lightly armed, active and very expert in throwing their missile weapons on horseback. These troops kept hovering round the elephants continually and killed them with large lances and javelins. Afterwards, the soldiers, as their apprehensions decreased, attacked them in a body and, throwing their javelins together, destroyed them by the multitude of wounds. Slingers with round stones from the fustibalus and sling killed both the men who guided the elephants and the soldiers who fought in the towers on their backs. This was found by experience to be the best and safest expedient. At other times on the approach of these beasts, the soldiers opened their ranks and let them pass through. When they got into the midst of the troops, who surrounded them on all sides, they were captured with their guards unhurt.
Large balistae, drawn on carriages by two horses or mules, should be placed in the rear of the line, so that when the elephants come within reach they may be transfixed with the darts. The balistae should be larger and the heads of the darts stronger and broader than usual, so that the darts may be thrown farther, with greater force and the wounds be proportioned to the bodies of the beasts. It was proper to describe these several methods and contrivances employed against elephants, so that it may be known on occasion in what manner to oppose those prodigious animals." Sounds like tank warfare without infantry support c. 202 BC! :hmmm:

That's the first Spitfire I saw with a bubble canopy. When did the Spitfire get the bubble? I tried looking, but didn't find anything.
The later marks, I believe that one is a Mk XVI, but basically it was a bit hit and miss which ones had a bubble canopy and which didn't. The Spiteful which was essentially a converted Mk XIV Spitfire had a bubble canopy, likewise the naval version the Seafang.
The Spiteful would have had more of a show but by the time it came into service the jet era was on us and prop aircraft were coming to an end. The Seafang, though, did act as a development aircraft for the Supermarine Attacker, the Fleet Air Arms first jet aircraft, and probably the jet aircraft with the briefest time in service, quickly being superseded by the superior Sea Hawk and Sea Venom.

Interesting pics, Betonov - I seem to remember seeing something similar somewhere, in an article noting how the weight of footsoldiers kit has stayed more or less constant over the years.
One error though, the 1485 photo is wrongly labelled - it is most likely kit from the battle of Bosworth, during the Wars of the Roses. The English Civil Wars took place in 1642–1651 (on and off - historians often consider it three separate conflicts), and the battle of Naseby was one of the most significant.
I dunno, I think the War of the Roses could definitely be considered a civil war, but it's not the most common name by which it is known so it would make more sense to have labelled it differently.
Ah, and Naseby, up there with Marston Moor as key moments in the war.
I need to track down Cromwell and watch it again sometime. :yep:

Thank you Jim for a good find on this real world problem, but the truth in the article is a bit of made up truth to sell papers or such. Also odd that it is the same ship and almost exactly two years apart too.
From what little I know knocking all systems off line is not practical in today's US Navy and if it was true it would have been fixed in the last two years. If they have such a system to knock out a Aegis Combat System it would have harmed all of the other sensors that control the functions of a ship.
So I doubt the article is any where near the truth, plus the garbage about the crew being traumized by this event is just too much:
According to some specialized media, 27 sailors from the USS Donald Cook requested to be relieved from active service.

Actually the view is cropped: the picture perspective is thus thrown off. note the flacktower shadow from a steep 'noonish' sun angle without a corresponding one from the supposedly close strafing fighter. He's not that close; moreover his nose line from the eppenage (tail) to prop hub is decidedly up 10-15 degrees and he can roll right to boot. A footnote also considers: "The original caption identifies this tower as a "flak tower". However, it resembles more a normal French water tower. Also no guns are visible, leading to the conclusion that the original caption was a misprint." https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e1/Republic_P-47_attacks_tower.jpg

Well, most waves break quite close to shore, hence surfers, and if a submarine was that close to shore then it would be in deep trouble, and if that wave had broken like that it would have washed the entire boat onto the beach...and I think that would have made global media...so, in conclusion...

You're both in good company, when I sent this to Raptor he said the same thing and did a little research. Apparently it was taken from a Soviet monument at Smolensk during Barbarossa (It was captured by the Soviets during the civil war) then put on display at the Lustgarden along with other militaria. Whether it was actually used during the Battle for Berlin is not so sure, it could have been used as an MG nest (it's a Female Mark V) or an artillery tractor or both. Also unknown is its fate, whether it was cut up for scrap or disappeared off into the Soviet Union.

http://beutepanzer.ru/Beutepanzer/uk/MK_V/Mk_V.htm (http://beutepanzer.ru/Beutepanzer/uk/MK_V/Mk_V.htm) The last known use of the Mk V in battle was by units of the Red Army during the defence of Tallinn against German forces in August 1941. The four Mk Vs previously operated by Estonia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_V_Composite_tank_in_Estonian_service) were used as dug-in fortifications. It is believed that they were subsequently scrapped.
In 1945, Allied troops came across two badly damaged Mk V tanks in Berlin. Photographic evidence indicates that these were survivors of the Russian Civil War and had previously been displayed as a monument in Smolensk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smolensk), Russia, before being brought to Berlin after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Accounts of their active involvement in the Battle of Berlin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Berlin) have not been verified. (not quite so from another source.
Sometimes I wonder if it was a dream” he muses recalling that fateful flight. The last time he and Navigator George Compton saw each other prior to this meeting they were bailing out of a burning B-17 over Berlin. Compton was suffering extensive injuries that included the loss of an eye. Schrimsher came away almost unscratched. Bombardier James Conway also escaped unhurt. Shells were literally exploding within feet of him and bullets were whizzing every which way and yet he was not touched. He parachuted and was captured by what looked to him like a group of Hitler Youth. They stripped him of his outer flight suit but left him wearing his (no longer) electrically heated flight suit. He was then loaded on a turretless World War One tank for a trip thru Berlin's streets."
"There I am standing in this old tank in this bright blue suit going through the Berlin suburbs.” He had become a war trophy So one at least was utilized and mobile enough for POW transport!??
My gueß is they ( the 2 stolen In Barbarossa from Smolensk were in Berlin at war's end) were not repatriated back to Russia. Pic on one shows a lot of battle damage.http://beutepanzer.ru/Beutepanzer/uk/MK_V/MK_V_03.jpg They stole everything from musums much less their own monuments; A female Mark V is on display at Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk since 1938:http://tank-photographs.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ww1-archangel-mkIV.jpg http://tank-photographs.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ww1-red-army-mark-V-female-tank.html (http://tank-photographs.s3-website-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/ww1-red-army-mark-V-female-tank.html) http://i.imgur.com/XLMyX7K.jpg

