I want to apologize for attempting to ruin the financial backing of Subsim.

I just received an infraction for posting a request for someone to share a torrent of Sober's Mega Mod, so I could share it and make the megamod more convenient for everyone to download. A poll about torrents here gave me that idea. My ignorance of not reading the rules led to my infraction.

I've learned a valuable lesson today, that charging for mods has began to become acceptable.

I'll be sure to charge for my mods in the future. That's the spirit!

Apparently you haven't learned your lesson or know what the hell you're talking about.

Nobody is charging anything for mods on here. You can download all of them for free - one at a time. Granted, it will take you a long time to do it that way.

Or, you can donate a few bucks to this website to gain greater access and be able to download them all combined together to simplify things for yourself by sparing Neal the expense of paying for your bandwidth usage.

Obviously downloading massive files is going to eat up bandwidth and it's not cheap when thousands of people are all downloading huge files off this site. And the more bandwidth people use up on this site the more the bill is for the owner (Neal) to pay on.

Really the choice is still yours to make. If you don't want to spend money but still want the mods then download them all one at a time. It will take you a long time to do it this way but Rome wasn't built in a day. And Sober has already made it easy for you by giving you a complete list of all the mods he's using so you can follow that as a guide for what you'll need and how to set it all up correctly.

Just remember this though - this website has been around for a very long time. Without donations and lots of help this site would have been dead in the water a long time ago and none of us would have any mods. I doubt we would have even seen Silent Hunter III, IV, or V come out without this site and its fanbase. They certainly took ideas off this site for their development.

As it should.

And then you make a thread about it :nope:

Get with the program machiavelli. SUBSIM is a great forum with much too offer. As well this place is accommodating to just about every size and shape of member.
All that is asked in return is respect and a little bit of common sense when posting and in interacting with others.

Your apology comes off as insincere and snide, sir. Subsim does not charge for downloads or mods. Subscribers do have more download access as well as access to megamods and patches for SHII, an 11 year-old game, but that is about it.

The "financial backing" of subsim, as you call it, is not a single megamod, but a substantial group of people who, unlike you, are aknowledging the great service rendered by subsim in nearly 20 years of activity. A service which is rendered free of charge :yep:

I am sorry that you are associating your lame idea with that poll. I believe you have totally missed the point made by Targor. His thread was not about bypassing subsim rules or yet existing (and still valid) mod sharing methods. He was rather suggesting a method for making mods which, for different reasons, are hardly hosted on public servers, available for download. This evidently doesn't apply to sobers mega mod.

I've learned a valuable lesson today, that charging for mods has began to become acceptable.

Again, you are way off. Do you know the meaning of self-financing?
No one is charging for mods here, and no one would be paying for them.

The fact that a few mega-mods are made available for direct download to subsim donors, is probably misleading you. Yet, there's a big difference between a sell and a donation: premium downloads are just a little incentive issued by subsim for saying thanks to its donors. Do you want to know why?

- no matter if you donate 5 bucks or 50+ USD: you will receive the same premium. Despite this fact, many decide to donate more than the minimum amount, because they love subsim and they feel at home here.

- a few members decided to sponsor "premium memberships" for people who cannot donate. Just request it politely in the correct thread, and Neal will give you access to the extra downloads, with no need of any donation by you.

- premium mega-mods are also available as single mod downloads, wich don't require any special membership. Many of them are hosted on subsim. Again: FOR FREE. The first or the second post of sober's mega mod features their links. Now tell me: which company provides ways to obtain its "finacial backing" products for free :hmm2:

I'll be sure to charge for my mods in the future. That's the spirit!

WHICH mods?!!

forgive me for my frankness, but as far as I can see you didn't contribute to this community other than a few delirious posts :D

As I explained in my message to you, it was an informational "warning", no harm, no foul. And also, mods are free to download, with the exception of the 5 or 6 Bonus Mods, which require a donation--a very small donation ($5) to receive. As I explained in my message to you, sir, Subsim does require support from its members to stay online. We do not have big advertising funding like FileFront or other websites. We depend solely on the generosity of the members. You do not have to contribute--it is voluntary--but please don't undermine the work we do.
