I returned to Sh3 this week after quite an absence, my original copy broke and was useless. However, a new copy put things right and GWX3 completed the installation.
But I found this little tool, it helped me understand the horizon from the turm lookout position. The 16 Km horizon may proove optimistic after fiddling with this.

Actually the 16 km is rather pessimistic, since the distance to the horizon is irrelevant. Don't forget to calculate the height of the target ship's mast top, plus your height. The height of a Type VIIc is listed as 9.6 meters. I'm not sure if that's the height to a raised periscope on the surface or to the top of the bridge rails. Assuming that your eyes are only 6 meters above water level, the horizon is now almost 9 kilometers away. If the target's mast height is 30 meters then on a clear day your lookouts will be able to see it from a distance of 21 kilometers. If it's only 20 meters high you'll still be able to see it from 18 kilometers.
Also don't forget the smoke, which goes a lot higher than the mast.

Here are a few facts I found and messed with to come up my view. I know in this digital age all things are possible, but water mist in the binoculars, sea mist, glare, light fog or even a lapse in concentration and I could unstand a lookout missing that mast top even on a clear day. Sh3 spots a ship at say 4500 meters in fog, the only reason you know it's there is because the digital uzo tells you by lighting up a little triange when you scan the horizon, but dam Sh3 is good, heh.
