View Full Version : CTD from time to time

Hi all,

during a patrol I get 1 - 3 CTDs. But I cannot determine why. Memory isn't a problem. The game runs quiet well on my Win7 with about 2.2 Gig allocated RAM.

Perhaps my MOD-Soup is a little bit large. :D

Send TDW the dbgview . I know what it is . I bet you can still play from the last save on restarting .

Seems to me like CTDs are often caused by loading up too many conflicting mods and/or trying to reload a saved game after you've added a new mod to the list. Don't know if this is the case here.

... trying to reload a saved game after you've added a new mod to the list.

:hmmm: to avoid this error, I have had reinstalled the game, deleted all saves and had begun a new Campaign with the following configuration:

Harbour_Addition_Environment_Enhancement MOD v0.5 - Open_Horizons
OPEN HORIZONS II_full v1.9

Do You have a link for creating a dbgview, please. I don't know how to build one. Thanks.

When you have TDWs UI, goto -
C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\data\Applications
and run Dbgview.exe

Then load your game and save game.
When CTD happens - look at the Dbgview prog and save file, then upload the file to a fileshare and give link.

Or copy and pasted the screen into message or post:up:

In my experience, this was the case with SH4. But with SH5 I have gotten random CTDs all the time, with different mod setups, and different new installs of the game...

Thanks Trevally :salute:

But this game, I wonder, I have played about 4 hours without a CTD. :timeout:
It seems, that the sh5.exe knows if Big Brother is watching her ....

I have a very similar problem. A complete fresh install (actually about 10 of those over the last few days) and following Sober's mod list/order to the letter. I delete the save games folder as a matter of course, run the game and the saved games are actually THERE if you look under "Load Game". I still get the saved games synching with server notice even when I am NOT online. I've tried starting a new career (exiting from the tutorial, modifying the completed tutorial to true, etc) and when I try to go back into the bunker to pick up where I left off it CTDs just as the bunker screen is opening. Driving me nuts! If I run a saved game (remember I already DELETED the save folder but they appear from somewhere) it'll run the saved game to the same point every time and CTD. I've tried activating mods a few at a time and it seems OK till I put TDW UI 7 in. Next trial is to leave out OH, have TDW UI in and see what happens. If that doesn't work I'll try reversing the order of TDW UI and OH. At the moment (after DAYS at this) I'm am totally baffled

When in the bunker exit and go to game options\difficulty settings
Go back to the bunker
Click on the technical officer and make sure you can choose torpedo loadout etc
Click on the flottilla comander and once in the mission briefing press skip and click on the baltic mission (click square)
Make sure you get a patrol area appear on the map
Exit the mission briefing
Click on the flottilla commander again and accept the mission
You must get a loading screen before you are placed on the sub

Click on automation button and choose harbor pilot if you want a pilot to take you out of the harbor
Click on the red aquare in the middle of the heading bar to bring up the compass and drag the compass into a good position
You can click the 1XTC when messages appear off or on , it is to the right of the clock

Absolutely! That's what's blowing my brain, Sober. I've had the same thing (wait for this one) with the PC PHYSICALLY disconnected from the Net. There HAS to be a hidden away save file somewhere. I just checked the save folder again and.....................there they are..................four saved folders.........I'm going off my trolley here!

Do I HAVE to put OH 1.9 after TDW UI 7.1?

Dont worry about them , when it says syncing it is syncing with the ubisoft game launcher .

The mods have to be in exactly the order i have on my mega mod list .
Do you use the MEP file so that the mod enabler auto loads the mods in the correct order ?

I'm gonna Reinstall for he 12th time, put in your mod list in order then follow your last post. I'll let you know what happens......................if you hear screams, you know the score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's been running for weeks perfectly. I decided a few days back to update to UI 7.1 (from 6.9) and use your (excellent) mod list with a whole fresh set-up. That's when all Hell broke loose!

Doing that now. Can I leave the likes of JSGME, the MODS folder and TDW's bits and pieces in the directory if I uninstall? I usually take everything out before re-installing

The MEP file fails with a memory exception fault, so I put them all in by hand.

The Validator comes up with a couple of errors (Data/Land/AsianVillage) so it might be OH that's corrupt. Validator also can't find saved campaigns.

