View Full Version : Lost at sea? hello?
Well this is embarrassing! I've been a member here for a long time, even longer then my registration date since I lost my original info. I re-upped in '06 and just haven't had anything too say :o
I was a huge I688 and Dangerous waters fan, I also played my fair share of SH2, I believe I found a few opponents here for Destroyer command back in the day and we had a great time, timing out :yep: SH3 was my last real go around and I ended with the superb GWX mod.
I just recently purchased SH4 and SH5 through steam and want to get into the water again and this is still the place, So hello :salute:
Before I go a modding, is SH4 or SH5 vanilla even worth getting tangled up in? It seems 5 is much worse so I'm starting with 4. Any opinions on this?
Welcome back. Get to work scraping the barnacles off the hull. :)

I can't say anything about SH5, but, IMO, you should not waste too much time with stock SH4. You might play around with it just to see what it's like, but before you get involve with a career, you'll want to have a mega-mod installed. Very few stick with stock for long.
:salute:
You should absolutely play SH4 unmodded.
Only then can you really appreciate how great an improvement the mods are. :D

2006?:o You really don't have much to say.
You didn't say what version of SH4 but you must be patched to at least V1.4.
It's playable but not all that great. There are mods for 1.4 but are hard to find. If I not mistaken the Steam download is only V1.3 unless you also downloaded the U Boat Missions add on. This will patch to V1.5.
To really play the game you need V1.5, the U boat expansion and patch.
It adds U Boats but also patches the Fleetboats. All the big mods are now for V1.5. With TMO or RFB SH4 is a very good game.
Don't play SH5 and probably never will but from what I've heard it's all but unplayable stock. The modders have done a lot of work and I guess it's pretty good now.
We will expect top hear from you again some time in 2018 or 2019.:yeah::yeah:

Thanks guys and Magic I'm pretty silent, I think I first came on around the time SH1 was released!
I do have the U-boat addition and version 1.5. After mucking about most of the day with stock, I've installed TMO and RSRDC (TMO version):03: I'll be Setting out on my first patrol at dawn! I do hope to send a report before 2018 .... :O:

G'day Fishy,
I played a couple of careers through in stock v1.4 and a few bugs aside had no real problems. It's good to get a feel for the game before you mod I reckon. That way you've got an idea of what is being changed.
IIRC it was the need fix the dual deck guns on my Balao that got me mixed up in the whole moding caper to start with!

WELCOME BACK! :sunny:
As for SH5, you'll get more and better advice in the SH5 forum, but as Razark said of SH4, give it a try unmodded. You'll both love and hate it. Then check out the mods to see how much it's been improved.

If you want to play SH5, go ahead and accept the fact that you are going to be modding like crazy. Stock SH5 is an arcade-style beta release with a LOT of broken features. The mods are pretty much mandatory, especially if you have a lot of fond memories of SH3 GWX.
