On November 23, 1963, the first episode of Doctor Who was shown on the BBC. The show was about a mysterious traveller in time and space known only as the Doctor, who could change everything about him when near death to survive, and his time machine, the TARDIS, which looked like a London police box on the outside, but was a colossal space ship inside. The show was moderately successful at first, but ratings skyrocketed during the second serial, where the Doctor met his most famous and deadliest foes-the Daleks.
The show ran, amazingly, from 1963 to 1989, by which time eight actors had played the Doctor's seven incarnations. The show briefly returned in 1996 as a TV movie, but only returned as a weekly TV show in 2005, when the BBC finally realised what utter jerks they had been to cancel the show. Doctor Who is more popular than ever these days, and shows no signs of being cancelled anytime soon!

People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but *actually* from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint - it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly... time-y wimey... stuff.

I've seen it. Liked a few things, dislike others. Putting the name of the show in the dialogue one or two times is fine. Making and habit it's a bit annoying and dumb.
And they had to put the face of the actor again in the intro...:-?

I like to paraphrase the legendary American comedian Will Rogers, who said "I never met a man I didn't like".

My version is "I never watched a Doctor I didn't like".

[edit] Here's an interesting take on the current Doctor. I will add that I was ready to dislike Matt Smith based solely on his looks, but I've fallen in love with his performance and Steven Moffat's writing. They make The Doctor all he should be. Given the brilliant versions delivered by the previous two, that's saying a lot.

I thought it was pretty good. Steven Moffat seems to prefer concentrating on the characters rather than the "things" and Matt Smith's transformation from a mood of bitter indifference to his "normal" manic-self was fun to watch.

SWMBO borrowed the available DVD's from one of her friends so we've spent much time with The (older) Doctor's over the holidays. Had watched a couple of Tom Baker episodes when they were new but really had never enjoyed the series until she forced me to watch Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor when the series revived.

Well, that was fun! I just rewatched the 10th Doctor episode 'The Fires of Pompeii'. One of my favorite scenes comes right at the beginning, while the Doctor still thinks they're in Rome. He says "Oh, and before you ask, I had nothing to do with that fire...well, just a bit." This refers to the 1st Doctor, Season 2, when they vacation in Rome in A.D. 64. The Doctor at one point is having a private laugh on Nero, while the sun focusing through his glasses held behind his back set Nero's map for his new Rome on fire. This gives Nero the idea to burn down part of the old city so he can convince the Senate to let him build the new one.

Fun bit 2: When the householder who has purchased the TARDIS asks his name, The Doctor says "I'm...Spartacus." Quickly his companion Donna says "So am I." Of course younger viewers might relate this to Monty Python's Life Of Brian, but that movie stole the idea from the original Spartacus. When the Romans want to crucify the ringleader of the failed rebellion, they ask for him by name. Kirk Douglas says "I'm Spartacus!" Tony Curtis quickly says the same, followed by pretty much all the rebels. Of course the Romans then proceeded to crucify six thousand of them.

Fun bit 3: Lots of in-jokes from both history and the series itself. It wasn't until season 14 of the original series that they even tackled the question of how they could talk to all sorts of Romans and Chinese and be understood. When it happens in this episode Donna wonders what would happen if she spoke real Latin. When a street salesman asks what she would like to see, she says "Veni, Vedi, Vici!" The man loudly and slowly replies "Sorry. Me no speak Celtic!"

Fun bit 4: There is a sisterhood of prophetesses involved. At the beginning one of them sees the TARDIS and runs back to tell the High Priestess that she has seen the prophesied Blue Box. At the end of the episode she dies with her sisters as Vesuvius erupts. When the closing credits rolled it turns out the actress was Karen Gillan - the Doctor's next companion, Amy Pond!

Too much fun! :D

Some sad news folks, I was reading over the weekend the actor Bernard Horsfall has passed away. Bernard Horsfall guest starred in four Dr Who stories, first in The Mind Robber as Gulliver then as a Time Lord in The War Games both in Patrick Troughton ere as the Doctor. He would next appear in Jon Pertwee ere in the Planet of the Daleks as Taron then finally in Tom Bakers ere once again as a Time Lord in The Deadly Assassin.

He played the part of Goth who tried to kill the Doctor in the Matrix taking his orders from The Master. The cliff hanger fight scene seeing Goth trying to drown the Doctor suffered a backlash from Mary Whitehouse's clean up TV campaign for at the time was looked upon as a very violent scene.

Always sad to see someone you're familiar with go, but like many others he had a good long life, so the sadness includes some joy. Also he died more than a month ago.

I just recently watched him in a couple-of-decades old episode of Agatha Christie's Poirot. A fine actor.

They've restored all the missing episodes? I only knew of The Invasion Episodes 1 and 4, some episodes of The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve, and Episode 4 of The Tenth Planet.

