Hi guys.
I am a failure as a man. My wife has made it known that she wants a gaming console for Christmas. Despite my repeated attempts to convert her to the inherently superior world of PC gaming, she has persisted in her desire to own a console gaming system. I like having sex, so I have no choice but to indulge her.
She is mostly interested in, get this, fighting games. Yes, fighting games. She has a strong preference towards Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom and the like. My question is regarding which system to purchase. Is one inherently better than the other? Is there a looming Skyrim-esque problem regarding content with either the PS3 or XBox 360? Or should I just get the cheaper model.
I know that it denigrates me to ask, but which console would be the prefered console for such games? I don't have a freaking clue. I haven't played a console fighting game since 1994 and, frankly, I feel dirty for purchasing one.
Sincerely,
Ashamed in Pennsylvania

Well beeing a PC junky myself my knowledge is limited regarding consoles(only have ever owned the N64) I only know what I hear and some experience with my younger brother having owned the PS2 and PS3
he loved the PS2 but sold the PS3 after a few months...he didn't like it as he did the PS2
Also having played with the PS3 a bit while he had it, I wasn't that impressed either for something so praised.
But as said beeing a PC junky I look at consoles in a different way
the Xbox360 is purely focused for gaming while the PS3 offers some others things like Blu Ray player, browse the web and connect a mouse and keyboard if you want to turn it into a mini PC hooked to your Television.
Library of the games are very similar so the games you have on the Xbox are also on the Playstation except for some of the exlcusives.
so if it's just pure gaming plug&play wise get the Xbox360 which iirc is the cheaper of the two.
But if you want to do it a bit more then I would suggest the PS3
(unless Skyrim is a game you wish to give to your wife then the PS3 is a bad choice due lots of issues reported with the PS3 version)
Now I'm going to take a shower....

Do you own a HD TV?
If so do you own a Blu-ray Player?
Do you mind paying a monthly premium to use the online functions of your console?
In terms of Skyrim-esque problems, as it stands right now, Skyrim is the only one that has DLC problems. Skyrim handles quite well on the ps3(my girlfriend plays it constantly). It's just the lack of DLC that is appalling. Although from the sounds of it, they may be adding the DLC sometime in the future.
As hunter says, their libraries are about the same, however the Ps3 has more exclusives than the 360 does.

It depends on what she likes xbox 360 has something called connect and with that there are games where you actually make fighting moves and they occur in game. She might like that.Other wise an xbox 360 is the best bet really there are tons of traditional mash button fighting games.
PS3 has about the same but its motion based games are not as in depth as the 360s with the 360 you have to really perform the move with the PS3 you dont really.
Does she have friends with consoles? If so find out what they have.

I would recommend the Xbox 360. You can download music, movies, twitter, Facebook, tv shows, games, and YouTube.

We already own a Blu-Ray player and have the PCs for anything web related. Really, she just wants to mash buttons and beat stuff up. She'll probably never play another living human being, so connectivity with other players is not important either.
Thanks guys. I'll just do what I was going to do in the first place and buy whichever one is cheaper during tomorrow's Cyber Monday sales.

Cheapest will be the "Arcade" version of the 360, which has a 4gb(I think the OS takes up 2 of that. :haha:)
Other than that 360 and Ps3 are both 249.99. Depending on whether or not you want to buy games online you should try and find the one with the biggest HDD for around that price range. Typically PS3's come with 160gigs and 360's come with 250gigs.
However if you get a bundled PS3 or 360(which is usually the better buy as you can get its contents for way cheaper than buying each part seperate) you can get anywhere near 300-500gig HDD's with your console.
For PS3 Bundles, Uncharted 3 and Infamous(one and two) are both excellent games. The Uncharted 3 one costs 269.99 and the infamous one is 299.99. Both add 250gig HDDs to the console. Also at the 299.99 price is a Madden NFL and Assassin's Creed 3 bundle with 320gig and 500gig HDD's respectively.
For 360 bundles, there is a Holiday bundle that includes Skyrim and Forza(both great games) for the price of a regular 360.
Although there is no telling on what the prices will be like tomorrow.
I really advise against the 4gig model of the 360 though, while it may seem like a good idea at purchase, it costs 70 dollars to upgrade your HDD if you decide too at a later point. Note that even if you don't want to purchase games, you still need to update certain games, and other games have rather large save files.
The ps3 can be upgraded with any Laptop size SATA HDD, while the 360 needs you to purchase the special Microsoft HDD.
If you do get the 360, you need to also buy a rechargeable battery pack. By default the controller takes 2AA batteries, but you can get the pack that plugs in the bottom for $20. The ps3 batteries are built into the controller so this isn't an issue.
Also neither console comes with an HDMI cable, so you should buy one of these too. I own the $40 dollar Sony ones(which are made out of that flexible metal so they can't be damaged easily and it also came with a rather long USB cord), but any brand will do.

