It's actually not that bad...it's worse.:O:
Has anyone, figured a way to get my crewman to say "Man the deck gun" like he did when I first loaded the game four years ago.
It's also "Man the flak gun" and a couple others. Mostly bridge commands. All I get is "Yes Sir" "Yes Sir" "Yes Sir"... Over and over until the order is carried out.
I have checked the speech files, they are all there. So I really don't know where to look after that.
If someone could point me in a direction, maybe some menu files or anything, I could try to track this down. I just don't know where to look.
Thoughts??
Thanks Mates.

Thanks.
I wonder if this can be fixed. Does everyone have to put up with this bug?
The 1.5 patch is not only U-Boat campaigns but it has some game fixes too if I'm not mistaken.
I would hate to lose that. Thanks for the reply...
D40:hmmm:
EDIT: I checked the files and the crewman speech files "Man the deck gun" "Man the flak gun" are not there!!

My inclination would be to use a sound editor and replace every single "Yes Sir!" with a blank file. It's not something any American sailor ever says in response to an order, and having the officer say it and then give the order to whoever, who just repeats it, is silly. Totally unrealistic.

Hey, this is interesting, I have the same problem too and it drives me mad but I never put it down to the V1.5 patch since I play the various SH's fairly sporadically.

I've got two installs of SH4, one is version 1.4 and the other is 1.5 and they both have all the approiate speech files yet I still have the bug.:hmmm:

Edit: Ooops...both are 1.5 :/\\!!

....But i do definately have the files!

You know, it's weird. I have been through these files over the course of several years many times and always saw those particular files (man the Deck/Flak guns).
Now, just to make sure, I go into the data/sounds/speech(I guess) and veeola,...they're gone! Just those two, maybe more but I don't know right now. All I know is those two are missing for sure.
Now, I'm trying to locate a fresh speech folder somewhere in my bacup files so I can at least stick'em back in there.
My point to all this is, if the crewman can say "yes sir", then dang it, he can say "Man the bloody Flak gun!". Even if it's a bug, this should be able to be fixed because the speech is responding, just with the wrong file. :timeout:
There are other speech files that are there that have never been operational and I don't expect them all to come around, but the precious few that did work, we don't want to lose.
This is my essay for the week. No grading please.:O:
I may ask someone to post the two ogg files if possible if I cannot find them. EDIT: I found them. All the original speech files (it seems anyway). So we'll see if I can enable at least the ones we've heard before.
Thanks :D

Thanks for that castorp!
I did find the missing files. What was even more interesting was that I clicked on the "Man the Flak Gun" Wav or Ogg...whatever it was, and the file played in Media player as I expected. What I didn't expect was it also triggered the extra sounds that play for the mod I have set up. Now, I am using the 'pacific sound mod' (which I think is excellent by the way) and I'm sure it triggered from that mod. My point is, that the sound file is already to go, there is a screwed up menu file or something just as simple diverting the proper sound. Yes, it has everything to do with a rush job on the 1.5 U-Boat upgrade. When I look at these files, they are all intertwined. I'm surprised there are not more problems than this.
So, my daily search is to find the file that triggers the order. I see the 'Command' cfg file has the order, but it does not seem to contain the info to the sound byte.
So, simply, I'm starting from scratch. From the bottom up, I have to find the file that brings the order (button) to the sound file. Hope that makes sense, it's really early in the morning here. So the search goes on...
Cheers

Yeah I definately had that impression too. If it was just a missing/wrong file it wouldn't keep repeating I think? I wonder if the issue has anything to do with the 'varying speech volume bug' as occasionally I do get a really quiet "man the deck gun" after 3 or 4 "yes sir's".

I sometimes get the "yes sir's" after other orders too such as 'battlestations'. I also used to get neverending "ship spotted"s too, now that was really annoying, havn't noticed it in a while though; maybe a v1.5 fix?

Anyway I'm glad you've got the patience to look into it!

Well, I was reading about a fact someone posted awaile back about files being too long. If they are too long it could cause repeating problems in that, or other files. So, I edited some of the "Man the deck/flak gun" files to be under 15 secs
which was one of the magic numbers. (the reason the files are so long is that they contain sound effects after the initial order. More on that in a minute.
Save to say, it didn't work. So, I'm going to edit the files down to simply "Manthe deck gun" and cut it there, so the files will be no more than 3 secs or so at most.
It may still be the time limit problem.
The Man the deck/flak gun files , (in fact most of the files I'm seeing) are for the U-Boat campaign.
My last try will be to install 1.4 again, grab that speech folder, then upgrade to 1.5 again and copy the files or simply replace the speech file comepletly.
I don't know...as long as I keep getting ideas I'm OK. It's when I run out of them, then I'll be sore.
You know,....I can't even find the "yes sir" sound file?! That's weird.

Now that's ironic!:)

But... there's something fishy going here..:hmmm: All the files you're missing, I've got. Yet, we've both got the same bug.