They're releasing The Tenth Planet this autumn. I once saw an amateur reconstruction of it on YouTube. It's a brilliant story. All I have to say for the DVD release is...

Oh yeah, that One's going to be amazing, I can just tell. From the sounds of things, they'll be more like the classic Cybermen in this episode. And that's going to be great! Let me tell you a story. Doctor Who had gone from 'that weird show with the jelly baby guy' to 'the greatest show in the galaxy' in just one Christmas special. I couldn't get enough Doctor Who, so my parents loaned Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel for me. I went away thinking 'Cybermen are cool, but where are the Daleks?' Then, a short time later, I watched Tomb of the Cybermen. Although Matt Smith stole the idea from me a while later, I just fell in love with the classic Cybermen. Just look at my action figure collection: http://imageshack.us/a/img40/8950/photoapr04080146.jpg

Most of them are Cybermen. I love those guys.

Anyway, back onto Nightmare in Silver, here's a fan made trailer for it: http://www.youtube/watch?v=73c4i5T0N6o

And here's something to make you think:

Neil Gaiman has a penchant for writing, although admittedly I've only read one of his works and that was his effort with Terry Pratchett for 'Good Omens' but his last episode was very well written and beautifully acted. Matt Smith deserves more episodes like that where he can exercise his talent a bit more.

Nice figure collection, the wife has a David Tennant figure and I have a John Barrowman one, we also have a couple of the RC Daleks and she got me a plush speaking Dalek for my birthday from the sci-fi convention we were at last month in Wales (which gives me the opportunity to post a link to a pic that I took for you while I was there - http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/2635/1006324f.jpg ). 3309. Cold War
234 130413 by Mark Gatiss
One by one submarine crew are dying in mysterious, cold, circumstances. The Doctor realises that a great intelligence is involved but this time he's not using snowmen or yeti. It's the return of the Ice Warriors for us but it is actually a prequel, just like Snowmen was a prequel to the Abominable Snowmen.
Will one of the Ice Warriors become frozen to be found in the future in the Patrick Troughton episode - The Ice Warriors?
BBC Blurb:
The Doctor and Clara land on a damaged Russian Submarine in 1983 as it spirals out of control into the ocean depths. An alien creature is loose on board, having escaped from a block of Arctic ice. With tempers flaring and a cargo of nuclear weapons on board, it’s not just the crew but the whole of humanity at stake!

Could be either or a bit of both:

Clara and the Doctor arrive at Caliburn House, a haunted mansion sat alone on a desolate moor. Within its walls, a ghost hunting Professor and a gifted psychic are searching for the Witch of the Well. Her apparition appears throughout the history of the building, but is she really a ghost? And what is chasing her?

Really? With one more season to go (plus Clara). :O:! Even if he said in SJA that he could regenerate more that 12, I still belive that 12 was good number, so they have to have a actor that beat Tom Baker and his 6 years or more of Doctor Who!

Hummmmm! :hmmm:

He they end the show with the 13th Doctor (normal with the 12 regenerations) they will have a N number of fans saying that it is wrong and the same N number saying that it is right. If they do not and the Doctor have a few more incarnations, a N number of fans saying that it is wrong and the same N number saying that it is right!

Enfim... has I say!

The Second Doctor said he was 450 years old. He also said that barring accidents Time Lords could live forever. The Third Doctor said he had been a scientist for "thousands of years". The Fourth Doctor said he was only 749, not 750. The Tenth Doctor said he was 903, then we saw when he passed 1000.

The "Twelve regenerations" thing was first mentioned when they brought back The Master after Roger Delgado died. This was in The Deadly Assassin, and they said he had used up all twelve of them. I believe that with the Time Lords all gone and The Doctor having become much more powerful, that is now past history. The truth is that he can regenerate for as long as the show is popular. They'll always think of something.

Rhodes
05-16-13, 11:41 AM
The six Doctor says something about 800 years, during the last season, The Trial of a Time Lord, second story, I think.
Funny thing the 2nd saying that, because after the first regeneration, he finds the 500 year journal of the 1st one. Always thought that the 1st had gone to 500 or beyond before dying.
The big trouble with the first 3 Docs and 4th one, it is prior to the Deadly Assassin, the 12 regenerations haven't been mention yet. After that, it became cannon! But if I recall, the City of Death story was after and it have more faces showed before the 1st Doctor face.

PS: talking by memory so...

When Matt Smith starred as the Doctor in The Sarah Jane Adventures he passed some comment he could regenerate 900 times, I may not be spot on with the figure but it was well over 12.

BTW: Don't forget The Brain of Morbius where the Dr Vs Morbius in a battle of minds and Morbius pushed the Doctor well passed Hartnell's ere suggesting this was the Doctor before he decided to pinch a Tardis.

