View Full Version : Nasty Brain Tumor taken out

7 days ago i notice my speech slurring or when trying to have a normal conversation ended up as one disaster after the other. Dizziness, unable to walk straight even typing this out is going to take a while. I hav lost the memory where the keys are so it all new to me again.:/\\!! ( about a 50cent piece of my brain/ tumor has been taken out).
So i went to see the doctor and told him what the problem was, he rushed me of to hospital for a ICT scan, a tumorshowed up on the brain on the xrays, they then rushed me off to the city hospital for an MRI scan. (MRI scan anyone who has had one will know what i mean when i mention STARWARS. 20minutes of it:haha: Make a move then do it all over a again). The tumor had to be removed to stop it spreading. My choice tho. If i decide to leave it in take my chances, my chances are pretty slim. Prone to more slurry speech, possible seizures, tumor spreading. Take it out i said to the surgeon.
Of to the Operating ward. 3 hrs later i wake up in the bed still coming out of Anesthetic about 1 hr later i have a seizure - fit. Scariest thing iv ever experience, face twitching, body & hands shaking couldn't press the buzzer to alert the nurses as i was shaking to much, Then what seem like an eternity i went calm. My eyes were open during the seizure which is a good sign they said. If you have a seizure in your sleep its not, the only way you would know if you had one is when you wake up in the mornin with a sore jaw or a slight dribble when speaking. When the doc told me that i thought back and remember a couple of times during the past yr, that i have woken up with a sore jaw and slight dribbling at the mouth, i must of had a seizure during the night. Wow how sick was i back then!
Okay this has already taken me nearly 2hrs to finish this where i typed it up in notepad and copy paste here stopping for breaks as i can feel fatigue setting in. Being doped up to the eyeballs on medication isn't helping either, Life is in SLOW MODE atm. I take about 6 tablet per day , codeine, Steroids, anti blood pressure pills anti fit pills, some for the stomach some for the swelling of the brain. Zombie time! Have my son and my sisters takin good care of me oh yes i want to give a big thanks to the nurses at Waikato hospital here in Hamilton NZ. They were a sight for sore eyes and im positive they lowered my Blood pressure down every time they showed up.http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/smile.png And the good surgeons who got me through the operation.
No TV, No watching movies no gaming, listen to music is ok, anything that will set the brain of into stress mode can lead to a seizure no web surfing. Even txting ona cell phone can. I got bored. Its hard tying to keep away from the entertainment. ill miss the movies and and gaming till recovery.
Ive had a lot of time to think while lyin in Hos, if anyone reading this has ever experience bad headaches extreme ones that are always in the same area of the brain. Go get it checked out at the docs and ask for an ICT scan just to be sure. according to the surgeon ive had this Tumor for years. I remember the terrible headaches and just passed it off as over stressed or fatigue pop a panadol and she'll be right.. the warnings were there. The tumor will just manifest itself where it will need to be removed or it could be too late to remove the tumor. luckily im only 49 still young enough to kill the tumor & still in pretty fit condition, well i thought i was. lol
Ok i wontbe posting on here as much as i would like. so take care everyone hope to be back when ive come right:salute:

Frightening stuff there Kiwi. I've been to siezure town and they're no fun.
Like sitting at my PC and all of a sudden my left hand begins rapidly closing and opening on its own. Then it was as if someone had poked me in the ribs with a cattle prod and I blacked out. I came to my senses just after being loaded in the meat wagon. The EMT was repeatedly asking me my name and I kept telling her puddintame. They didn't find a cause. I figured it was probably due to the stroke I had a year before. Ah well, still kickin.:)
Get well soon brother.:salute:

wow Kiwi, what a thing to happen out of the blue! A similar thing happened to my daughter's boyfriend. Didn't turn out so well for him though and he died of a brain infection a week or so after the op. I have cancer too - but mine is manageable and I don't plan to shuffle off for a while yet - but such events are a reminder that life is precious and fragile. Hope you make a full recovery and go on in good health for many moons to come.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts:salute:. Well ive had a good rest & now have snuck in to catch up on my typing skills. Watch my favorite comedy before which ive seen so many times that i know the whole film without having to watch it, so i put it in the dvd player move the monitor away from me so i wouldn't look at it and played the film - The Men Who Stare at Goats, still manage to have a good laugh just from listening to it, psychic Jedi :haha: To morrow i will do the same with The Informant starring Matt Damon another good one that will get me laughing and face palming :yep: One of matts best performances imho.