The Elefant (German (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language) for "elephant") was a heavy tank destroyer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_destroyer) used by German Wehrmacht (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht)Panzerjäger (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzerj%C3%A4ger) during World War II. It was built in small numbers in 1943 under the name Ferdinand after its designer Ferdinand Porsche (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_Porsche), using tank hulls that had been produced for the Tiger I (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_I) tank requirement which was rejected in favour of a Henschel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henschel_%26_Sohn) design.
In 1944, after modification of the existing vehicles, they were renamed Elefant. The official German designation was Panzerjäger Tiger (P) and the ordnance inventory designation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sd.Kfz._designations) was Sd. Kfz. 184. First used (89)at Kursk in Citadel only two survived WWII-an easy target for swarming infantry and mines and too heavy for combat recovery vehicles to salvage : It was announced in 2016 that the Fort Lee Elefant would be loaned to the Bovington Tank Museum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovington_Tank_Museum) in Dorset, UK. The vehicle will be displayed as part of the museum's "Tiger Collection" display from April 2017. This display aims to bring all the members of the Tiger family together in one place for the first time. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/07/Elefant_USAOM-01.jpg/300px-Elefant_USAOM-01.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Elefant_USAOM-01.jpg):yeah:

How it's supposed to look! Especially with the A & B trip mileage odometer which is how I get paid...by the mile! Driving at night, the red is especially soothing to 66 year old eyes. I wish the seat was as good to my 66 year old ass!! :O: https://media.ed.edmunds-media.com/toyota/corolla/2005/evox/2005_toyota_corolla_sedan_xrs_ip_evox_1_600.jpg
Fortunately mine is a stick drive and driving for me is a pleasure; I understand the 2018 Corolla is still available with a manual transmission: the old sleeper-team trucker in me dies hard! Oh California!:yeah:

You should buy an older Citroen CX, XM or Xantia. Best suspension of all
(Xantia is best regarding longevity and fuzz-free driving)

Nice boat, but after a few years at dock side and week-ends at sea you will be sharing the berth with mildew.
Trimarans and catamarans have a huge problem Méo you have to stay on top of the situation at all times.
Someone on the helm that knows what they are doing and for heavens sake don't test the boats limits :o
but as long as it is a dream ... dream big for a Swan 115' top of the line sailboat with not only two helms, but two rudders also:

A lot would depend on who you were sharing the bed with :03: In the British navy that concept is....suspect! :O:
A disgruntled Admiral indignantly told Churchill(First Lord of the Admiralty) he was scuttling the tradition of the Royal Navy. Gretton wrote that Churchill answered:
“Don’t talk to me about naval tradition. It’s nothing but rum, buggery and the lash.” Langworth says that Montague-Browne personally told him that he had asked Churchill about the quote.
According to Montague-Browne, Churchill responded: “I never said it. I wish I had.” :yeah:

It seem to have a radio connected with the inside cockpit. I admit that it can be tricky at times but on the other hand you got a way better view.

This is for sure a magnificent ship!
But my father has a 45' schooner and I never really enjoyed any ride on it. The lean on monohulls can be so intense at times (as shown at 0:30 of your video link) that, on long rides, everything becomes so annoying... you can hardly sleep, barely eat, etc.
The best thing you can do is to sit on borders like at 1:29 of this video (but again imagine doing this for a long time...)

Neel trimarans are supposed to be very stable, plus trimarans are the fastest sailing ship class.

They say the building has a lot of glass walls and that the employees keep running into the walls :o
plus I just found out that the building cost $5 billion dollars, wow!
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/people-are-walking-into-glass-at-the-new-apple-headquarters-2018-02-15
Silicon Valley is known for moving fast and breaking things, but Apple Inc. may want its employees to slow down in order to not break themselves or the company’s new $5 billion headquarters.
According to documents and sources, Apple AAPL, -0.32% has run into a problem at Apple Park: Because so much of the interior is made from glass — the walls and doors, for example — people are walking into the panes, sometimes painfully.

This Hubble Space Telescope image shows Supernova 1987A within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighboring galaxy to our Milky Way.
Distant stars serve as a backdrop for Supernova 1987A, located in the center of the image. The bright ring around the central region of the exploded star is composed of material ejected by the star about 20,000 years before its demise. Gaseous clouds surround the supernova. The clouds' red color represents the glow of hydrogen gas, which is fueling a firestorm of star birth.
Supernova 1987A was discovered in 1987, and Hubble began observing the exploded star in the early 1990s. This latest view was taken by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 in January 2017. The colors of the foreground and background stars were added from observations taken by Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2.
Supernova 1987A resides 163,000 light-years away.