Possibly. Back in 1984 when I saw it for the first time I just assumed they wouldn't show the Doctor's past faces and not those of Morbius, and I've seen it a dozen time since without questioning that assessment. You could be right. Opinion is divided, even among the two writers who created the story in the first place.

It will never be definitively answered.

STEED
05-17-13, 02:56 PM
Morbius's mind drives the Doctor back and Morbius asks, "How far Doctor, how long have you lived?" The face becomes the Second Doctor and then the First Doctor. Other faces appear as Morbius tells the Doctor he will go back to his beginning.

I do agree to the point as it stands it sounds like the Doctor being pushed back and to this day it has never been answered. Clearly on the regeneration the script writers have made changes.

Another mystery at the start of Paul McGann's story we hear the Daleks put the Master on trial and executed him, why? As we know Dalek's don't bother with court cases they go straight to exterminate.

I saw that as tying in with The Evil of The Daleks, the 2nd Doctor 7-parter where he and Jamie first meet Victoria Waterfield. The Daleks are trying to become deadlier by absorbing "The Human Factor". They can't get anything from Jamie so they try to take it from The Doctor. The result is playful, friendly Daleks who want to have fun with the doctor. the two Dalek species then get into a civil war. I liked the opening of the movie for that very reason - the good Daleks won and were now helping the Time Lords.

The story of the Time War really threw me for a loop.

STEED
05-17-13, 03:18 PM
The time war seems to be in a no ending loop and getting ever darker. It dose suggest the Time Lords are not dead but locked in this time bubble created by the Doctor, seems he feared it spreading to a no win situation for all sides, result end of everything. This raises a question, was that criminal?

The doctor in Image of the Fendahl

Doctor, who by this time has worked out that the thing is a Fendahleen, a creature from his planet's mythology, supposedly destroyed when the Fifth Planet broke up. He makes his way into the priory and finds the skull, which tries to kill him. Leela saves him and they go off to the Fifth Planet, only to find that the Time Lords sealed the planet in a Time Loop, making all proper records invisible even to them.
I believe the Doctor called it criminal.

Didn`t he get all 12 regenerations from River when she saved him when he was poisoned in the episode "Let`s kill Hitler?"

I think that during the Brain of Morbius it was not establish yet that Will. Hartnell was the 1st Doctor. But both arguments can be correct and even so a third one, that the Doctor is more ancient and had 12 previous lives (Morbius doctors has one person calls it) and with the "Loombs" idea, he manage to pass some genital material and give birth to a child that will became the Doctor!

Richard E. Grant, for me is a great and fine actor and besides having been the Doctor in one animated series and a few audio episodes, he would be a great Time Lord villain for the show or one for the classic series if we would be in that time.

I thought that they were trying to isolate it so that they could spread the Dalek factor throughout Earth's history. But you are the only one of us here who can actually watch the episode...

I liked the opening of the movie for that very reason - the good Daleks won and were now helping the Time Lords.

Sadly, in a Doctor Who Magazine comic strip (which are considered canon if they don't conflict with other stories), it turns out that the HF Daleks (including Alpha) retreated and founded an underwater city on another planet. They got telekinetic powers, but then a human ship crashed nearby, so the HF Daleks went in to rescue them, and found the Doctor. They bought the humans back to their city and destroyed their ship, wanting to remain a secret. The humans were freaked out by the Daleks, and the Doctor and Alpha discovered that an entity was farming the Daleks' minds for food, giving them their powers. At the same time, the Humans started slaughtering the Daleks, who ultimately commited mass suicide to kill the entity.

The Daleks in the TV movie were the evil, hydrogen breathing Dalek lawyers.

No, you're right. My memory is great for things I need to remember. I've read the book, I've seen it once before and I watched it just a few weeks ago, but I only remembered the funny parts. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22628484 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22628484)

Yes, after the BBC pushed Tom Baker out it went down hill. Of course not all at once but there was a marked increase in story lines that were awful and why the hell did they make them! Peter Davis ere has some clangers but that was nothing to what was to come. Too be fair there were some good story lines just a shame there were not many of them.

Sailor Steve
05-29-13, 11:05 AM
As I see it the main problem was Jon-Nathan Turner. I'll be kind and say he wasn't the best producer the show ever had. In an interview Colin Baker said that even he hated that garish cartoony costume they made him wear. That said, on the whole he did a good job with what they gave him. There were some good stories among the bad, which is true for all Doctors and all eras, including the newest ones.

Rhodes
05-29-13, 11:29 AM
Well, the 80's were the 80's so...
Only saw a few stories after Tom Baker/4th Doctor. And the last ones, during S. McCoy were very bad and (I'm sorry) stupid, also, one can see that final 80's TV series look in the show, 88/89 kind of picture/special effects look, that for me, didn't quite do good for the show!
And the Doctor was Merlin (in another dimension)...