The Men Who Stare At Goats is taken from a book by Jon Ronson of the same title, when you're up to it I'd recommend reading it as the film is only one section of it!
I'd also recommend his other book, Them: Adventures with Extremists - scarily all true but written, like Goats -, in a hilarious style.
Only when you're up to it though. :yep:

It alwayys serves well to pay mind to physical occurences that are out of the norm in regards to one's health, no matter how minor they may seem. I'm glad you were able to catch the tumor early enough to prevent more permanent damage. From what you've said, the prognosis appears to be good, so I wish you a speedy recovery. I've known a couple of people form NZ in the past and you are a hardy lot, so the future seems bright for you...

:up:Captain Yes i will do my best to get back to normal, I know when im over doing it. I take breaks often and wont go near a game. I watched my son play a game last night for about 30 seconds and that was enough of that, the room start moving in seconds. Nor will i even watch a full screen film.
The hospital misplaced my glasses i was so angry at them how could you people loose my specks! They took them off me in th operating room just before i was about to be out like a light. But anyway i get home eyes straining, headaches worry = blood pressure up this aint good i thought i better make an appointment to get some new glasses, then i remembered i had some old shaded eye glasses kept away and tried those on which seem to do the trick with the stain & head aches.
Thanks to those who have said the kind words ive read them all:up: Oh and privateer no the pain wasn't behind the eye mate, but up center top slightly to the right a bit. Intense pain in that area for years, if you are having intense pain behind your eye i would get it checked out. Just to be safe.
Anyway time for my nap:salute:

It's good to hear that your recovery is going well, Kiwi.
Keep up the good work.
Yes, pain behind ones eyes definitely needs attention. I suffered what seemed like terrible sinus headaches. Extreme pain behind the eyes and in the sinus area. At age fourty, my sight went south literally overnight. Got glasses and all seemed ok. Then I was reading a book one day and became extremely dizzy. The words on the page decided to slide into one another from both ends of a sentence. Kind of like doing the sausage finger trick. Little did I know at the time, the occipital lobe of my brain was screaming..."MORE OXYGENATED BLOOD PLEASE!" My main artery on the left side of my neck was becoming occluded. Then the doctor nearly finished me off with a script for industrial strength sinus medication. A day later I couldn't understand speech through my left ear and my left hand wouldn't cooperate in picking anything up. I was in the throes of a massive stroke and on the way to ICU for a few days. Afterward I no longer knew how to tie my shoes. Handling eating utensils was a pain and I was always laying my left wrist in my food. The left arm constantly felt like it was coming out of the socket at the shoulder. I couldn't drive for the longest time because the lines on the road confused me. One could not feel more helpless and it scares you. I'm very glad they found the source of your problem and fixed it. I once had a good friend who suffered the same thing. He didn't fare as well as you. After his surgery to remove the tumor he could no longer speak and this fellow was a gabber. It was heart breaking to see the tears rolling down his cheeks from frustration at not being able to express himself.
OK, I've taxed you enough with this diatribe. Keep on keepin on.:yep:

