1. What was the only story to feature one male companion and no women?

*Pained expression* Uhh....

2. What was the only story to have no companions at all?

The Deadly Assassin

3. What was the only story to have no companions and NO DOCTOR?

Mission to the unknown

I didn't look at any other posts :yep:

No, unless you count 'The Two Doctors', but the sixth Doctor had a companion with him, so it doesn't really count anyway.

Well, I was going to wait a full week for someone to get the answer to Question Number 3, but Jim just posted the answer in another thread without even knowing it.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/Massacre_zps0f6b9a8c.jpg (http://s14.photobucket.com/user/SailorSteve/media/Massacre_zps0f6b9a8c.jpg.html)

In Season 3 they had the massive 12-part 'The Daleks' Masterplan', in which new companion Katarina became the first companion to die, followed quickly by Space Special Security Agent Bret Vyon (Nicholas Courtney, who would later play the long-running friend Colonel/Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart) and his sister SSS Agent Sara Kindom, played by the legendary Jean Marsh. After that the Doctor and Steven Taylor ended up in Paris in 1572 for 'The Massacre', in which they had to negotiate the political machinations between the Catholics and the Huegenots leading up to the massacre of hundreds of the latter on St Bartholomew's Day.

They did meet new companion Dodo Chaplet in the last couple of minutes of Episode 4, but she had nothing to do with the story itself except for a possible relationship to one of the older characters.

So now you know...the rest of the story! :sunny:

Of course I'd never heard of any of the previous Doctors either. :O:

I must say I haven't really paid any attention to the show in its modern incarnation, but I just watched the last David Tennant episode before this came on and actually cried at the end. I quite like David Tennant and may have to go look at the seasons he was in.

Wonder if it hints at a slightly darker Who?

Hopefully he'll get Jamie from The Thick of It as his sidekick....wouldn't want to be a Dalek in that universe.

To be honest, I wanted John Hurt, especially seeing as he is going to be playing some form of Doctor in the special. The guy I really wanted, though, was Idris Elba. Elba would have rocked it. Maybe next time, although I think the next one might well be a woman.

I really liked Mat Smith. Would have been happy for him to do another series at least. I got well tired of Tennant towards the end, although that had more to do with the Beeb pushing him on every show before his last episode.

Smith is a great actor, though. Check him out playing Christopher Isherwood in the BBC adaptation of Goodbye to Berlin from a couple of years back. He's brilliant in it.

First impressions? Much like Star Trek: I enjoy it, but I dont find it THAT good.

You'll find they just keep getting better. It's not about a "better" Doctor, but the show doesn't really improve so much as just maintain a consistently good level. After 32 seasons that's pretty remarkable.

The Moonbase to be animated!

http://merchandise.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/coming-to-dvd-doctor-who-the-moonbase/

The Moonbase is due for releases in October with animation from the same company that did the Tenth Planet.

I can't wait for The Tenth Planet and The Moonbase!

Sailor Steve

I have a copy of both, taken from the older VHS releases. The pictures are quite clear and the missing fourth episode of 'The Tenth Planet' is reconstructed using production photos. 'The Moonbase' has two missing episodes, also reconstructed from photos.

I have both still and animated versions of 'The Invasion', and I have to admit that I prefer the still photos. The animation is cute and well done, but it just doesn't feel the same to me.

Nine missing episodes of 1960s Doctor Who have been found at a TV station in Nigeria, including most of the classic story The Web of Fear.
The black and white story sees Patrick Troughton's second Doctor battle robot yeti in the London Underground.
Also recovered is a complete version of Troughton's six-part story The Enemy of the World.

In this case, 11 Doctor Who episodes were discovered, nine of which were missing, in the Nigerian city of Jos.

Nice to see the Doc again!

I quite enjoyed that, as short as it was. Set up the Day of the Doctor quite nicely, gave us the missing regeneration, and an insight into how the Time War affected the rest of the universe, as well as giving McGann another chance at playing the Doctor outside of the audio dramas, which I was pleased to see, I quite liked his Doctor, even though the film he was in was...so-so. Rather nice that it was released on McGanns birthday too! :haha:

Moffat, you've raised my hopes a bit for the big episode...please don't dash them again. :yep:

My hopes for the Day of the Doctor are that it isn't rushed, that the storyline progresses at a good pace, but since there's three threads to it (three Doctors) that it isn't rushed at a breakneck pace between all three, and that it isn't all wrapped up in the last minute with some Deus Ex Machina. We shall see though, we shall see.

