Hi,

does anyone have any suggestions about how i could change my TC settings to make TC easier to use during DC attacks? im playing early in the war now, (1940) and its a simple matter to dive really deep to escape, but it takes forever (real time) when TC is always dropping to 1.

I THINK the problem may be that the sound guy keeps calling "new contact" whenever he thinks an attacking destroyer is new (when there are like, 5 of them)

suggestions?

My only advice is that this game require patience.

I think the game is trying to save you.

You are seeing the other side of the coin of this game, the first being those long travel times of bordom. Enjoy the show.

I've tried getting away from those pesky destroyers and their depth charge attacks by stepping up TC to a max of 16. To me it only made matters worse. Just have patience and sneak out of there at 1 kt with Silent Running. And I usually watch the action from the external camera view. You can get some good screen shots, and a good laugh at times too. ;)

Remember, you are in a submarine.... acting with fast moves underwater when you're under attack will usually kill you. Slow, steady, and quiet will keep you alive. ;)

I completely agree that all the Silent Hunter games are best played at very low TC. The game is much more rewarding when you stop, carefully consider every action, and proceed deliberately but cautiously. This is especially true when playing DiD.

That said, one thing that complicates escaping DDs in SH5 is the the fact that the game considers silent running speed to be only 1 knot. Historically, 90 RPM, or somewhere between 2.5 to 3 knots was the standard for a type VII. Here is what Robert C. Stern has to say about it:

"Creep speed (Schleichfahrt), the speed at which the motors made the least noise, was generally about 90 RPM, though this differed slightly from boat to boat. This gave a speed of about 2.5 knots through the water." (p. 56)

Making these values more historical might also make emergency maneuvers to escape depth charges more viable.

I wonder if you can change Silent Running in a cfg menu to 2.5 or 3 knots. But only as long as the value for the DDs detecting you at 1 knot stays the same for the change up to 3.

It's probably fairly straightforward to mod the silent running speed. But, as you indicated, I'd be worried about the effect this would have on escort sensors. Does anyone know whether these things are interrelated?

My escort evasion abilities are pretty good, and i like playing with contacts off, (which is cool, because you need to imagine what the escorts are doing and where they are based on sound volume, bearing, and bearing change rate.)

I just want to avoid sitting there with my hand on the TC button for an hour when I KNOW im gonna get away ok. I should say im playing with TDW's AI mod.

So, what TC values should I change to STOP getting put at TC1 every couple of minutes?

it would be cool to have a key that FORCED whatever TC you wanted regardless of the regular settings.
