Renown!!!

Let me tell you a little story:

Whew, we had a great patrol. We had gotten into port and on this one patrol we managed to sink 100,000 tons of shipping! :rock:Everyone was talking about us, and we amassed quite the reputation. All the big names were here, Kretschmer, Schepke, even Topp, but everyone was wondering what we were up to. All the chicks dug us and thought we were really cool.:|\\ Everyone was treating us like celebrities.:yeah:

Then it went all went straight to hell.

Chief and I were walking around just window shopping and looking at all the new accessories for our u-boat. Then chief came up with an idea that would be our undoing. He leans over to me and whispers, "Hey Kaleun, check it out! The brand new Schnorchels are here! Everyone thinks we are super cool, so why don't we get our hands on one before everyone else does! Just tell the shop owner who you are and flash him a few RenownBux™, and he'll hook you up no problem!" So I took his advice, I got the Schnorchel and then we went crazy! We partied like rockstars for three whole days. It was totally off the hook.:woot:

Well, we woke up from that binge with our brand new, shiny Schnorchel intalled, and now...everybody hates us.:wah: It's like our entire professional rep just disappeared. :oops:Nobody wants to talk to us anymore, and there are rumors getting about that BdU may even demote me! What's up with that? :timeout:Guess I better get out on the high seas as soon as possible and sink some more shipping, then maybe they'll let us back into port again. Who knows maybe they'll even think we are cool!:arrgh!:

If this story seems absolutely unrealistic to you, then join the club. I hate the concept of renown and I don't think that decisions were made on u-boat accessories almost entirely on your coolness.:/\\!!

So it seems that you are essentially faced with two models. The original idea, where you amass renown and then use those points to "purchase" accessories. Or you can go down the NYGM route, where the accesssories cost no renown and only time. The former is just not realistic. The latter is more realistic, but difficult to implement realistically. It is very tempting to just max out your boat, which isn't necessarily realistic either, as sometimes production couldn't keep up with demand.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a compromise? Some way to work accessorizing the u-boat, where I have access to accessories at appropriate times, maybe in such a way that they are assigned randomly and/or at least limited in some sort of reasonable way?

I'm really looking for some ideas at this point. I can't think of a way to make this realisitic given the system we have. Maybe some sort of outside spreadsheet or program that gives you a random set up to let you know what is available at the time to be put on your boat?

Any ideas are welcome.

How about there being a limited amount of upgrades?
i.e. if you buy 20 Acoustic torpedoes you can't get walther torpedoes?

I play GWX. I never spend any renown. On anything.

But that's just me.

The only thing that comes to mind is knowing that your rank is tied to your renoun, and if you do not want to be demoted, you can't spend all your renoun.

P.S. Love the story!

A simple way to get around Renoun. Go into SH5's main folder/CFG folder/Basic folder and edit all renoun to 0. But make sure you back up the original Basic cfg file first. Then you can choose when you want an upgrade or not, and not have to worry about renoun.

I look at it this way. Uboat commanders never had to pay for upgrades, weapon improvements, or ammo and torpedos. So why should we have to. I try to keep any improvements close to the time they were available in real life back then. And sometimes I say the hell with it and use whatever I want, no matter what the date is where you are in the sim. ;)

Actually this is exactly what I do, but I just feel guilty, as some u-boats didn't even have schnorchels until December '44. It is too easy to "cheat" and just max out the u-boat all the time. I just wish there was some way to make my options at any particular point in time a little more realistic. Even if there was some way to determine a % chance of getting a certain item by time during the war. That would be ideal, but I don't know if there is anything that gives a complete picture as to what each u-boat was outfitted with at a particular time. I know uboat.net has some of the info, but not all of it.

Thanks for the ideas guys, but it just seems that all the ideas still run along two lines: either were stuck with the renown system we have, or we just blow it off altogether. Is there any other ideas out there?

HW3's solution is probably very close to being realistic, but unfortunately, you are just locked into GWX's parameters, and I'd really like to vary it up at least a little bit.

Good idea!

I kinda agree maybe a mod that makes you apply for an upgrade and command may or may not give it to you? Or every upgrade has a advantage and disadvantage that way each other out?

I think the file to be edited is Delta renown ,I only do this for a new boat-
realistically unsuccessful Kaleuns were"nt given the best equipment.