Sorry then I only know what I have heard friends and co-workers say I don't own one myself.I think that consoles are an expensive gimmick if you want the honest truth.

Haha, Tak, you can join the SCSG (SUBSIM CONSOLE SUPPORT GROUP) :rotfl2:
I really don't know what to recommend, because as you know, some games only work for certain consoles (I believe that's still true, right? :88)). I believe both the Xbox and PS3 are great. I wish I had one, I am still stuck with a PS2 :dead:
For me, console games are fantastic for family and group play, sitting on the sofa, relaxed and rocking the controllers with Madden Football, Tomb Raider, Motocross Racing, Splinter Cell, God of War, and some combat games. What I do not care for and have never become proficient at, is fine aiming with a thumb joystick. For serious games where I intend to hit what I'm aiming at, only a mouse and keyboard is any good.
Let us know what you get, and thumbs up to your wife, you are a lucky man.

Actually, I think that you're better off waiting until May-June next year, when the Xbox 720 and PS4 will, apparently, be announced at E3.
Just adding to what's already been said - if she's interested in fighting games, I think she'll find a slightly better selection of titles on the PS3, but really the 360 has enough of them too. As a piece of hardware and when it comes to graphics, 360 is a substantially more powerful machine. In terms of exclusives and selection of titles, the PS3 has been doing really well, especially over the couple of years.
I don't own either, but I've had substantial "stick time" with both systems while staying with friends over the last few years, and both really do have good points and a fair share of features that are on par with each other. To be honest, I'm not sure which I'd take over the other. I think if I were to have only one gaming/media machine to myself, I'd probably choose the 360; but with a gaming PC available, I'd probably pick the PS3 just for the exclusive titles.
In the end, I think you won't go wrong either way - so yep, go and see which one is a better deal tomorrow!

Yeah, but they're probably not coming until next holiday season, and I'm sure Tak wants to have the Mrs. satisfied for this year :D
Besides, with both the 360 and PS3 having dropped in price over the last year, I would not expect any further price drops on them after the next-gen announcements.

Really, she just wants to mash buttons and beat stuff up.
You need some versatility
I would suggest you go with the Kenwood, the buttons are simple to use and as well as beating stuff up it can cut&slice&whip&blend.

I may be pointing this out too late in the game. But if you have more than one gaming computer and an HD tv why not look into steams big picture mode? Most of the fighting games end up on steam and in big picture mode you can play them on your tv with a controller. You would just need to buy a wireless 360 controller and the peripheral needed to connect it to the PC.
You can most likely get a couple fighting games for cheap with steams thanksgiving sale.

Both systems are on 'par' as far as title genres go, with the PS3 edging it in terms of exclusives. I would also say the PS3 is marginally the better choice for 'spectacle' on those exclusives, with titles such as the Uncharted trilogy, Killzone 2 & 3, Infamous 1 & 2 and the upcoming The Last of Us.
The 360 excels in multiplayer connectivity. It makes the process for the player very simple and intuitive. HOWEVER, you pay for this. While, not as polished, the PS3 is 100% free and solid enough not for it to be a concern.
I can't speak for the 360 in terms of content supply but on top of the Free PS3 service you can opt to subscribe to PS Plus and for an annual subscription £39.99 you are afforded 11 Free Full Title games (usually AAA or AA names) per Month (plus other discounted & free content). These are yours to keep until your Sub expires. The package also includes 1GB cloud storage for Save file backups and time automated schedules for system updates and game patches (set it to come on overnight and you're greeted with a message telling you what's been patched/updated).
Multiplatform Content: Regardless of what most fans say, the issue of quality when it comes to this content is split across the 2 devices equally. However, some of the biggest names do favour the 360, ala Call of Duty. Although, it shouldn't really be a huge consideration given that it's a 'swings & roundabouts' deal.
Quality of service: A personal gripe of mine. The SCEA region (US) has an excellent team behind it, communicating well with users, offering great sales and securing releases of the latest titles. Meanwhile the SCEE (EU) region is completely opposite to this and has left me considering moving my allegiance next time around. If you're in the US, you're fine.
Finally, consideration should be give to the fact that Microsoft is rumoured to be releasing their new console next year, with Sony following end of 2013/start 2014. The most important part of this is that the PS4 is likely to ditch the Cell Processor in favour of a more mainstream PC derived processor. In doing so, it effectively results in all PS3 content (disc or digital) being incompatible. Perhaps that's why Sony bought GaiKai but nothing's confirmed.

