View Full Version : So the water looks kind of awful in this game, any mods to fix that?

Primarily, my complaint is that it is FAR too opaque when running the 'TMO' mod, or even with 'ISE'. It's just...I mean, it's too glossy...the boat, when just submerged (at periscope depth) is totally invisible.

While it's certainly appropriate that, in certain weather, this might be accurate. Or, too, parts of the ocean - up here in the Pacific Northwest, the ocean is definitely very opaque. But, then, it's not blue, either, but very, very, VERY grey.

I've never, in any of my travels, seen oceans so completely blue and totally opaque. The stock game seems to actually handle this better than the various mods, but...

...I gotta think somebody has tried to tackle this. Calm seas, at periscope depth, the sub should be rather clearly visible from directly above. And the surface of the sea should definitely not have that overly-saturated blue appearance. In another thread, someone had posted a screenshot that really showed this problem...

On the one hand it's only cosmetic. External views are unrealistic anyway.

On the other hand this is also strictly cosmetic. I did it for my SH4 u-boats but it works the same in the main game.

Also, using photographs is a little misleading because it depends on what time of year it is, the angle of the camera, and the time of day it is.

If anything, looking at the photograph, the water is too opaque in the game. And if the time of day in the game pic is the same time of day in the photograph, then maybe reduce the saturation of the color a little is all. It also depends too, on how old the picture is, and if it changed or faded before it was put online.

Compared this pic, it might not be bright enough.

Also, it is impossible to get all the possible variations compared to what nature does. There are times when the sun reflects so intensely off the water, it is blinding, and can give you a nasty headache, but I have yet to see it mimicked in the game.

Sure it could be tweaked here and there, but I think it is very close (to real thing); in SH4 engine limitation of course; it wont get much better than this, unless someone will port sh4 to CryEngine (SDK is free) :P

I think Ducimas has tweaked water several times, each time, some like it, some don't, if he goes grey, people say it's not blue enough, vice versa.:haha:
As stated water is effected by several values beyond color as are most the colors, basically lighting effects, cloud colors, amount of clouds, etc...

I accept TMO may be too blue for some, moreso at night for me, so like many I tweak values for my own use, but too much tweaking you have to adjust sensors, that can really take a lot of testing. Still, look online at ocean pictures under a blue sky, it's really blue.

You may want to try caustic mod, improved stock env., think he has one working for TMO...

It can be done, being bored I'm trying to take it on. Problem is you have to do it adjusting reflection, light and filter values and they effect other issues and no way to time certain values, basically the 24 hour clock is effected. However, you can tweak other factors for some balance. Course then if you get the look, then you have sensors to deal with. To me it should be bright in the morning, look in the sun at 8am, water should blind you...Be nice if we could get a different sunset look at morning, another at night, guess could take the 3rd env file and give it a different look other than they grey, so you would see it in rotation...

Yes I was always wondering if there was a way to make a little different color value for sunrise and sunset, as I am an oil painter, and I know it isn't much, but there is a difference to sunrise color values and sunset colors. Again, to the average person, they might not notice it, but I have watched and morning skies tend to be more crisp and brilliant, where sunsets tend to be more subdued, to the point where the orange in the sky can have a brown tone to it, where the sunrise is more so a bright cleaner look.

That's not to say that it is "always" like that, because weather conditions can and do affect both, as does time of year and air temps, wind, and humidity values all play into it.

The part about the sun being blinding at the times of mid morning and later afternoon would also be cool effects to have, and yes I bet they can be a time consuming venture to undertake.
