Hi Guys
Just wondered what kind of depth is safe for something like the porpoise class i went down to 300 ft as a test but didnt fancy going any deeper lol
Your thoughts as ever are welcome

look at the depth guage, once you get to the red area (360 i think) then you are too deep so stay above it, i never go below 300 and if you have damage i wouldnt go below 200-250 depending on how much damage you have.
gato and balao can go much deeper to 600

When you get a new boat, test it. Be sure to save, then dive until the boat starts to crush. You can tell because you'll hear a sound like glass breaking. Watch your depth, when you reach that depth, remember it. Reload and go on.

Cheat! Lol

Cheat, sure, but one which ought to be encouraged. I am pretty sure there is a random factor in the game's calculation of crush depth. So someone who relies on a "tested" crush depth could be in for a nasty surprise. :D
Computers are purely deterministic. Computer sims don't have to be. That makes them entertaining.

No random factors per say, cept damage, even minor can effect crush depths. Mods also set crush depth differently.

per say
Per Se: By, of, for, or in itself; intrinsically [Latin]
But I agree. The only way to have random crush depths is to use a mod, and the only ones I know of that randomize crush depth are for SH3.

Ducimus has it in TMO, but not to the extent of the SH3 Mods. But crush depth is different for the different classes of boats.

I was not aware of that. Glad to find there is one. Thanks for the heads-up.

Just remember if you are at maximum depth and have flooding-well you are finished pretty much. And IJN depth charges have no threshold for maximum depth-unlike in real life which I believe was 300 ft or 90 meters.

When they (the Japanese) found out that American subs were diving deeper than their depth charges were set for, the Japanese modified them to go off at deeper depths than they previously allowed. Which wasn't that much of a difficulty for them to do in reality.
And that was all thanks to a US politician shooting off his mouth to the newspapers. What a clear cut case of treason as it cost the American submariners much.

No trouble, although, it is not as variable as the SH3 mods, you can go way passed the red line on the depth gauge "test depth" marking like the real boats did. What is the maximum? Well, lets just say, if you do find out the crush depth of your boat, you won't be returning to tell others just how deep you could go.
I don't like doing it, but I have had a balao class boat to the 700ft mark once, and was able to surface again. Quite the nailbiter in the meantime though! I had 7 DDs trying to ruin my day. But that's what I get for being over-confident on attacking a task force and there was a convoy only a couple miles beyond it. So when I tried to dive under the taskforce to use the ships as a screen, and came out the other side, I was suprized with one of those (OH H-E DOUBLE HOCKEY STCKS!) moments.
The only thing about diving down to 600+ feet, you have to increase speed to maintain depth. So keep your speed to 3 knots minimum at those greater depths. The one time I went to the 700ft mark I think I had to maintain 5 knots and getting back up again took some effort.

Has what in TMO, random crush depths? I thought different subs had different depths, but that the depth of each is basically fixed, cept it may take you awhile to figure out your dead if you cross that line.

The ability to go beyond test depth. The different boats do vary as far as how deep you can go, but you are not limited by the red line in TMO.
