I am heading home to Kiel and get a radio message that an enemy cruiser and 3 destroyers are on the North Sea, AN4394. I know how to read the grid, but the "94" in the message has me confused. AN43 and AN 94 are almost 700km apart. How do I read this report?
Thanks for all the help you've given this noob

Yes just take for example BE65, divide it into 9 squares and number them from 1 to 9 starting in the upper left corner and working left to right. Take number 3 for example you would now have BE653. To get the final number divide square 3 into 9 squares numbering them like you did square 3. Now you find your target in say square 5, the whole grid reference would be BE6535. Once you have practiced it a little while, you will get to where you can eyeball it really close.

HW3 helped me out with this Explantation when I did my last KTB

From one noob to another...sort of...

In simple terms, each grid square is sub-divided into nine squares, which are further divided into nine more squares. Each set of sub-divisions is numbered left-to-right in rows across from top to bottom; top row is 1-2-3, second row is 4-5-6 and bottom row is 7-8-9. Thus, grid square AN4394 means the middle-left square of the lower right square of AN43.

In directional terms that position is in the middle-western square of the southeastern square of AN43. Confusing? Sketch it out on a piece of graph paper for clarity. Hope that helps.

This is the best description I've found, it gives the full description of Gustav's post above

So in the square shown in Gustav's post that woul be AN (or whatever) 5619 - if it was the middle mini square highlighted (the red 1), it would be 5615.... and so on...
Each of those mini squares are 6 nautical miles by 6 nautical miles.