Anyway....................I'm about to try starting a new campaign and do the in/out business to set up OH properly. We shall see!

So much for that!...........................It crashed this time before it even loaded as far as the main menu! Back to the drawing board

ANother fresh installation...............Patched...........mods inserted. Start a new campaign, exit after the first animation stops, change history to "true", start a new campaign again, get the "skip tutorial" choice, opt to skip, it rolls on up to the point where the Bunker scene is just about to appear (you hear the weapons guy start to speak) then..........it locks up (programme not responding).

No matter what I've tried it just crashes there every time. I've been literally DAYS at this. It's not a lot of fun when you can't get the latest versions of your favourite Mods to run.

I'll try downloading and extracting every mod on the list again I guess because one of them (God knows which one) has to be corrupted. I suspect it's either OH 1.9 or TDWs 7.1 UI. But that's for tomorrow I think. I've had enough for one day

Don't you love it when up wake up at 4 in the morning because not being able to figure this out is driving you nuts? Right, here we go again. I'll install SH5 afresh and patch it to 1.2 Then I'll delete the Visual C because it certainly does install from the DVD. After that, a fresh load of downloads to make up the MEP and try again. Isn't it fun to have a plan for the day?!?!?!?!?

I appreciate greatly all your help here, Sober. You're a gentleman and a scholar, Sir!

I don't have that one, Trevally.

I have various "2008s" (versions 9.0.30729................4148, 5570 and 6161)

There's a 2010 version (x86 Redistributable - 10.0.30319) which is 11 MB in size compared to 2 - 5 KB for all the 2008 versions. Is it worthwhile deleting all the versions before this or not?

Looks like the problem was corrupted files. Which one or how many I haven't a clue because I simply extracted them all again and used the MEP which worked perfectly first time after the trouble yesterday. There was no hint of spurious saved games on this last re-install either, so that remains a mystery for now.

I can't thank Sober enough for all his help. Trevally, too, for his assistance.

But neither of you are getting off the hook QUITE yet..................

Am I right in thinking that to modify TDW's Options PY file I should deactivate New UIs 7.1, modify the file accordingly then activate again prior to running the game?

One last question (you must be thinking I'm a complete numbskull)............

The Debugging programme "Dbgview".............

What's the right way to run it? Do you just fire it up on the desktop and then start SH? I see it runs away merrily spitting out lines but what is it actually doing/telling me?

Sorry to be so anal retentive, I can't help it!!!

Another idea to help others with MEP memory errors or JSGME issues.

"The Validator comes up with a couple of errors (Data/Land/AsianVillage) so it might be OH that's corrupt. " - This is a sh5 validator issue. But I do not believe I've had a crash yet. Could be because I have not played Monsun Gruppe yet.

I plan on sending Trevally a file list of errors in a few days. I used the SH5 validator using Open Horizons, and used the SH5 validator using 1.2 patch stock only, no mods installed. Some file errors caused crashes (Total Germany campaign.cfg in northwestern approaches comes to mind).

(Crashes were not caused by different versions and years of Visual C++ that have been stated in other posts. I was chasing Visual C++ errors stated in my event viewer that was related to SH5.exe.)

I did not use the JSGME mod validator, but I solved different mep errors that had memory errors over the years using SH3, SH4 and SH5.

Separate idea that does not cause memory errors - First have you disabled all mods and then, make sure NO files are left in the "your drive:\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\!BACKUP folder". JSGME creates the !BACKUP and !INSTLOGS.

Have you opened up the mep file in the Wordpad editor or any text editor?

Here is an example of errors. Not necessarily these mods, Both cause memory errors in JSGME.
1)Accurate German Flags
RemoveLogoIntroTheDarkWraith
DBM Background Video
sobers green spinning thing SH5
RemoveLogoIntroTheDarkWraith

Get rid of any duplicate entry. This example,RemoveLogoIntroTheDarkWraith.

2)Accurate German Flags
RemoveLogoIntroTheDarkWraith

DBM Background Video

Even though I saved the mod after I modified sober's great mod list and my other mods to my liking; somehow a space was created in the modlist. I do not remember how I saved the mod or what editor I was using. Just make sure there is no blank entries anywhere. This example, get rid of the blank line between RemoveLogoIntroTheDarkWraith and DBM Background Video.