I just saw The Day of The Doctor, and I must admit it was brilliant! Pretty much everything a fan could ask for. My only complaint is that like everybody else I had always thought that Paul McGann turned directly into Christopher Ecclestone, and I would love to have seen McGann in the special, even though I love John Hurt. Still, they gave us The Night of The Doctor, so we got to see #8 one more time.

Good story, good filming, good acting, good effects and a couple of great easter eggs. I'm satisfied. :sunny:

Yes, the canon history of the Doctor was rewritten a bit!
I have a comic book, The Forgotten, with the 10th Doctor, action pass soon after the end of his 3rd season. He begins to lose the memories of his past incarnations and each story showed is with one of the Doctors.
The 8th story is during the Time War and he his going for a device to end the war. And even if the comic book is not canon, I and possible several others always thought that the Doctor who fight on the war was the 8th!

I do not know if they thought of Ecclestone for this (and also thing a great homage to The Three Doctors) but since he always cut himself of anything to do with Doctor Who, Moffat may had a great idea and did something quite good with it!

Spoilers:

not to mention the several Time Children, the battles (the weapons, the beams that could be like the stasers [prevented the regeneration] and the lack of time capsules/ships/battleships against the Dales fleets)!

About the Hartnell lines, I once read that, do to his forgetfulness of the lines, they did have the text on holders, suspend above the set, the reason (or one of ) that he normally was looking up when acting. But the special they didn't show that.
I love how he was a precision person, that he need to know what the buttons/switchs do and use always the same for the same action. "The kids would know!" and how he activated the TARDIS, after the new production team come up!

I loved those bits too. One of the running bits I liked was the presentation of the actors to the press each year. It also annoyed me a bit when they did the one for Season 4, with Hartnell, Anneke Wills and Michael Craze. The actor portraying Craze towers over the other two, when in fact he was famously quite short. Watch any of those episodes and you'll see that the top of Ben's head is about on a level with Polly's eyes.

Of course I got the joke, but for a few time, people will still refer to Ecclestone, Tennant and Smith as the 9th, 10 and 11th!

Well, I only notice the mini skirt, legs and face of the actress, not the size of the male actor...!:O:

I just watched all of it over the New Year's holiday, saw bits and pieces at Christmas but since I was working my way through the entire rebooted series I wanted to wait until I got caught up to watch the whole thing. I thought it was pretty good altho I'm not entirely sold on Clara as a companion yet. And overall I thought the 50th anniversary special was much better, but hey - it's hard to beat Ten AND Eleven AND John freakin' Hurt all in the same episode.

Warning: possible spoilers ahead if you haven't watched it:

And I'm still not sure how the whole "the Time Lords are beyond the crack in reality" bit works with what they did to Gallifrey and the TLs in the 50th anniversary special, or with the fact that the crack was already there when Eleven took over... unless what they did to Gallifrey when they went back into the past in the 50th special retconned the future in some strange way. Oh well, wibbly wobbly timey wimey and all that.

Anyway - kind of curious to see what the new guy does with the character.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the Daleks and Cybermen as a villain...buuut, Moffat has shown he's not that brilliant at writing for them. Well, Moffat hasn't actually written a Cyberman story yet. The closest he's gotten is The Pandorica Opens and The Name of the Doctor, which both featured Cybermen, but not as the main villains, so we don't really know what a Cyberman episode from him will be like.

Also, anyone else recognize the design of the red window in Missy's room?
1250

EDIT: As for Dalek stories, I think that Victory was rather good (yeah, I like the New Dalek Paradigm), although that was written by Mark Gatiss, not Moffat.

Pretty much all the Dalek stories after Evolution of the Daleks have had problems. The Stolen Earth and Journey's End show Davros as he normally is, when in Remembrance of the Daleks he's a head in a Dalek Emperor casing (which kinda raises the question of why there's a different Emperor in Parting of the Ways). Also, if the Daleks of the New Dalek Empire were grown from Davros' cells, why do they view him as inferior? And wouldn't he have programmed the Daleks to view him as their leader, like in Revelation of the Daleks? Anyway, apart from that, The Stolen Earth and Journey's End are probably my favourite RTD Dalek stories.

Victory of the Daleks has those new Daleks, which I think are beautiful, but everyone else hates, so I guess it still counts as a problem.

City of the Daleks and Asylum of the Daleks both show Skaro still existing, despite being blown up by the Hand of Omega in Remembrance (or was that Antalin that blew up?). The only explanations given for Skaro's survival are in War of the Daleks, which sounds like a valiant but convoluted story, and the fan animation The Dalek That Time Forgot, which isn't officially recognized as canon.

The only post Evolution stories I can think of that don't cause headaches when you think about them are The Only Good Dalek and Into the Dalek, and even they raise questions (why did the Daleks mass-produce the New Paradigm casings, then go back to the Time War casings?).

