Having witnessed a few task force air attacks recently, Ive noticed while plenty of tracers and the sounds of AA exploding after fired, I never see the black puffs, from other ships guns or my own 40 MM.Thinking this is a graphics setting issue or a game issue? Anyone know? have a solution?

Neither the 20mm nor the 40mm has the shells that leaves the black puffs. The Pom-Pom does. My ships have this problem rectified.

My 40 bofars do, leave the puff and you can hear the explosions...TMO/RSRD, lot of other mods, but I've never done anything.

However, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't with a Gato....

Go to your SH4 directory, and open

Data / Library / USSubParts,

just mod the 40mm .sim file under AmmoStorage. It is under 6: wpn_Cannon, then just click on the sublink it opens.

Modded mine to carry AA ammo, but although it bursts in the air, it doesn't leave that thick puff of smoke in the air like you see in the old films, where the flak was thick enough to walk on.

As for the 20mm, I don't recall them having the exploding type AA ammo. I think they used regular types of ammo for the Oerlikon. I just wish we could slow the rate of fire on it, as it sounds more like a 50 cal, than the 20mm guns I've heard from that era.

The 40 MM in TMO is supposed to but it never shows in my game, even with the big warships and merchants firing away at masses of planes etc Ive seen SS that shows the black puffs as well as herd from armistead and others, just does not display in my game for some reason.40 has AA rounds and should show them in addition to the 3 inch and 5 inch guns that fire at planes. The 5 inch gun for pplayer subs is supposed to have an AA round, I may see about getting them back but not sure could get the crew to fire the deck gun at aircraft.

Already tried that. The deckgun crew won't fire at planes, so I do instead! You need them on deck though for quicker reload times, and just use the red crosshair on the screen. Don't mess with that manual elevation junk as planes are way too fast and easy to lose track of.

Hehe bubble, before long you'll be wanting to put the AA shotgun shells used by the Yamato's 18 inch guns. I wonder if the yamato ever used those to effect. Seems I read they shot the 18 inch guns into the water to try to flood low flying planes, but that AA round for the 18 inch could probably clear a 100 yard path for a couple miles.
