I have two stories for you:
Playing GWX 3 fun game on fairly low realism I recently ended up in a surface gun battle with a British S-class submarine, the last defender of a convoy. I'd sunk half the convoy and the escorting cruiser and two corvettes, so I torpedoed the sub once. I waited about an hour for it to sink and it didn't, despite being half-submerged, so I hit it again with a torpedo. And again (at 200m that time - I thought arming distance was 500m, apparently not). So, out of torpedoes, I surfaced (having never had a surface duel with anything larger than an MTB before) and proceeded to pound said submarine with 105, 37 and twin 20mm guns. After a while (in quite heavy seas) I shot off its bow 3inch and tower 20mm, but around 20 105mm shells, 100 37mm shells and a good 500+ 20mm later it still didn't sink, just floated around in its spilt oil, submerged halfway up the conning tower. I gave up and sank the remaining merchant ships, leaving the patrol with a good 90k tons of shipping sunk, which even for an low-realism game was quite a lot.
During this fight the S-class hit me with no more than 10 20mm shells. I left the fight with 81% of my hull integrity left.
I later restarted that career after getting too close to an exploding oil tanker, so I decided to take my sub to Narvik in Weserubung and sink the destroyer task forces and their battleship, which I largely did. While hiding from the remaining destroyers at the bottom of the deep bit of Westfjord, I lost contact as they gave up and proceeded east. I ran on the surface at full speed to catch up to them. The damaged battleship and two destroyers, when I detected them, were in a gun battle with an AI type VIIC. The VIIC sank one of the destroyers with its deck gun (as it's an AI sub this is all it can use) and, using the unit cam, I saw it take innumerable hits from 12.7mm, 4inch, 6inch and 16inch - yes, that's right - shells. As the battleship and remaining destroyer - which had all its main guns shot off - were distracted I sank them both with torpedoes, having submerged and run up behind them at full speed. But enough of my exploits - the point is, although the VIIC eventually had its 88mm and 20mm shot off, it had been hit so many times by large-calibre shells (I have the torpedo damage effect mod installed) that by the time I sank the battleship and remaining destroyer, it was literally covered, everywhere, by impact marks and charred metal.
Anyhoo, I'm going to take my IXB and play the Norwegian campaign again.
Both of those AI submarines should not have survived a tenth of what was fired at them. And like I said, I saw neither of them sunk. I take 10 20mm shells to the conning tower and forward hull and lose 20% of my hull integrity. Odd thing is, when running in calmer seas and/or against stationary targets, I have had no problems sinking British and Russian subs with single torpedoes. What's going on here?
