View Full Version : [TEC] How to use TDWs Patcher

Trevally.
08-26-12, 11:35 AM
*****This post is being updated due to TDW making his patcher remember stuff - so no need to throw it out each time. I will update the how to soon. Remember and check out Volodya Rus version that is up to date with the new patcher*****

UPDATE 17/07/2013
Please see here for Sjizzle guide for the new patcher http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=205620

First off - stop here if you are playing SH5 through steam - the patcher will not work with the steam version of SH5.exe

Edit: before starting, see post 2 about backup files

Ensure you are using v1.2 of SH5 (check by looking at the top right in the main menu)

Step1 - get the patcher
Download the newest version from here:-
LINK (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1621039&postcount=1)

Save it to your desktop
Extract with 7zip (or other) to desktop
http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/4689/26117297.jpg

Step2 - make a mod:up:
open the folder that was created by unzipping the download
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/3908/96230800.jpg

copy these files from C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5
***these MUST be stock files (21/04/2010)****
SH5.exe
SHSim.act
SHCollisions.act
Paste them into your folder
http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/2586/89606082.jpg

Step3 - add to jsgme
Take the folder you have just made and place it into your MODS folder:-
C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS
Run jsgme
right click on the patcher folder and select "Explore"
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/4498/22865506.jpg

Step4 - use the patcher
double click on "GenericPacter" to open it
select file - open
Point it to - C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\TDWpatchv1.067
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/4260/84777510.jpg

select "TDW_SH5_Patches.s5p" and open
point it to the folder
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9239/58305373.jpg
say ok to all the warnings:D

right click and enable all the patches you want to use
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/214/27830858.jpg

Do the same with "TDW_SHCollisions_Patch.s5p" and "TDW_SHSim_Patch.s5p"
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/5227/27351157.jpg

Step5 - install
use jsgme as normall
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/658/27962607.jpg

When a new verion comes along (as they are sure to do) - just unistall and delete the folder and make a new one following the steps above.

Thats all folks:yeah:

Or not quite all - please also see this vid from 9thinfSword:up:

It would be good practice to keep a copy of these files in a safe place before editing them.
All from the stock game.

Thanks Magic:up:

I think the render patches stop some of the weather effects that may cause some issues with stuttering in the game (water splash on scope lens etc)

Also - can I add a link to your download for fresh SHSim.act & SHCollisions.act files:06::)

See here by TDW

Interesting :hmmm: Will have to read over and see if it applies

On another note I found the main rendering loop in the exe file. I'm making a 'Render' patch that will allow you to:
- remove posteffects
- remove water droplets effects
- remove water leaks effects

These would mainly be used for troubleshooting but Sober may have an interest in the water droplets one. Maybe it will cure his smoke problem :06: If it does it will be some good feedback so I can poke around more in PostEffects act file and maybe see why.

And the post here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1916571&postcount=689

Quick question -

Tracking the patcher will not work through the Steam version. I usually download my games from Gamefly. Will the patcher fail with any DL version of SH IV, or strictly with the Steam and Steam only?

I started having weird things happening after downloading last few mods; and it took a couple of days for me to remember things I had read in "modding for beginners" area. So, after reading everthing again this day, I saw a couple of patches that might take care of the "weirding". So, I downloaded Depth Keeping and TDW_Genericpatcher_v_1_0_74_0.:salute:

However, before I inable this genericpatcher, I have a couple of questions. Is all one has to do for all of the patching to work, is enable all the "change" steps to yes(true??whatever), for all this to work; then of course enable via JSGME??? I see an off-shoot page by DW, where a whole bunch more of things to change(which is mind boggling to me) Is this part really necessary for a newbie????:hmph:

Lastly, does one have to start a new campaign??Can one Start saved game from bunker?? Or a saved on open water?? after adding this patcher??:-?

Thanks,

MN:yep:

Will the patcher fail with any DL version of SH IV, or strictly with the Steam and Steam only?Sobers Mega Mod instructions states one needs to have the DVD version of SH5, but you only mention Steam. I got mine as a DL from Amazon and I was wondering.....?

Update
It appears that Sober is right and that one must have the DVD version. Assuming I have followed the instructions correctly, I get "EXE Version Error" even though I do not have a Steam version. I anyone who knows about this could comment it would be appreciated. I'd be happy to discover that I've made a mistake.

ARGH now I know how my father feel when I teach him simple tasks on a computer . He freaks if I don t do it EXACTLY the same way next time.
Anyway. I found the patcher and patched my ass off after promted with path.
I never did this:
copy these files from C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5
***these MUST be stock files (21/04/2010)****
SH5.exe
SHSim.act
SHCollisions.act
Paste them into your folder

But it seem to work. is this only if you want it via JSGME?
and can I put this file: (from readme) after I ve patched or before.
AI_Crew_Damage_Control_Revised_Zones_cfg_Based_On_ FX_Update_By_TheDarkWraith:
- revised zones.cfg file to allow flooding to start much ealier. Will get much more listing with this. Should only be used with Crew AI Damage Control patch enabled. Based on FX_Update's zones.cfg file.

