Greetings,
This is neither a question about gameplay nor modding but I hope this is the better place to find an answer.
Are the masthead heights for the various ships chosen randomly?
I know that sounds a bit shocking but if I might explain. Go to the recognition manual and select, for an extreme example, the Nipiwan Park tanker. The quoted mast head height (MMH) is given as 22.4mtrs. Looking at the diagram it can be seen that the masts are approximately 14mtrs high. That’s almost 30% difference.
Now if I sight this ship on patrol is it depicted (?) to the same scale as the drawing or is it stretched in scale to have masts at 22.4 mtrs. Is it relevant to how I get the correct range? I suspect the answer will be that the figures in the recce manual are irrelevant and it’s all down to the maths in the AI. But I would like to have people’s thoughts on the matter.

In short.. No!
There are a few mods around that have accurate mast heights, but the story goes that the navies did not have accurate information on most things - especially mast heights.

A more accurate way of measuring would be a AOB + Ship length, but determining good AOB takes a bit of practice. :)
