I have the latest ship names update and I have use real ship names enabled.
However I do not get ship names etc at the end of a patrol only the usual
Ship Recognition Manual description.

Where are you looking? First you have to open up SH3 Commander's Patrol Report. After that it will also appear in SH3 the next time you go look.

Yes in Patrol Report I get:

The ship names feature has worked before.
Do I need to do a rollback and then update ship names?

Unless you're a modder you should have Commander set for Auto Rollback. If that doesn't fix it then I don't know what the problem could be.

Ok Thanks Sailor Steve.
I have run into a couple of the MFM ships that do not display the name info. I have not figured out why, most of them do work just fine. Ao002 is one of them that does not display.

Does anyone else have any ideas how to get the ship names to display in Commander? I have several ships listed as just M034B or M024B etc. plus a tonnage.
They are also named like this in the in-game recognition manual.

It is not difficult to add new classes in your Ship names.cfg in Sh3 Commander.
Open the Ship names.cfg in the cfg folder of the SH3 Commander.
Lets say for example that we are looking for the M34B (there is no M034B class)
Use the search funtion and look for M34B
If you find a block starting like [M34B] then the names for that class are there and the problem is else where.
If your search comes up fruitless then:
Option 1 : Add to the block [CLASSMAP] the line M34B=GenericMerchantsAndTankers. This is the easy way
Option 2 : Be another Sailor Steve and do your own research for names.
When you have found some create a new class in the Ship names.cfg starting like this :
[M34B]

The numbers for the cargo type correspond to the line CargoTyps_en=.... in the [text] block

Doing it that way completely defeats the purpose for the Ship Names mod. Part of the idea behind the Ship Names mod was to get rid of the Generic list, adding all the names to models that actually look like the real ship. Every time I add a name to a ship class I look to see if that name is on the generic list, and if it is I remove it. The original Generic list had 3500 names on it. It now has a little more than 600, while my own research has added 13,000 names, all to specific ship classes. Once I exhaust the list I'm currently working from, I plan to go through the Generic list and find where each name really belongs, and put them there. After that there will no longer be a Generic list to link classes to.
Option 2 : Be another Sailor Steve and do your own research for names.
When you have found some create a new class in the Ship names.cfg starting like this :
Every single name I apply involves about a half-hour of research, using several books and online sources. To apply names at random again defeats the whole point of me doing this in the first place. New classes that are added need precise models. This means I've spent approximately 6000 hours looking at ships for this mod over the last five years.
Once I have a new computer that will actually let me run the MFM I plan to go through and rename all the 'MXXX' with class names appropriate to the class. M34B will then come up in the book as something like 'Kirriemoor class merchant'. I have a separate list of which names I've applied, including how close the actual ship is to the model I've applied it to. Until I have a computer that will run MFM I'm unable to test and find out why some ships don't show up in the game I'm kind of stuck. If someone else can figure out I'll be glad to know what the problem is.
On the other hand anyone you give this advice to should be aware of what he's getting into if he wants to do it right. It's not something I just threw together overnight.

Thanks for the insight into how involved your work is. I'll think carefully before altering any files!
I must say though, how impressed I am by all of the work that has gone into the mods I'm using. I bought SH3 years back and then found it almost impossible to run on my laptop. I only recently worked out how to run it on a Win7 machine so adding all the mods has been a pleasure!

I was just pointing out some solutions to the problem.
Speaking of that , I have added pennant numbers to all warships ranging from aircraft carriers to the smallest crafts , which I think adds to the realism.

I assume you mean in the Ship Names lists, and not graphically on the actual ships in the game. Even so, that sounds pretty cool. With a couple of exceptions I've never touched the warships, sticking only to the merchants. I'd love to see what you've done.

That is normal. The actual ship name will not show in the recognition manual unless it is a one of a kind like the Queen Mary, and even then I'm not sure if does show the name, or just the class of ship.