The other files from Mods was only for testing right?

There're some 'damage control mods' in the archive. Should I use them if planning to play with 'FX Update'?

Godd day !

First of, thanks a lot for your work, it seems to be huge !

However, I have a little problem when trying to install it.
I'm doing it all as your tuto, but when I try to install "TDW_SH5_Patches.s5p", after I've clicked ok to all appeared window, it shows me that error message :

http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2013/03/1358255405-1.jpg

It might help to know i've never installed any previous version of that patch, and after a quick search, I've been unable to find older version.

Could someone help me ?

Thanks, have a good day.

Let me guess, you have Steam version of game? If so, you cannot use the patches on the .exe file. You can use the patches for the act files though.

Hello :)

Thanks for your fast answer !

No, I don't.
I've red that was not usable with steam version.

Also, as i've red original files were needed, i've reinstal my SHV and I didn't patch it (with official pacthes I mean). Could it be the poblem ?

When you start the game and in the main menu screen does it say v1.2 in the upper right corner of the screen? If not, you are not patched to v1.2 from Ubisoft. You have to be patched to v1.2 of the game.

That's what I wanted to say, I'm 1.0.5, I did not apply any official patches. I thought "stock files" meant 1.0 file. That's why I've reinstalled and didn't run any updates.

I'm going to merge it so :)

This is a great tutorial but I have a problem. When I try to select "TDW_SH5_Patches.s5p" and open, pointing it to the folder, I get this error.

Error reading patch file C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\Mods\TDW_GenericPatcher_v_1_0_74_0\TDW_SH5_Patch es.s5p.
Exception is:
Exception while reading new sections. Exception is Could not load file or assembly 'System.Core, version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

I had not installed any previous patches. At this point I cleared all my mods out and also tried a clean install of the pater itslef to make sure everything was where it should be. All appears to be correct except I stil get the same error message. Also yes I am using v 1.2

I just updated Net framework to 4.5 and the result was the same. While trying to sort this out I decided to try to work on getting the NEW Ui mod to work TDC 7.1. When I install that with no other mods installed I run into trouble on the Game loading screen. The progress bar gets to about 30% and then it CTD. Very frustrating! When I was trying to learn my way around I was able to load other mods and use them with no trouble.

I just updated Net framework to 4.5 and the result was the same.

You should install also 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2, 3.5 SP1, 4.0 Extended..
You shouldn't update anything.. these are different versions and you need all of them..

Try it and then inform us about results..

Success!! Thanks for the help. I downloaded all the .Net stuff and now the patcher worked as did the NEW_UI mod.
The worst part of being new to something like this is having to get a lot of help and not being able to contribute anything in return. Hopefully I will be able to give back in some other ways as I continue to ask questions.

No, it is not necessary.

however a lot of people do, as it is much easier to deactivate the patcher when the new version comes out: instead of manually disabling all the patches from the .exe file, you can just disable it with JSGME and apply the new patch.

If you follow tha step in the first post - it will show how to use TDWs patcher and make your own mod file for it. This way you can move it in and out of the game easy.

Hello Trevally,

I get an error-message after i clicked "ok" to edit the "TDW_SH5_Patches"-file, so i cannot open the file.
If you have any idea how i can fix it, please let me know.
This is my first post here and i want to appreciate the great work of you and all the other captains around here !

Thanks

First off - stop here if you are playing SH5 through steam - the patcher will not work with the steam version of SH5.exe

Edit: before starting, see post 2 about backup files

Ensure you are using v1.2 of SH5 (check by looking at the top right in the main menu)

After a number of problems I've now got the patcher working!:)

I did a clean install and for some reason it hadn't auto-updated. Did the manual update to 1.2 and now all is good....

Indeed, I have the very same problem.
Made a clean install of SH5, followed instructions just to get this message
Using the latest TDW GenPatcher 1.0.94.0

This warning/error screen says only one thing - the game has not been updated to version 1.2 :yep:

What do you see in the upper right corner in the main menu?

Have you used earlier patcher's versions?
If so, have you disabled all changes of old version before using new one?

Also try this - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1926440&postcount=2

Yesidid a clean new install of SH5
>But i think that the error comes from the irretating discription "select TDW_SH5_Patches.s5p" and open, point it to the folder", it should be precice by saying that you have to choose the TDW GenPatch folder inside the SH5/MODS folder, and not the one that pops up first when the "select path to sh.5 exe"-window appears.