I woke up early this morning in a hot sweat due to the med + heat and the first thing i remembered was the characters i met in Hospital so i thought i would type it all down
I have some great stories to tell while my time in HOS. My friend Derek who was in for the same OP as me who came up to me one night to have a chat and a joke about out brain tumors, Derek was wheeled into the OP before me and i never saw him for days after that, i was getting quite worried if he had made it till it was time for me to go home then we met again during that time. And His lovely wife who did all the talking for him answering all the questions to the doctors he could of just sat there and let her speak he still would of got the go ahead to go home:haha:. Before we can go home we must past this test which requires standing on one leg with eyes close and not falling over, walking in a straight line and answering any questions correctly. We fail it, its another night in the cuckoo's nest.:nope:
And how could i forget the lovely old grey hair lady who i nicked named Nurse Ratchet from ward 7. I was commenting on how good the nurses were taking care of me and Ms Ratchet said i wouldn't comment to much Buddie your the one who will be paying for the OPeration. I may have just had a tumor removed but we came to heads after that. Her name was now Ratchet and her ward was the cuckoos nest. :rotfl2:
Okay Ms Ratchet i seem to have lost my glasses have you seem them?
What idiot would come into the operating room with their glasses still on and you want me to run around and look for them??
Oh boy this isn’t going to go down to well. If i am a idiot this ward is the cuckoo's nest? So that makes you the head nurse MISS RATCHET!. Next day i was moved to ward 8. The torture ward. The nurses were harden veterans here you got smart to them they came down on you like a ton of bricks. Waaah i wanna go home I was like a baby just put me in a wheel chair and send me home! I was ignored no one listened!
And a old fella must of been in his 80's who was in the next bed to me. The nurses had to strap him to the bed to avoid him getting out and taking a fall. No matter how good they strapped him down he always managed to get away so i nicked named him Houdini the escape artist!
No no you must not get out sir stay in bed.
Whaat! i need to go home.
They Strapped him down tightly, 20 min later i peeked over and see the old fella getting out of bed so i ring the buzzer, nurses comes running in and i point over to Houdini. Last thing i wanted was for him to fall flat on his face and and crack his head open.
And Mr Upton a with a strong English accent who had two massive black eyes from blacking out while up a ladder and fell head first onto the concrete resulting in a head injury (this is his 4th blackout over the years)What were you doing up a ladder? I was changing my flag on our roof. :haha:. He could of swore the head of a duck every 2nd word was the F word. So when you going home? Well Frank they told me 4 days ago i will be going home i haven't bothered asking the pricks! Mr Upton was transferred to Tauranga hospital not long after that. He had a funny laugh and loved it when it was meal time.
Ward 8 was torture there was no air conditioning in this ward and its mid summer here, fans blowing everywhere the worse was when someone had to use the potty we all duck under our blankets till it was safe to come up for air. We all wanted to go home but before we could we had to convince the nurse we can walk, shower and go to the toilet without any help and answer every question correctly.
What year is this
What your full name.
What year, month were you born
Where are you now?
who is the prime minister of New Zealand?
what ward is this?
I knew the questions in order so I would memorized them until another nurse showed up and asked i the questions in a different order making i get it wrong
What year month were you born? December 2013, ah no December 1963! WHo is our prime minister? Mr Waikato hospital :88)
So to all those people ive met over the last days in HOS I hope I never see them again, at least not in HOS but in real life. Im going to go for a walk into town today and buy a Thank you card to send of to the nurses at the HOS and Ms Ratchet who ive forgiven they must get a hard time over the years from patients that they always have their guard up.

Kiwi, I'm glad you can find some humor in it all. Hospitals are a necessary evil IMO. I've been in 4 times for collapsed lung. I get to stay for 10-14 days each time a wind bag decides to pop. I'm stuck to the bed with a chest tube and chest cavity vacuum. I can understand completely your hating the hospital and not wanting to visit ever again. But the drugs are good! :D As for the nurses, I noticed if I treated them with respect the favor was returned. For some, a hospital stay means getting waited on hand and foot. Not the case.
Keep on mending brother!
Not been on Subsim for a while... lapsed into the occasional quick glance now and then.

haha yeah i aqree, like getting woken up every 3hrs to have your blood test taken then told my blood pressure is high i need to rest and not stress out to much.:88) Wait a minute you nurses wake me up every couple of hrs for a BPT and tell me i need to get the BP down! :nope:Are you kidding me!:rotfl2:

:haha: I hear yea. For me taking showers was impossible. There is tube sticking out of my chest attached to rubber hosing that is attached to a box that looks like R2D2 that bubbles. The bubbling action creates a vacuum to pull air and what-not out of my chest cavity. So, showering is not really in the cards. One can get a bit ripe after a day or so. The wife gives me sponge baths. :D
Anyway, Percocet was the pain medicine administered to me. They tried morphine. It does not work for me. I stayed with Percocet. It does make you sleep well.

