range in meters I am told "long range" or "medium range". How can I fix this to get meter

I don't think so, because most of the time sonar is used in passive mode : it does't emit the well-known active sonar "ping" sound, which provides an accurate range (and which reveals your presence to enemy vessels....)
In passive mode, the sonar man can only provide an estimate range, based on the target strength's noise he hears, number of screws revolutions per second, etc, etc.

(Sorry for ma poor english, it's not my native language).
