There have been a few threads requesting mods that cannot be accomplished in the SH5 engine. There's also been talk about a kickstarter project for some of the talented programmers to make a custom subsim. Let me just say I'm pretty good with computers but I'm not a programmer. I don't know how much work it would take to design a hardcore subsim from the ground up. But I think there would be a market for it and I would encourage some of talented modders / programmers to take a chance with it.

The guy who made XPlane has to have made 8 figures if not 9 figures over the 20 year life of the software (i.e. somewhere between $10 million and $1 billion) Not bad for 20 years work. Just like Microsoft tried to turn Flight Simulator into an arcade game, Ubi is doing the same thing with Silent Hunter. So I think there'd be a market for a hardcore subsim program if someone wants to take the risk and sacrifice their time to build it. It's not a guaranteed to make money (nothing is) but there's a market for it if it's good. I'd buy it.

If what you suggest was true, this (http://dangerdeep.sourceforge.net/)would've become a killer sim long time ago.

At least it wouldn't be a half finished and broken simulation like what UBI did with SH3 and 5. And yes, anyone doing this would have a huge market for a quality U-boat sub sim that includes everything from 39 to 45.... probably the Pacific theater too.

Actually it's mostly done now if all the excellent mods could be used with a gaming engine they come up with. And without the need for and internet connection.

Besiders, we have one hell of a great programer here now. And I imagine a few others too..... if they all have the time. ;)

The reason it didn't is because it was originally Linux only (which I love, but most don't) and was fundamentally broken.
