I was wondering what this update was the other day. My game CTD'd then I'm looking at the screen below in Trevally's post. After reading the blog that Sober placed in his post I wondered, they make mention of Firefox, Chrome and one more I can't remember, but if we got this update, are we safe? Does this Update from Ubisoft have anything to do with this "threat"? Since I was playing offline, how did they update the launcher? So, I'm really not offline I guess....(I hope I don't sound too naive).
I haven't talked much of the DRM 'cause as long as it didn't mess with me or my game, and if I could reasonably shut it off or play off line, I didn't let it bother me that much, BUT, This is different! I don't like the thought of Ubisoft using this DRM to further their petty meddlings into my likes, dislikes and purchase habits, and then to stupidly leave the toilet seat up for any hack to mercilessly cut our PC's throats.

Has anyone been able to actually remove the plugin and still open the game?

Yes

Does this Update from Ubisoft have anything to do with this "threat"?

Yes it fixes the threat:up:

When you load your uplay - it will check to see if you are online.
If you are - it will check to see if there are any uplay updates and load you stats etc. Then let you play SH5

If you are not online - it will skip that part and then let you play SH5

The online rquirement is gone.
Like I said above - if you are online, the uplay will check for updates etc. We have no control over this.

You could block uplay with your firewall or never connect to internet again and you will stick to the same uplay and it will never update - you can still play SH5 offline if you do this.

I have checked this update and it works:up:

Hopefully yes

Does this Update from Ubisoft have anything to do with this "threat"?

So it seems according to the changelog posted by Trevally

Since I was playing offline, how did they update the launcher? So, I'm really not offline I guess....(I hope I don't sound too naive).

Not necessarily so. Many programs are looking for online updates once in a while. It doesn't mean that they require an internet connection for doing their normal stuff, or that they are DRM protected. Indeed, most of them allow you to disable autoupdates. It is not the case of U-play, but this is anoher matter...

Are you using google, facebook, safari, etc? For many of these programs/websites there's more than a suspected that they are keeping records of our online activities... Now days the big brother isn't anymore only a TV format :03:

Has anyone been able to actually remove the plugin and still open the game?

Yes I did, but I didn't remove the plugin. I just disabled it as described by 0rpheus in the other thread

Thanks Trev,
I don't like to sound paranoid but when I saw this I got a bit angry. Thanks for answering so fast, I can play tonight and not worry about this any more.
Cheers :D