But here is another problem

When i activate the TDW gen patcher via Jonesoft GenModEnabler
and start the game there comes the message:

Procedure starting point
"?BeginMultithreadedUpdate@ParticleManager@@AEXXZ" was not found in DLL "Particles.act"

I even deactivated all changes in TDW_GenericPatcher_v_1_0_94_0 and deployed it again
but to no avail.
Deactivating TDW_GenericPatcher_v_1_0_94_0 completely via JSGME and the game starts, weird

Looks like i was wrong because the first error message is back again:/\\!!
What is going on here...

1.stock sh5.exe SHsim.act and SHcollisions.act i put in the just created TDW_GenericPatcher_v_1_0_94_0 folder
2.this folder i put into SH5/mods
3.via JSGME i click "explore" and start GenericPatcher.exe
4.File->Open-> TDW_SH5_Patches.s5p (click open)
5. window "select path to sh5.exe" appears and then?????
I tried the Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\SH5.exe and the
Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\TDW_GenericPatcher_v_1_0_94_0\SH5.exe,
both with the same error message

V 1.0.113 is a "major" release, as it changes the way the patchers are handled.
But the operating mode stays the same.
Better to enabled the Generic Patcher as a stand alone.
In the root folder shown in your post, create a new folder "MyFilePatched".
Copy all the stock files GP expects to find in this folder : sh5.exe and all the .act. (make a copy in a safe place too...)
Run GP, and give him the path : root\MyFilePatched\ when it asks for files path.
Apply the changes you want.
Copy the resulting files in your Ubisoft\Slient Hunter 5\.
That's all.

Just to make sure :) After I edited all files he needed I don't need to enable it with JSGME. I just copy and replace files I edited back to my game folder where they belong?

@Melcorn : exactly :up:
Nonetheless be sure to enable also the Mods (standard JSGME this time) which are correlated with the options you choose : for example the torpedoes mod.

Great post. I had exactly the same problem - recently bought boxed version of SH5 (I had Steam version before), patched everything according those tutorials from 2012, but hydrophone bug was still there. Was about to give up, but apparently I'll be sinking some tonnage today. :arrgh!:

Quick edit: did everything as told - copied all those files and everything, modded them using GP, then pasted them into game folder and BAM - I hear ships, but don't have them displayed as either unknown, merchant or warship.

Another quick edit: apparently managed to resolve the issue.

Would it be possible to update your original thread to match the latest version of Generic Patcher ? I'm trying to follow instructions to install v1.0.122 and nothing matches. Furthermore, you can't install it as a mod anymore because it will conflict with NewUI mods (both modify same dlls), therefore the whole section about loading it as a mod using jsgme has to go.

Having to dig down to the last posts in the thread to find this out was not very intuitive...

That's incorrect. You can install it as a mod (the patched files). The app you never want to install as a mod. The files it patches yes you can install as a mod.

If you create a folder in your MODS folder called Patched Files or something of the likes and you place all the files the generic patcher is going to patch in there and then you point the app to those files then you have just made a mod out of the patched files. Now you simply enable your Patched Files mod and voila, you have just replaced the stock files with the patched ones. When you want to return to stock game you disable your Patched Files mod.

If you want to test Patches without truly committing to them then enable your Patched Files mod, point the app to your \Silent Hunter 5\ folder for each file, enable/disable patches wanting to test. Play game. Don't like the patches? Disable your Patched Files mod and changes are gone. Repeat process.

Then why did you say in another reply that you couldn't install NewUI + Generic Patcher as a mod because it touched the same dlls and conflicted together? I tried it and it gave me warnings about that when I installed the mod. You're the one that told me to install the app as a stand-alone? Did you not understand what I mean then?

This is what you wrote...

Ever heard of the phrase DLL hell? It's what you are experiencing. My UIs mod contains DLLs that I wrote. The Generic Patcher contains DLLs I wrote. They both share 2 common DLLs. You can't let one overwrite the other's DLLs (they could be different versions). That is why you need to use the Generic Patcher as a stand-alone app and DO NOT unzip it to your \Silent Hunter 5 folder. Place it on your desktop, create a new folder for it, whatever just don't place it in your \Silent Hunter 5 folder.

Did I not understand correctly?

You're totally missing the point. You don't include any files of the app in your mod (Patched Files). You include the files of the game the app works on (sh5.exe, shcollisions.act, shsim.act, etc. etc.). If you are placing any of the apps DLLs in your mod then you are doing it completely wrong.

The DLLs included with the app are support libraries for the app only. They should never be used or placed in any mod.

I get it now and I'm in the process of doing it correctly (I think), will try it again and see if that works. For what it's worth, I understand what you meant now, but it wasn't obvious (to someone that doesn't know the app) the way you phrased it first. I still think there should be a simple set of instructions bundled with the Generic Patcher however. That would have saved me a lot of hours. If what I'm doing now works, I'll redo-it from scratch, take screenshots step by step and write a new install guide for it. Others deserve as much.