Ah ha my memory is coming back, each morning i wake up and can remember things that happen over the last few days. Plus im finding the keys much easier now. I should be back to 120 words a min in no time! :O:
Though i still have problem with people first nams so if i can't remember its more How ya going mate.
I forgot to mention about one nurse in my long windy great wall of text post on the characters i met at HOS How could i forget her she was the Angel of Ward 8 can't remeber her name. Blonde, probably in her mid 20's with a strong Scottish or irish accent very Beautitful as well. My little angel. :sunny: Who would came in to work the nightshift wake us up around midnight for a blood test & every couple of hrs after that, so there was no way we were going to get a good sleep, but with her it wouldn't of mattered if she woke me up every 30min I would hear her voice before i woke up so have my arm ready for her to go to work on it, im sorry Frank time for another blood test, thats ok no problem you do what you gotta do. She looked concern and said its high 200 over 138 which is high, high blood pressure is not so bad though when its very low thats a bad sign - high blood pressure could send my brain to do silly things & into a seziure at its worse. Somewhere in the middle is good like i am told. Mine always hit the roof. It hit the roof because i lost my glasses therefore during the day my eyes strained, resulting in headaches + stress + worry + heat = high blood pressure. I did not mention this to her though as i didn't want to hurt her feelings plus i didn't care it wasn't her fault She was our angel of ward 8 taking care of us old farts. But that's the reason i believed it was always high in HOS. You get stressed out in HOS to easy if like me and like to be independent not allowed to go anywhere cant do anything in bed forever day after day HOS will be a drag. If i could escape from HOS i would of, i tried but the main doors were locked. :rotfl2:
Another one not an angel tho but she did freaked the hell out of me one morning around 7am she came in to do my BPT, woke me up and all i saw was this Muslim woman with a veil around her head! I yell out in a shock :oGeeze i thought i had died and gone to Muslim heaven or hell. :haha:
Did a naughty thing this morning i got up around 6 found out i ran out of milk so thought i would walk up the road to the petrol station its just a long straight footpath all the way to the gas station about half a mile should be easy as. I didn't wake my son i'll just txt him instead just in case i get lost. All i have to do is walk a straight line and i'll get there, no problem. Well i got disorientated if thats the word for it. Follow the footpath man! what are you retarded or something! keep walking straight ahead! eventually i made it after what usually takes me 7 or 8 min this walk was a long wobbly25 - 30 min to the gas station stopping every couple of min to get my bearings, then i had to walk back! :rotfl2:

Thursday morning i think i had my 2nd seizure, woke up in a confused state didn't know where i was and with terrible leg cramps as if my legs were going to snap in half that part was freaky i couldn't walk had to sit down for 10 min before the pain went away. My slurry speech is back i notice it when i drank a glass of water and dribbled down my t shirt. Why is my shirt wet? Oh
I think i need a top up on my anti fit pills as they weren't repeats so once the bottle was finished i then have the seziure the next morning. Can't get them till i see my doctor on Monday tho. Heres hoping no more fits in my sleep!
So what do i do on Friday arro, i go cut the lawn as if nothing happened.:nope:
I need to behave more or im going to get an earful from the doctor on Monday. I better rest the head for now on

If anyones interested these are all the meds i take.
Omeprazole 20mg (OME) TaKe one twice a day
ACCUPRIL 5mg Take one tablet once a day
EPILIM EC (200mg) Take one tablet with food 3 times a day
PARAFAST (500mg) - pain killers take up to 4 per day for pain
FELODIPINE Ta 2.5mg ER - take 1 tablet once a day.
Some are for blood pressure some are to steady the swelling of the brain, some to control fits and for stomach & headaches. So im pretty much doped up during the day / night, hardest part is trying to make sense when i talk to people (that would be the 2nd seizure and drugs combined) and my typing i still have to correct it, can never get the keys right.. :/\\!!
There are the funny moments that cracks my son up, when ever im eating i end up with food all over my mouth cause i can't open my mouth wide enough so im nibbling like a rabbit & when drinking it slips down the side of my mouth no matter how careful i try to be. :haha: Hopefully if or when im ween of the drugs i will be back to normal again. :yeah:

Probably last update for a while. Visited radiologist today, he told me there is a small tumor growing. Small enough to slow it down with treatment but not big enough to operate on, this tumor was separate to the main one as i ask him how come surgeons did not take out both at once? To dangerous probably having two holes in my head might kill me so leave it to radiation sessions.
Have to go in on Monday next for another MRI scan to see if it shows the tumor is growing as the last MRI scan was taken just before my main OP. Great more STARWARS peeow sounds ro listen to for 30min :-?.If it is growin then its 60 days mon to Friday radiation Treatment & chemo pills to take straight after! Wonderful  so the tumor is getting hammered most of the day. And repeat next day ... I will be staying at the HOS lodge where cancer patients will be living in. So at least i hav the company. Good news I am allowed to now watch TV and the lodge has internet access with laptops available:rock:. Sorry kiwi is here to stay:haha: But i will most likely be too tired to do anything once i move on to the chemo pills. I was told to expect Fatigue, being nauseated and possible hair lost. Ive had number 1 hair cuts most of my life so i really dont mind about hair loss & will probably get a Kojak look once i return home.
Anyway chatting to the surgeon was really good it was no oh you are going to die he explained everything to me where when i walked out of there i felt okay and knew i can trust this guy to do the job well
If tumor shows no signs of growing then its cut to 30 days treatment and i can go home on weekends. Gotta give St Johns here due credit for driving me around to Waikato HOS and back and will be picking me up on weekends bringing me home then taking me back to HOS again Free of charge,i still cannot drive yet.
Till next time