Well, I will look again. I probably missed it. If I delete the 'yes sir' file, I want to see if it get's replaced with anything. By the way, I did get the "aye sir" mod, so I may replace 'yes sir' with 'aye sir' instead.
troopie, do you have the u-boat missions installed (1.5)?? This is supposed to be a 1.5 bug. But why?? I do know that the ogg files are a mess after installing the 1.5 upgrade. However, I can't see that it would be an .exe issue. I am hoping that it's some files that are messed up and can be replaced, including any menu or cfg, anything that would mess this up.
What I may do if I get desperate, is reinstall to 1.4. Grab all the files I would think are neccessary, then upgrade to 1.5 and patch in old files until something happens (like a crash:O:), that's why I want to know if you have the u-boat add-on installed. If you don't then all that would be a waste of time.
Anyway, tell me if you have 1.5, I think you had said that you do, I just want to make sure.

Aye, I do indeed have 1.5(UBM) all 'round. Unfortunately I don't have access to my old dvd's at the mo to try a rollback, but would be quite interesting.

Did u ever get the incessant "ship spotted"s ?

Not yet, I'll have to see when I get to the PZ. I expect to see a lot of Sampans there. We'll see what the watch does with that one. Nothing to do with sound but I put in the SH3 to SH4 ship physics mod and that is marvelous. No more ship on rails. I'm using that Pacific sound mod which is really good, I may do the rollback and take a good look at how the sound is set-up, and as I mentioned, grab everything I can before I replace the 1.5 upgrade.
I don't want to go back to 1.4 because I use GFO and it works best with 1.5.
I think I'm going to do the rollback Friday as I have a day off and I'll have some time to really take a good look at what's going on.

Hey Troopie, I did get a Ship spotted when I ran into a Junk off the Celebes Sea south of Davao. I did not have a repeating problem with this phrase. Weird huh!

All I can say offhand is grab the Speech folder for sure. That is located in data\sounds\speech. You'll want to copy that file into a safe folder somewhere.
Also, there is a 'Commands' file in a folder called 'Commands' I think. Anyway, search for the commands.cfg file and copy that.
Of course, if you want to play U-Boats, you don't want to mess with those files, but, if we're just comparing, it would be interesting to see what differences the files have from 1.4 to 1.5.
I'll be doing this as well this weekend, and I am prepared to sacrifice the install to play the "replace the files until the game crashes" game. I have a feeling though, that there is another file that acts as a mechanism between the command or action (button press) and the speech file (play). In other words, a file that actually brings the action of pressing the "man the deck gun" button and triggering the act and then playing the speech file. I don't see that in the commands.cfg file, I could be wrong though. I would be suprised though if that cfg file did all that.
If there is another action file, some kind of menu file for instance, that is still on my radar list. If you happen across anything that has a referance to speech and command 'keys' for instance, grab it too.
I'll check back as well.

Hmmm, interesting. I'm not getting the "s.s."s currently, but I do have the no-"m.t.d.g."s/"yes sir"s. I updated one install to 1.5 about a year and a half ago and then lost access to that (long story), went back to my other 1.4 install till about six months ago I think, and then updated to 1.5 with new dvd. Unfortunately, coupled with my sieve-like memory and habit of jumping between sims I really have little reference to instance/timeframe/patch release/mod install for diagnostic purposes (am currently running stock though).

I wonder if the "SS"s were fixed with UBM, did you ever get them? (such a similar problem though, makes me wonder:hmmm:)

Do you ever get the variating speach volume issue (present from first stock install for me)? That is: sometimes it's normal, sometimes it is bearly discernable beneath the music/ambient sounds?

No, so far i think my only problem has been the Man the deck gun to Yes sir speech.
There might be another but I can't think of it. My volume does weird things with the radio but that's not a big deal. I never have had the Ship sighted problem so we might have another clue here. Differance between systems.
I am running Win 7 by the way. ASUS lap. Nice little box.

Hmmm... maybe, beyond me to be honest. Maybe I've got a corrupt install (or two?:-?) plus your 1.5 bug? Doesn't sound real likely.

My desktop is:

8GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450
Running Vista .

Actually, your setup sounds a lot like mine. I don't have the lap in front of me so I can't remember the details but it sounds similar
Well, Lazy me. I didn't get the reinstall done yet. I did however use TDW's SDL editor to bring up the files to see if there was conflicts ect. It was pretty amazing. Half of the sounds are green (OK) while half of the sounds show some kind of problem but I don't know enough about the editor to really know what I'm looking at. I fiddled with the editor a bit and succeeded in shutting down all of the speech,.... which really wasn't my intention but I managed to reverse that somehow. At least I know that the SDL editor can be used if I knew what the heck I was doing.
I also found that the Battlestations command also gives me the "Yes Sir" repeat too, so, there are more. I will do an install when I find my saved thread on how to increase the game's ram detection. I used that and my SH4 game now uses more than the 2g ram ceiling so my game boots up in seconds, there is virtually no lag in FPS or anything. Once I find where I put those directions (something to do with modifying the SH4 exe) I'll reload the 1.4 install and grab the folders.
