View Full Version : Culinary Mystery Solved
In the movie Das Boot there is a scene where they are in the officers dining quarters enjoying a dessert that includes cherries . This has been an intrigue to me to know what this dessert is ? Eureka ! It is called Blancmange made of milk or cream and sugar thickened with cornstarch or gelatin , ingredients surely on the list of rations on board a U Boat . Now when I plan a day of Silent Hunter 3 I will have total immersion by having a plate of Bully Beef and potatoes and Blancmange for dessert . The ultimate realism to an ultimate simulation .

Ah... I thought it was some form of hot cereal with cherries in it. Oats would be simple to cook in quiet times, as all one would need to do is boil water and set the grain in it...
As far as I can tell, a U-boat crew wouldn't have Bully Beef, more of an English thing. Instead they would have moldy smoked pork and bland sausage.

2WO peeling and cutting lemon at Officer's Mess desk: "Schimmel ist gesund. Ein edles Gewächs, so ne Art von Hyazinthen. Grade hier soll man sich über alles freuen was wächst."
(couldn't find Youtube clip)
Is the "hairy" meat in the movie, mold?

I'd be more concerned with the fish that winks back at you from the plate :03:

Semolina pudding (Griessbrei) with stewed cherries (Kirschkompott) - even served as a main dish - is still a popular meal. Especially kids love it.
For those who don't know how to cook, they sell it "ready to stirr".

A simple snack?
Heat a cup of milk in your microwave oven, don't let it boil over.
Add two or three spoons (teaspoons!) of semolina in it, two spoons of sugar and one spoon of butter. Stirr well and reheat/nuke it again for a few seconds.
Fresh or conserved fruits go well with it - or even simply some cinnamon.
300 ml milk and 50 to 60 g of semolina and some stewed fruits will make a nice light dinner for one.
The "hairy dinner" is brawn (chopped pig's head) in aspic jelly (headcheese) - with potatoes iirc.

Regular semolina? Or are you talking about the pre-made mix?
And these stewed cherries seem easy enough to make.

Simple regular wheat semolina (or wheatlet) - buyable at your next supermarket.
No "pre-made mix" like the above linked one.
We have two sorts available - soft semolina for sweet desserts or hard semolina for the spicy stuff (Italian noodles i.e. Spaghetti or Austrian semolina dumplings = Griessnockerln).
The cherries may be conserved/canned and served cold in contrast to the heated semolina pudding.

You could always plan a whole patrol in real time - someone has actually done something to this effect :)