Given that^, why buy a console at all? Xbox style controllers work fine with windows; You can run a PC on modern TVs no problem; Why waste money in a sub standard computer?
If it's a resource issue get her her own PC/gaming laptop.
Hope U haven't bought console already!:yep:

Because it's more practical.
Hooking a PC to a TV might be easy but comes at a price.
-You render the PC useless to do other things then just gaming (I don't see myself writin a whole piece on the floor, behind a lounge table if I'm lucky that the wires of my keyboard and mouse reach that far.)
-It turns the living room into a mess of calbes (Power, Video, Audio, Internet if you're not on Wi-Fi, Keyboard and Mouse, joystick etc)
-You have to deal with wife and perhaps kids wanting to watch something on the TV well...you either turn off the PC and let them watch or move back to your desk.
So yeah Takeda may have lost his dignity but at least he can keep his PC for himself :O:

-What can a console do while hooked up and running a game? Nothing! (personally my PC does a hell of a lot while running a game/sim windowed on one monitor while browsing etc. on the other!:03:) Pretty sure a console won't do that!

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-wireless-controller-for-windows/jr9-00011#details
-Console style games for PC shouldn't require a keyboard any more than for xbox.
-Lappy should have less wires that a console!
-You have to deal with wife and perhaps kids wanting to watch something on the TV well...you either turn off the PC and let them watch or move back to your desk.
-Pretty sure this would be a bigger issue on a console where you can't run multiple monitors!

Again this goes down to what people do
most people I think tend to remain focused on the game so don't need more then just one screen with the game.
Also I think it does ruin the image of your livingroom a bit, not a pretty sight.
(I know because I once hooked my Beasty to the TV + LCD monitor)
-Wireless; just like xbox/any other computer on the market!
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-wireless-controller-for-windows/jr9-00011#details Sure you can eliminate some things with Wi-Fi equipment if you feel like dealing with batteries all the time (those bastards always run out of juice when you don't want them do don't they?)
-Console style games for PC shouldn't require a keyboard any more than for xbox. But accesing the console game through windows might be a bit of a problem with no keyboard and mouse :O:
-Lappy should have less wires that a console!Same amount of cables actually if you have a console with the wireless controllers.
-Pretty sure this would be a bigger issue on a console where you can't run multiple monitors! :up:unless your on a lappy then perhaps just unplug and move to a table but a desktop, you still have to deal with personal comfort managing the thing and the distracting factor of having the TV blasting some obnoxious disney channel garbage and you try to focus on your game or whatever you where doing :)

Thanks everybody. I ended up going PS3 at Toys 'R Us' website for $249 plus the extras (cable, chargers and whatnot). I'll need to swing by after work tomorrow for pickup, but that is fine because I can also grab some of the things I need for the girls too. I also got the latest Marvel vs. Capcom and the newest Street Fighter (Ultra Mega Super Dooper Street Fighter 17 Hyper Turbo Arcade Edition Volume IX or something like that. Seriously, it's like the longest name ever.)
Hopefully it will appease the significant other. :D

A quick search and it seems like you opted for the 'older' Slim Model with a 160gb HDD.
A good choice. While the newer Super Slims are cheaper, the 'entry' model comes with a 12gb SSD, which is totally inadequate for gaming requirements since some titles (for example Metal Gear Solid) have a mandatory HDD install of up to 8GB, requiring the user to install an aftermarket upgrade if they don't wish to deleting data for every new game. They also have the new sliding cover for the BR drive, while not a huge issue, seek noise is more apparent.
If there's any nuances you encounter during setup or normal use, let us know.
Herr-Berbunch
11-27-12, 07:54 AM
^ But that one is marketed as such, an entry level and cheap to get you started and tease you into buying another drive. I agree that 12 GB is far too small - I only had a handful of games and they took up most of 40 GB. :o
danlisa
11-27-12, 08:41 AM
^
Yeah, it's really only designed for use as a media centre, although any aftermarket 2.5in HDD will up the storage, a 500gb can be bought for £40, which makes the entry level (once upgraded) cheaper than it's big brother. Sony was never good at math.
40GB :o I have 160gb free left from a 1TB. My 'hoarding' is becoming a bad habit. :nope:

I followed your advice for buying a broken one and fixing it (disc problem), all in including peripherals was about £100 which at that time (a year-ish ago, or maybe even two!) and sold it on six months later at a profit after not really playing much. I'd timed it right so I got the Sony 'security cock-up' freebies to squeeze in there.

Result. :yeah: And at a profit. Nicely done.
Just seen an offer for the 12GB Superslim @ £125 :o Monster deal.
Doing the work yourself and adding a HDD, could save you £80 compared to the standard retail 500gb.