this small tumor is aggressive! malignant one meaning cancerous. Radiation and chemo is no grantee it will stop it from going nuts. Its name is Glaoilblastoma. A Nasty thing.
Since having chemo ive had all sots of offers, from one patient who has had one to many Radiation treatment :haha: the B17 vitamin the cure to cancer.B17 is banned in America because the FDA? Do not want to test it as it will cost them Millions, more likely it will help FDA lose billions. It is not banned in Mexico i am told and most likely not a cheap treatment either.
2nd option a brother offered to take me to his Church You need Salvation i'll pick you up on Sunday 10:30am we will all bless you. If you die bro without salvation you be going to the darkness at lease you be going to the right place. (the darkness? I thought this place is as close to hell as it gets!:D)

edit forgot to add this list thats given to us on how to avoid brain tumors. A bit late now though!
Causes.
Bad diet
A major event in your life that may have hit you hard.
Alcohol ( no binge drinking one or two shots of whiskey okay)
Mold in homes
Anger for long periods of time like holding grudges thats more a sign the tumor growth has started.
To much drugs even medication medicine, yet they give us chemo pills straight after :har:
To much sun in your eyes :o over long periods. Warning signs pain behind your left or right eye or above your head.
Long periods of staring at a monitor
Years of depression of and on for no particular reason why. Out of the blue stuff is a warning sign.
Non Causes.
Smoking. Yea thats right there are no links to smoking and brain tumors no garantee though with lung cancer or any other so dont restart the habit!
Well being lifesstyle of corse. Excercise, good foods etc.,

Frau Kaleun used the line from the song on purpose, just to be funny. Your reply "That sentence takes me right back to my fav music band" makes it sound like you thought she made up the line on her own, and it reminded you of a similar line.

Hey guys, just a few last words last Friday was sitting at home, I had a bad fit according to my son, where I blacked out, he freaked out and called the ambulance, so they rushed me to hospital in Hamilton.
According to the doctors I have around about 6months to live or longer, depending on my condition.
The tumor was suppose to be, history, but apparently not it has now grown back, which was my fault as I stopped taking the chemo and anti-fit pills because they were making me feel unwell.
My son Micsha has typed this out for me as I am too slow and cannot type or look at the screen. And if I die I have asked him to login to my Subsim account to inform you guys of my passing.
So that's the bad news out of the way. So hopefully the grim reaper won't catch upto me anytime soon :yep:.
Neal can delete my forum account when i hit the bucket :yep:.
Thanks for all the well wishes guys.
P.S. I know the odds are grave, but i still have hope.

A few scriptures, for it's late - but not yet too late
I tell you the truth, a time is coming and
has now come when the dead will hear the
voice of the Son of God and those who hear
will live. (John 5:25)
For I am convinced that neither death nor life,
neither angels nor demons, neither the present
nor the future, nor any powers, neither height
nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of
God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8:38-39)
I am the resurrection and the life. He who
believes in me will live, even though he dies;
and whoever lives and believes in me will
never die. (John 11:25-26)

They are the original files and have been tested and ran through jsmd5m.
GWX3.0 and Gold are both the same.

Oh mann, verdammter Mist!
I was hoping for a slow but steady improvement of your condition, and now this...
I am glad you still have the fighting spirit, Frank. Do not give up hope, man!
I wrote this already in Feuer's thread about his condition: My father's new wive also had cancer and got a prognosis as severe as the one you got now. The docs also said that she would stay on earth for some months, max. She survived 10 years, while still smoking. (I don't recommend the latter - except for pot, which will help you to keep your appetite, though you want to check out about this with your doc)
It is amazing how much the spirit and the will of the human mind can do. It is no empty phrase I am talking about. Besides the example of my father's wife, I worked for some time in a hospital. I saw people with minor injuries die as they just gave themselves up, while others decided to show the middle finger to the Grim Reaper and many got away with this. This was especially observable with the elder gen, which means people who were more than 3 decades older than you, youngster! :)
Sorry for the long text, I know that reading long stuff is hard for you atm, but it has all to be said.
I promise I will drink a Croatian and a NZ beer on you on your bday, even though I don't drink atm. And I hope you can also enjoy one when the big 50 arrives, and also when the big 60 comes! :yep:
Just to be clear, your bday is in June, not December, right?
All my best wishes! :salute:

You're assuming that Americans know that NZ is seperate from Oz. Obviously the ones on this forum are more than geographically aware, but the rest . . . :nope:

What are you talking about HB? Everybody knows that Ozzy has not seperated from Sharon. He said so himself.
Harumph.