Oberon

I'm not confident. Since Moffat has become producer as well as writer, his quality of writing has dramatically declined. The Doctor Dances and The Empty Child were good episodes, The Girl in the Fireplace and Blink were good episodes...but the rest? Pretty sub-par...I once thought it might have been Matt Smith, who I really didn't care for as the Doctor...but now I suspect that it was a combination of both, as despite Capaldi taking over, the episodes are still very hit and miss. Particularly the ones that Moffat has written.
If Capaldi had the same chances that Tennant had, I think he would shine, the sort of scripts and production that Tennant had would be good...but...well, we'll see.

Also, anyone else recognize the design of the red window in Missy's room?
1250

Even the character of Missy...I just don't care much for her, but I'm holding my ultimate judgment until the big reveal.

EDIT: As for Dalek stories, I think that Victory was rather good (yeah, I like the New Dalek Paradigm), although that was written by Mark Gatiss, not Moffat.

Victory...the only part I liked about that was the Daleks serving tea. The Paradigm...well, you're the first person I've met who does like it...and the whole thing of Spitfires in space...nah, it read like a kids comic from the 1950s if I'm honest.

Yeah, there have been some big gaps there...Davros's appearance you can skip over a little because you could say that there was more of his body below the Dalek casing.

Another good point, I must admit I did ponder why the leader and creator of the Daleks would have been reduced to a basement dweller...then again, one of the first things his creations did in Genesis was to turn on him, but like you say, he probably would have learnt and programmed them to obey him.

Victory of the Daleks has those new Daleks, which I think are beautiful, but everyone else hates, so I guess it still counts as a problem.

I called them the Mighty Morphin' Power Daleks...I stick by this assesment, and the fact that they've not been seen again would indicate that they weren't particularly well received.

Agreed, and another, more recent plot hole is Gallifrey itself. In 'The End of Time', the Timelords are shown to have pretty much lost the plot, to consider taking everyone down with them, Rassilion is shown as somewhat of a megalomaniac (although I did enjoy Daltons portrayal of him) and the Timelords are essentially warriors in a war that has lasted a very very long time, the war itself has changed them, and not in a good way.
So, the Doctor pushed them and Gallifrey back into the time-locked Time War, where it stayed...until 'The Day of the Doctor' where it was removed from its time-locked status and put in a form of stasis....where it seems to be ready to be removed from that stasis...or something...because of the crack in reality which was explored in 'The Time of the Doctor'...so if and when Gallifrey does return...if it hasn't already...then we've got a race of Timelords ready to kick arse and rule the universe with an iron fist.

The only post Evolution stories I can think of that don't cause headaches when you think about them are The Only Good Dalek and Into the Dalek, and even they raise questions (why did the Daleks mass-produce the New Paradigm casings, then go back to the Time War casings?).

Indeed...which is why I just wish and pray that they'd drop the Cybermen and Daleks and focus on another race...we had the Ice Warriors and the Zygons come back for one episode before being dropped again, The Sontarans made a brief appearance and are now only used for comic relief in the form of Strax...oh, and two episodes of the Sarah-Jane Adventures.
Draconians have been mentioned in passing but not seen, there is an entire universe full of monsters that the Doctor can grapple with, foes that he has fought before and that fans would delight to see in action again in a greater better format...but, no, it's always the Daleks or the Cybermen, because they are a surefire money earner...it's like Star Trek and the Borg.
Still...we'll see, but I'm not getting my hopes up if I'm honest.

A long time ago a fan wrote a letter to a comic book complaining that the heroine was fighting in high heels, and that was ridiculous. The editor answered the challenge, saying "This is a comic book. In real life people don't fly. If you run around at night dressed up like a bat you'll end up in the looney bin, and if you are bitten by a radioactive spider you'll get sick and die."

So, not having even seen the episode yet, I have to say...It's Doctor Who! Get over it! :O:

So Steve you really think a child can out run a wolf? We're not talking about suddenly she has powers and takes off or anything a long those lines. Too be fair to you Steve post your answer after you seen the episode.:)

The heroine in my story had no powers. She just wore high heels with her costume and fought bad guys that way. It's fantasy. Whether she can outrun a wolf is irrelevant in a show that has any and all sorts of fantastic impossibilities going on in every episode. If that's your biggest complaint, and not the story itself, or the acting, or the directing, then I'm thinking I might enjoy this one. I'll get to see it later today.

Given the writer and the fact that the Cybermen are in it I've not got my hopes up for it, if I'm honest.

Another way to look at it...Oh look another Dalek/Cybermen slam bang over the top ending. I am really getting cheesed off with these villains with there cheesy story lines.
